Re: disk speed requirements for editing DVCPRO HD in FCP - 17 years agothanks, Andrew, for that note. UC 10bit SD work is so rarely called for in my environment, that I think we'll be OK with a 2 drive striped array. we do very little editing in 10 bit. It's been useful for us recently in digitizing and archiving some old BetaSP masters.by clay - Café LA Re: disk speed requirements for editing DVCPRO HD in FCP - 17 years agook. good to hear, wayne. Since the existing array is almost full, I'm going to suggest we go with adding 2 additional disks and striping them. We'll need the extra space anyway, and striping them will give us the necessary speed for working with uncompressed SD and the DVCPROHD. thanksby clay - Café LA Re: disk speed requirements for editing DVCPRO HD in FCP - 17 years agothanks...so would you guys go with setting up a new 2 drive striped array, or would I be better off starting from scratch with 4 drives and striping all 4 together for best performance? I realize that by using 4 drives in an array, I'm lowering the MTBF for the array and increase the risk of failure, but would the speed be worth it? thanks!by clay - Café LA disk speed requirements for editing DVCPRO HD in FCP - 17 years agoWe're looking at moving to a DVCPRO HD based camera (the HVX200) and taking a look at all the other implications that such a move would have on our workflow. Drive space and speed are two things that we're trying to sort out. What is needed in terms of speed? Would an external eSATA RAID be able to handle this type of footage? Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there's any way to separate the two processes (at least that I can tell). any other ideas? thanksby clay - Café LA Re: issue using Compressor to encode flv and upload via ftp - 17 years agoHere's my workflow: 1. Edit in FCP 5.1.1 2. Export a Full-res quicktime (self-contained) (normally an ntscDV file, sometimes uncompressed 8bit). 3. So I got compressor to work using the QuickTime Export Components to set up a preset that encodes my flv files the way they need to be encoded, then I setup a new Destination, so that the files will get uploaded via ftp to the server. I only have Soundtrack, which came with FCP 4.5. I believe Soundtrack PRO comes with FCP production studio, which I do not have. If there is an update to 1.3 that I could use, would you point me in the right direction, cause I can't find it! Thanks, Clayby clay - Soundtrack Pro ST 1.2 - Why is it adding silence at the end of a track? - 18 years agoI'm working on a very simple audio project. I'm working with some audio that I initially recorded with my camcorder, brought into FCP to chop up and do some basic tweaks, then I've exported an AIFF from FCP and brought it into Soundtrack to add some finishing touches (reverb, etc). It's working fine, all except for one thing. I haven't heard that before, but will give it a try. The de-interlacing suggestion is a good one, but for a menu, I don't really have any options as to how that encodes, do I? At least, I've never been aware of such an option. That doesn't mean nothing exists, though...by clay - DVD Studio Pro Re: Studio Pro 4 - 18 years agoARe you positive that you're working from the same footage that you had in FCP? I find that it's pretty easy to get stuff mixed up especially if I've encoded and re-encoded stuff. Make 100% sure (even if you are already) that you've got the correct assets imported to DVD SP. If you have the correct stuff there, then your DVD will be fine. I'd guess that you simply forgot to change out some viby clay - DVD Studio Pro Re: Best way to down convert from HDV - 18 years agohave you tried using one of apple's 16:9 DVD presets in Compressor? That should take a quicktime of your HDV program and downconvert it to SD but keep the aspect ratio so you can burn a DVD that is still 16:9 but that will play on any standard DVD player. good luck.by clay - DVD Studio Pro round graphics in PSD file used as menu background - 18 years agoI'm having some problems with a circular logo that I'm using on a PSD that's the background for a menu in DVD SP 4.0.3. The edges of the logo are very jaggy and look pretty bad. In the Photoshop, I started with getting the logo from an illustrator file and pasting it into a blank PSD document at a Smart Object. Came in this morning, switched on the monitor, and all appears to be back to normal. What luck! I think one reason I didn't think about the magnetism issue was that the speakers I use at home on my computer are shielded, and I have one directly to the side of my CRT. Of course there are no issues with that, so I didn't think twice about the speaker being on top of the monitor here at woby clay - Café LA put a speaker on top of my ntsc monitor--anyway to degauss? - 18 years agoOK, so I think I have a problem here. A couple of days ago, I set one of our monitor speakers on top of our sony ntsc CRT monitor (a PVM-1341 model). I know all about speakers containing powerful magnets, and issues that crop up with various electronic devices if you place magnets near them. I assumed the speaker was shielded, and didn't notice any interference on the screen. Apparently when the keyframe button (the one at the bottom left of the viewer window) is pressed in audio mode, it adds a keyframe to both the level and pan trakcs. To just change the level or pan track separately, one needs to use the appropriate keyframe button which appears to the right of each track (quite logical, actually).by clay - Café LA Re: panning audio in FCP -- how to disable when all I want to change are levels? - 18 years agoI realized what I was doing wrong. I was using the keyframe button at the bottom of the viewer window, and not the one that sits to the right of the "level" indicator at the top of the viewer menu when in audio mode. sheesh.by clay - Café LA panning audio in FCP -- how to disable when all I want to change are levels? - 18 years agoWhenever I'm editing some audio in FCP 5 (but I've noticed this in previous versions), I find that when I have the clip open in the viewer window, and I'm adding keyframes to change the levels, a keyframe is added to the panning control, and so I get all sorts of wierd panning effects that I don't really want, all because I clicked the keyframe button in the window to get a levels keyframe.
