Re: "Media not optimized" warning - 11 years ago> anyway, you have successfully ignored it without dire consequences? Yes, but I wouldn't get overly comfortable...Final Cut, you know. Just because it can handle some messes doesn't mean it should. What happens if you do a simple resave on a clip using QuickTime Player?by derekmok - Café LA Re: "Media not optimized" warning - 11 years agoYeah, that warning is so vague that I tend to ignore it as well. I'm guessing your FCP just doesn't like the software that created the clips, but not enough to cause problems (at least for now). There are too many things it could be. Did you already check all parameters in QuickTime Player and FCP clip properties?by derekmok - Café LA Re: 23.98 in 29.97 needs reverse telecine for editing. - 11 years agoJust use QuickTime Player Pro. How old is your Mac? Modern Macs with OS10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and above should be able to read FAT16-, FAT32- and NTFS-format drives. I remember an Intel Quad being unable to read an NTFS drive about two years ago, but that seems to be in the past. Next time, test it before you put the P2 files onto the drive. When a drive is mis-formatted, the only solby derekmok - Café LA - X Re: Edit in Apple Intermediate Code (AIC) or Apple Pro Res 422 HQ? - 11 years agoProRes is far superior. Also, if you're at picture lock and an EDL/XML isn't important, you can try exporting a self-contained movie file of the edit. Then re-import that into a Sequence and target only the glitched clips for replacement. That way at least you don't have to redo the eby derekmok - Café LA Re: losing tails of a shot, or whole shot, or slipping sync, while outputting to QT - 11 years ago> Field dominance is set to None all the way through. Is that ok? Don't know. You didn't tell me anything specific about your media. If you didn't conform all of it to your timeline codec and frame rate, and you're using FCP7, then you can have dropouts, corruptions and field issues all over the place. You can't just drop a smorgasbord of mixed media onto an FCP7 timeline.by derekmok - Café LA Re: losing tails of a shot, or whole shot, or slipping sync, while outputting to QT - 11 years agoDid you convert the clips properly before editing? While ppi is irrelevant to video work (since you're not printing anything), images at a high ppi are very taxing to an FCP project, and CMYK images can make a render fail outright. When you change the ppi, remember to readjust the height and width of the image in pixels to what it's supposed to be. Remember toby derekmok - Café LA Re: FCP 7: Error - Out of Memory occurring too frequently! - 11 years agoDid you import any stills or graphics? Overlarge graphics files would make FCP go bonkers. So can non-self-contained (reference) movie files, non-optimized media (eg. I've had one die, but that's it. Like Andrew said, when the newbies mistreat their equipment, it really doesn't give a clear picture on exactly how well these things function. I have two or three Rugged drives, all at least four years old, that still work just fine.by derekmok - Café LA Re: FCP X lagging What kind of graphics card? - 11 years agoEven more likely is that you're not using a fast enough drive for whatever media you're trying to edit. Macs do not need that software to communicate with external drives. When drives are suddenly cut off from a Mac, the most vulnerable part is the directory. Run DiskWarrior. Always. The internal hard drive is where the software and OS dwell. Video editing is one of the most taxing tasks a computer can attempt. Whenever you have a choice, it's always better to use another drive.by derekmok - Café LA - X Re: G-Drive issues....BACK UP this holiday season. - 11 years agoYou can't really expect to never move a drive. And in about seven years of using them, I've only had one G-Drive die. That's certainly a better track record than what I've seen with the Lacies, Western Digitals or Maxtors that my clients sometimes buy just to save cash. Any drive can die. You just have to have very good work habits and take care of them as well as you can.by derekmok - Café LA Re: Opinions on this OS, please - 11 years agoThe longer you wait, the less likely you'll be able to find a copy of FCP7. If you think you might still want to use it, get it now. (In fact, the time to buy it should have been over a year ago when FCP7's discontinuation was first announced) Investing in FCP7 now, just know that it will be a bad investment, because you can't upgrade it, and Apple's hardware will stop being able to run it, soby derekmok - Café LA Re: G-Drive issues....BACK UP this holiday season. - 11 years ago> I was on a windows PC when it froze and I had to do a hard reset, at the time I had my g-drive connected via e-sata. Using a drive on both PC and Mac on a regular basis is a bad idea. As strypes said, I'd try DiskWarrior, but it's a Hail Mary pass. That said, before you say "My drive won't mount", know that DiskWarrior can sometimes see drives that OS can't. Launch DiskWaby derekmok - Café LA Re: Opinions on this OS, please - 11 years agoIt's going to be very tricky at this point, since you can't buy FCP7 through official channels anymore. If you had FCP7 on a compatible Mac, you can take an FCP5 project file and update it to FCP7 simply by opening it. But it's an extremely bad idea to try to bounce back and forth between old and new versions. Just choose one and stick with it. Merged clips are such a pain in the ass. So unpredictable and erratic in their behaviour. I don't think the designers of FCP ever figured that it would be handling this many audio sources.
