Re: FCPX Files Management? - 12 years agoThanks for the tips. I'll look up the workflow. I'm sure I'm not the only one a bit frustrated that the workflow we're accustomed to from years of experience is no long applicable. I'm used to FCP projects linking to media...not creating their own media. Of course, part of this may be the kind of auto-transcoding the program is doing to bring in things like ACVHD files.by Dale Kutzera - Café LA - X FCPX Files Management? - 12 years agoWhat's the best way to set up FCPX files? I'm amazed that the program seems to automatically create copies of the footage into an event folder. This can take up many Gigs of space. Are people deleting original media once this process is completed? This happens even though I uncheck the box about copying files to the event folder. DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA - X Re: Newbie Question on Opening Project - 12 years agoThanks...I'll give them a shot.by Dale Kutzera - Café LA - X Newbie Question on Opening Project - 12 years agoSo I've just upgraded to Lion and trying the free trial of FCP X. I'm not surprised at all the uproar (get it..."Lion"...uproar?). Simple things like Saving and Opening are now complicated. First off, X saved the footage to the Event..so I found it had installed 160GB of footage on my internal drive. I copied this footage to the external drive (now I have two sets of footage on thaby Dale Kutzera - Café LA - X General Workflow Question - 14 years agoI have an hour-long vintage radio show to clean up. Is it best to do this in chunks? Or as one long audio file?by Dale Kutzera - Soundtrack Pro Re: Spent LaCie's - 15 years agoI've kept my useless burned out LaCie as a reminder never to buy another. DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: Mount Point? - 15 years agoYes, mea culpa. The good folks at Apple suspect the Parallels partition might be the culprit. That Parallels somehow things the main partition is a...what do you call it...remote drive or server? I have trashed all the stuff in that smaller partition, deleted that partition so now there is only one, but the big partition is still not mounting. It's not to the left of the finder window and inby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: Mount Point? - 15 years agoI think I have found a great work-around: use a different computer. The plugin is recognized just fine on my laptop. DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Mount Point? - 15 years agoHere's a quirk I need a cure for. My main drive was partitioned: a big one for apps and system; a smaller one for parallels and win apps. For some reason the big partition stopped mounting on the desktop. It's greyed out in disk utilities. Computer works fine, apps show up in the applications part of finder, but not on the left side. Not a problem until I downloaded a plugin and the appby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: Capturing from VHS - 15 years agoThat did the trick. Thanks so much. Dkby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Capturing from VHS - 15 years agoI'm using my camera to convert some vhs footage to dv an capture in FCP 6. It worked once fine, but now capture window is black and says "Waiting for timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when Device Control is enabled." Quite frustrating as the video is reaching the computer...I can see the first capture window, but when I press "now" I get nothing. Thoughts? DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: HDV to DVD - 15 years agoWhat the difference between exporting using compressor and exporting as a quicktime then dropping that file into compressor? Dkby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: HV20 Workflow - 15 years agoI can understand the duration of the clip being the same, but am puzzled as to why they seem identical frame to frame. I would imagine one or the other would have some duplicate frames. Does FCP remove the added frames of a 29.97 file automatically when put into a 23.98 sequence? DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: HV20 Workflow - 15 years agoThanks for the insight. I like it when things work, but strive to also understand why they work. One other mystery is that in this 23.98 sequence I can drop both 29.97 and 23.98 versions of the same clip and they seem to be the same length, with no repeat frames or interlacing. They are frame for frame the same. Shouldn't they be different? Dkby Dale Kutzera - Café LA HV20 Workflow - 15 years agoI found a nice workflow article on the apple website: I went through this process and am still not sure about the specifics of what is happening: I'm shooting in the HDV 24p Cinema mode. Then I capture in FCP 6 and the resulting clips in the browser window say they have a vid rate of 29.97 (odd since I thought they'd be 24). What I'm not sure about is if they are Raid drives or not. Have to investigate that more. I suppose with anything if you buy a big drive you better buy two...one to back up the first on. DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Animation Tips - 15 years agoFor a newbie to animation, are here any resources that show sample clips then detail how the clip was made? I've found a lot that goes through the whole program (Lynda.com etc) but not much that shows examples of what motion does and how. I'm trying to understand what program is used to handle a given type of job. DKby Dale Kutzera - Motion Raid Drive? - 15 years agoPardon this basic question but couldn't find an answer in my searches: Is a Raid drive better for video editing that a non Raid drive? I've used both. The only drive I've had trouble with is a Lacie Raid drive (two drives linked together in one housing.) Goes without saying that I'm after the biggest I can afford and a Firewire connection. BTW I can't believe that you can get a Terrabyte driby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: Canon hv20/30 workflow - 15 years agoThanks for the advice. I really appreciate it and will try out this workflow. I had wondered about how to go about deinterlacing and re-interlacing. DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Canon hv20/30 workflow - 15 years agoHi, I've searched the boards, but haven't found a workflow for this camera. I have a hv20 and just curious if the cinema 24 p mode should be used or the 60i mode. I'll be editing in FCP 6 and ultimately outputting to dvd, not film. So maybe the 24p cinema mode is not for me? DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Hiss Removal - 16 years agoI searched the site but haven't found a trick to remove hiss from archival footage. Any ideas? Is this a noise gate, or a high pass filter issue? DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: Video Format Resources? - 16 years agoIn Cinema Tools, the Reverse Telecine options box provides for: Capture Mode: Field 1 Only, Field 2 only, Field 1-Field 2, Field 2 - Field 1 Fields: Style 1 or 2, A1A2, B1B2, B3C1, C2D1, D2D3 (no R2D2 though) So far I've used trial and error with this feature, but I want to learn more. DK www.militaryintelligenceandyou.comby Dale Kutzera - Café LA A Big Thank You to LAFCPUG - 16 years agoJust a huge thanks to everyone involved in this site for all the help over the 3-year adventure of making my film, "Military Intelligence And You!" We had a nice festival run, played theatrically in 9 cities across the country, and are coming out on DVD. In the dense technical jungle of digital production, LAFCPUG was an invaluable resource. D.K. www.militaryintelligenceandyou.coby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Video Format Resources? - 16 years agoNow that my first film is done, I've decided to dedicate the rest of my life to understanding the arcane business of video formats. Here's what inspired this: --I pulled some footage (public domain) off a dvd. It was 29.97 --In FCP 6 on my Mac PPC G5 this played with those added frames. I can't find a way to copy all this stuff to my stalwart PPC G5. Tried migration, or burning a cloned drive via Super Duper and no dice...the G5 doesn't even mount the drive. Is this a Intel vs PPC conflict? Is the only alternative to just re-install the software onto the G5 program by program? Thanks for any aby Dale Kutzera - Café LA Re: PAL Version - 16 years agoI need a Pal tape for a theatrical screening...I think from Digibeta but perhaps from BetaSP. From that tutorial you referenced, it seems that conversion through Compressor II would take days to do on my computer. So I'm probably looking at a dub house. Thanks for the help. DKby Dale Kutzera - Café LA PAL Version - 16 years agoWhat's the best way to create a PAL version of a film? I have output the film to Digibeta as an NTSC. I suppose I could just have this tape dubbed and converted to PAL. Is is possible to use quicktime conversion to create a PAL quicktime file, then export that to digibeta?
