Hard Drive Advice--Willing to Blow $5,500 (Ouch) - 12 years agoI am about to start work on a 3-hour documentary-type video for teachers. I am looking at the Canon - XF300 and XF 305 camcorder but am open to other suggestions. There will be lots of green screen. I have a Mac Pro 8 Core, 2.25, with 16 gig RAM. I have Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP 7), FCP X and Adobe Master Collection 5.5. I don't know if the output will be to Blu Ray or download--maybe both. Project settings are not firm...probably HD 720 P but that is up in the air. DV, Quicktime, or MPEG4? I am guessing Quicktime with quality set high. It offers a number of compression options. However, when a work is being CRITICAL of another, that is one of the issues that is considered. Look at all the anti-Michael Moore films that use footage from his films ("Manufacturing Dissent", etc.). While it is true that Michael Moore's assistant knocked the filmmakers' camera to tby economicsprofessor - Café LA Re: Best method for importing Hi-Def tv recorded broadcasts FAIR USE - 14 years agoThank you for the responses. The camera has no component in, only component out. There has to be a way to do this. The Fair Use Thing: Jeff, I am aware of CNN Image source. While I mentioned CNN in my post, any imported footage would probably be of other networks and is critical of their coverage of something. The fair use doctrine is employed by the networks themselves constantly. If I have a news show (CNN etc.) recorded in high def, what is the best way to get it from the DVR to my MAC for use in FCP? With standard definition I simply plug an S-Video cable from the DVR directly to my Sony Z1 camera. I then send that to the MAC via firewire. The camera doesn't appear to offer this option to go hi def from the DVR to the caby economicsprofessor - Café LA Best method for recording Mac system audio? - 14 years agoWhat is the best method for recording "what you hear" coming through your speakers on the MAC. For pcs, there is Roxio media creator which works great. Roxio gives the option of most formats. I have been doing this and then moving the files over to the Mac for use in Final Cut. Clearly there is a faster way.by economicsprofessor - Café LA Want two versions of DVD--Blu-Ray and regular DVD - 14 years agoBlu-Ray discs have fallen dramatically in price. I am making a documentary and want to make two versions--regular widescreen and Blu Ray widescreen. I will be making the Blu Ray DVD version in Encore as DVD Studio Pro does not support Blu Ray. What is the most efficient way to do this in Final Cut Pro 6? I made it using keyframes in FCP 6. When I create a DVD (DVD Studio Pro) it plays great on a DVD player hooked up to a television, but if you try to watch the DVD on a computer (I tried 3), the video of the notes going by is a bit choppy. The audio is fine however. I don't want to dump the sequence, peoby economicsprofessor - Café LA Re: News story text in documentary - 15 years agoDerek: There is a good deal of music throughout the documentary. All is being used legally. I have NOT aquired the rights to any newspaper articles that I show. Like many, I am not sure where "Fair Use" ends and stealing starts when it comes to brief excerpts. I planned to do a final review before release regarding such issues. Performance was great until last night. A software update was downloaded from Apple and also a firmware update. I don't think any update was for Final Cut, although this is possible (I didn't look carefully). Afterwards performance is way down. Every clip in the timeline now has to be rendered in order to be played without dropped frames. Aby economicsprofessor - Café LA For outdoor shooting, can most sunlight problems be corrected in Final Cut Studio? - 16 years agoFor outdoor shooting, I have been told and noticed that when the sky is completely overcast it makes filming and dealing with lighting easier. The problem is waiting for such weather conditions to occur. Do the color correction properties of Final Cut Pro and Color make this a non-issue? I am making a documentary in Final Cut Studio 2 with Sony Z1 camera. It looks great in FCP. After I run it through compressor (it becomes 23 megabytes) and make a DVD there is very bad flicker/blurring during any movement by characters on the screen. The only parts of the screen where this happens is where the movement is taking place ---if a character is waving, ONLY their hand flickers/blurs. The agency that is copying the footage can send it to me in any format I like.
