Re: To Linear or Not to linear that is the question - 18 years agodifinitley agree. there is still a certain amount of time neexded to GET to the specific point in a reel of film. you cant just jump there. but 30 pieces of film haging in a trim bin, waiting to be assembled in ANY order that;'s non-linear. and as everyone points out, so is the abiltiy to extract, insert, re-arange in way you like. the big thing that delineates TAPE editing for me is the duratby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years ago"Since none of us were there, and Hitchcock's not around anymore, there's really no way to know" well i know what a step-printed shot looks like! and with video/dvd we can actualy examine these things a lot more. i think he would be compelled to fib about that shot, as a post-prod trick like that could indicate that he didnt get it right on the day, which just doesnt fit in with the hby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: Edit to tape pickup issues... - 18 years ago*sigh* why is it that we sudenly see all the mistakes in a piece when we start putting it down on tape? :-) it's like until then our critical faculties are elsewehre. actualy i guess it;s because we're doing our own on-lines, and there's only so much you can concentrate on. i also suspect that the NON LINEAR aspect catches us up. it's too easy to bounce around, or concentrate on specific types oby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: Order to learn programs - 18 years agoi suspect that spotto might be toeing the same party line, and believing hitchcok's own self mythologising. sorry i cant remember much about where i get my info. there was one book about hitchcock and selznick, which i think looked at the DPR's (Daily Production Reports) from his Selznick films. i also have a vague recolection of an interview with an editor, but i could be wrong. i;m also goingby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: Locating used vs. unused media - 18 years ago"determine how much of the media is being used in at least one sequence" select the sequnce and open the Media Manager. un-check the "Delete unused media" and you will see how much space all the master clips used in that sequnce are taking up. A lot of his movies were his stories, he just had someone else do the writing a lot of the time. A lot of them he also actually wrote himself. Of course he directed them all. (just like you cant adjust the levels when captureing over FW) even if you only ask for one chanel, i *think* you will get both in the actual file, but only one displays in FCP. if you bring in the master file manualy, or do a match-back-to-source-file (option apple f) i think you will get access to both chanels. the only exception is moby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: thinking out loud 'feature request' - 18 years agoas for in outs in the timeline.. it's less about adding media to the timeline, and more about making extractions. after all.. that's when you;re going to hit "Delete" :-) nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: 2 small ?'s - 18 years agobeats me... when was the last time you trashed your prefs? :-) nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: thinking out loud 'feature request' - 18 years agoi think i like that "selection takes precedence" is the rule. when they changed that in FCP4.5 with blading, i was very confused! it's back now, so thanks Apple, and FCP team. it's just as easy to forget that you;ve got in/pionts marked when you go to delete a selection. although actualy, i do think that;s less likely a scenario than leaving someting selected, and marking new in/outsby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: ** Film Look with HDV *** - 18 years agoLuca, i dont know enough about HDV to help with that. but i can tell you that that is not the "easy" way! here is one filter that does what that 2001 article describes: Too Much To Soon "Blend Fields" using this will save you a lot of time! if you get some $$ to spend (you wont need many!), check out Graeme Nattresses "Film Effects" nickby Nick Meyers - Café LA Re: Viewing two different formats with no problems - 18 years agosorry, Yan, what are the 2 formats? i suspect you;ve got DVCAM and miniDV. these should play together without problems. both would have been captured as DV, either PAL, or NTSC, so there must be somethng else going on? we will need some more info to help properly.
