Re: Don't use Safe Boot when installing FCS 3 - 13 years agoYeah, that "...of course..." part really stopped me dead in my tracks when I read that. I just installed the upgrade last night and had no problems apart from keeping me up until 2 a.m. as I kept shuffling discs in and out <yawn>.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Snow Leopard Spells TROUBLE for SxS Users with Express 34 - 13 years agoThis is such bulls**t. It's not like they didn't know this was coming! How would they explain away the fact that there are smaller companies who were right there day and date with the release of the OS? It also isn't like they are some tiny company who doesn't have the resources to commit to an update such as this. I could also give them some "wiggle room" if they said that the releaseby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Snow Leopard Spells TROUBLE for SxS Users with Express 34 - 13 years agoSame Kernal Panic here with my 17" MBP (2.33 C2Duo). I was able to read the SxS on my desktop with the Sony SxS card reader but that doesn't help me with the shoots I have coming up next week. Sucks to be on the "bleeding edge", huh? Oops, forgot to add, this is using FCS, not the latest FCS2 or FCS3 or whatever the heck we are calling it.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: 1.5TB seagate barracuda SATAII's - 13 years agoWhat exactly makes an "enterprise level" HD an enterprise level HD?by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: FCP Stutters to a complete stop - 13 years agoI've also been experiencing this same thing in the last few days but with a VERY basic SD video clip I was working on. Even after rendering the very few things I had applied to the clip (3-way color correction, slight raising of audio level) the dumb thing would start to stutter and pause. I have 16 gigs of RAM and I believe I have at least 200 or 300 gigs of free space on this drive. Any suggestby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: WWDC - NO FCS 3 - WTF? - 13 years agoI'll bet Matrox must have groaned <Hey! So did I!!> when these new Macs starting rolling out without an ExpressCard slot in them. My new MXO2 will stay married to my present 17" MBPro for quite a while I guess but I would have liked to move to a smaller form-factor laptop. SD card slot? What were they thinking?by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Batch Export problems - 13 years agoYou're right Andy, that was the best way to handle it. As soon as I did a couple test saves in .avi, the files displayed correctly in 16:9. I only wish QTPlayer could get it right with .mov files, but at least my PC-lovin' client can see the files natively.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Batch Export problems - 13 years agoThanks Andy. So this is a QTPlayer bug and NOT something I'm doing wrong! Good. I wasted a LOT of time trying to pin this down. Let me add another wrinkle to this workflow. The client I'm delivering all these 16:9 clips to is on a PC. His editing software WILL open .mov files but I'm not sure yet if it will "see" the flag, either. Would I have a better chance of this working for him ifby Dave Morrison - Café LA Batch Export problems - 13 years agoI'm having an odd problem exporting a folder of .mov files and I can't figure what I'm doing wrong. Here are the steps I'm going through followed by the problem: 1. Import a folder of .mov files into FCP (files=1920x1080/30p shot from Sony EX1) 2. Select all of the .mov files in this folder 3. Select Batch Export with settings requested by client (they want widescreen so I chose Anamorphic,by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: filter for fluorescents? - 13 years agoI think it's more toward 30CC of magenta depending on whether they are cool white or warm white.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: TimeCode Generator Question - 13 years agoAndy, the link doesn't appear to work.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Nothing about the Supermeet? - 13 years agoDang, and I was hoping that the announcement was going to be something a little bit "bigger". You know....like the famous "Bag of Hurt" might finally be turning into something more manageable like a "Pouch of Prickly Heat" or a "Baggie of Blisters" or a "Coinpurse of Carbuncles". <sigh>by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Nothing about the Supermeet? - 13 years agoHey Michael et al, I thought we were supposed to be hearing some major announcement about BluRay at the Supermeet and/or NAB. What was announced?by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Plasma Screens on Evening News - 13 years ago<slappingforehead> Duh! You're so right. I guess I should read these twice before posting, huh? ;-) I'll be anxious to see the pix too. At first, I thought that maybe it was a simple depth of field problem but who knows. </lurk>by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Plasma Screens on Evening News - 13 years agoCould there be any issues with mismatched frame rates?by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Need a clever solution to this problem - 14 years agoAlso, would getting a better quality projector be in the budget? It just seems that you're going to put a lot of time and effort in making the video's black look "crappy" just to overcome the bad projector.....just thinking out loud.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Media Manager "Recompress" setting question - 14 years agoI was just watching a very good video podcast about the proper way to use "Media Mangler"....er, "Manager". daveby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Recommendations for Mic Preamp - 14 years agoI have a great little Sound Devices MP-2 up on eBay right now, but since the budget is tight AND you need the computer interface as well, I think the USBPre is a great suggestion. You can't go wrong with ANY SD device.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: e-Sata External hard drives and MacBook Pro - 14 years agoI know you were saying that you were "shopping among the cheapest" and this might illustrate the false economy of doing that. I'm not saying that buying the higher priced drives will always be better (read: LaCie and others), but you will eat up some of your "savings" by having to send/return these drives from whence they came.by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: e-Sata External hard drives and MacBook Pro - 14 years agoWow, and I thought I was leaving this BS behind when I switched from PC to Mac! It might help if we can determine: a. what brand of HD's are inside all these enclosures b. what bridge chipset is being used between the HD and the ports on the back It used to be that Oxford was considered the best or most compatible chipset used in a variety of enclosures. READ HERE! - 14 years agoI flashed the firmware on 3 of the 500gig drives Tuesday and it went smoothly for all three. However, erring on the side of caution, I popped out all of the other drives on my Mac Pro, used the drive sled from one of those to mount each of the three drives individually, and swapped each of the drives in and out of the MP one at a time to do the updates. Booted from the .iso firmware disk. Major Pby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Display for Working with HD - 14 years agoThis question is very timely for me and one of my buddies. We're now seeing several monitors (Samsung, in particular) that have HDTV tuners built into them along with the usual computer inputs. This begs the question of which kind of monitor is best for checking your color, gamma, etc. if you are simply trying to produce an "accurate" final product. If I could afford one of the frightfuby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Oh, no.. not Seagate drives!! - 14 years agoYou're so right, Michael. I haven't owned a brand yet that didn't fail eventually. Unfortunately, they've become such a commodity item over the last few years that I'm afraid QC has gone out the window. I'd be willing to pay a bit more to get an "enterprise level" drive if I knew that its' MTBF was measurably higher. daveby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Oh, no.. not Seagate drives!! - 14 years agoI just got the first DOA Seagate drive I've ever bought. It was a 500 gig (ST3500641AS-RK) and this news is NOT making me very comfortable. I bought the same exact drive about 3 weeks ago and it initialized and performed perfectly (so far) as has the replacement drive but I'm going to keep my eye on both of them. I'm dumping footage onto them for offline storage until I can afford to get a Droboby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: Advice on purchasing New or Old MacBook Pro 15"?? - 14 years agoHi Robert. What I was saying was that there is already an anti-reflective coating on the glossy screen to knock down the reflections. Believe me, it WOULD look bad if they had not added this. However, many people still won't like it and I can't say that I blame them. My previous MacBook Pro and Powerbook were all matte finish screens. Of course, that's no reflection on the talents here. <sorry, couldn't resist> I'm typing this on 17" of glossy goodness and it's not a problem. Granted, I wouldn't want to try to work on this thing outside or in a room with lights everywhere, but if you can limit the lighting behind the area where you are using the laptop, it'sby Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: mouse freeze with 10.5.6 - 14 years agoAdding to my own answer: Downloaded and installed 10.5.6 update again and it DID allow me to install it on top of itself. Then downloaded and installed the latest version of the Kona 3 driver/software package (6.0.2 released on 12/11). After doing a restart, I then tried putting the MacPro to sleep again.....same outcome.....hung mouse pointer. Does anybody from Aja ever post in these forums?by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: mouse freeze with 10.5.6 - 14 years agoI wonder if the fix for this will be coming from Aja or from Apple?by Dave Morrison - Café LA Re: mouse freeze with 10.5.6 - 14 years agoOddly enough, I suggested this to the tech but she didn't think that the updater would allow me to reinstall the package on top of the other installation. I haven't tried it yet but probably will. I'll keep you posted.by Dave Morrison - Café LA |
