Also Josh Mellicker of DVCreators will show us their latest software encoder, dvcCast. Andreas Wacker, who developed the digital workflow for David Fincher's "Zodiac" returns to lafcpug to talk about how to "Encode for the Web" including choosing the right codec and container etc. Compressor Guru Brian Gary and Ray Wallick of Omni Cinema Craft will debut the brand new Cinema Craft Encoder MP Plug-In for Compressor 3. Plus, Stump The Gurus, Show and Tells and of course, World Famous Raffle.

Agenda

6:45- 7:15PM - Stump the Gurus
Join FCP Gurus Andrew Balis, Brian Gary, Kevin Monahan and Larry Jordan as they will attempt to answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems concerning FCS. If they can't solve your problem or answer your How 2, then you go home with a problem but you still got out of the house, so that's not a bad thing.

7:20PM - 7:35PM - Encoding For the Web - Andreas Wacker
Andreas Wacker, who developed the digital workflow for David Fincher's "Zodiac" returns to lafcpug to talk about ways to Encode for the Web including what codecs to use, what size to pick, what people are using these days, and how much bandwidth you have to watch.

7:40PM - 8:00PM - dvcCast - Josh Mellicker
dvcCast! imports your exported movies, captured digital pictures, graphics, and audio files, resizes and encodes them in "spectacular" quality, then uploads web-ready media to your FTP server, then even writes you the tags to embed your work in a web page, blog or forum. Josh Mellicker of dvCreators.net, shows us how.

8:05PM - 8:30PM - Telestream Pipeline SDI Network Encoder - Bill Harris
Real-time encoding from SDI to DV25, IMX 30/40/50 in a single box
Sits on your network so anyone can access it
Smart encoding to Final Cut Pro project bin settings
External encoding allows fast ingest without burdening your edit workstation
And so much more

8:30PM - 8:55PM - Break
GMAX will be there showing off their storage solutions. Lots of other stuff will be showing off too. The break is a chance to hang out and meet and greet and get your problems solved. Lots of FCP Gurus come to lafcpug meetings and this is your chance to network and make contacts and get your problems solved. Snacks and Beer and Wine will be on sale in the lobby. Proceeds go to the Gallery Theater.

9:00PM - 9:30PM - Cinema Craft Encoder MP Plug-In for Compressor 3 - Brian Gary and Ray Wallick
The Cinema Craft line of encoders set the bar within the entertainment industry for Standard Definition DVD, MPEG-2 compression and then once again with AVC/H.264 High Definition encoding for Blu-ray discs. Their résumé of SD titles is quite impressive: The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Spiderman 3, King Kong, Pirates of the Caribbean, the list goes on.
The release of Cinema Craft Encoder MP changes all that. For the first time the Cinema Craft Xtream software encoding engine is available outside of its proprietary, online system as a Compressor 3 plug-in.

9:35PM - 9:45PM - "Does Anyone Care"- Tom Mitchell- Show and Tell
"Does anyone care?" is a musical call-to-action video aimed at a christian youth group. It was also used to amass nearly $50,000 in donated materials and labor to benefit Mexican refugees near Tiajuana.  TRT: 4:55

There is a short lead-in story, but in essence the video is a music video montage that I created to inspire to the youth group of St. Mel's Catholic Church in Norco to action in support of  Mexican refugees in the Tiajuana area who were displaced by the bandits/rebels in central Mexico.

I characterize it as "Katrina without a hurricane" because the families were forced from their land by armed forces in Mexico's ongoing internal struggles. They fled with little but the clothes on their backs.

It could also be characterized as a "zero budget, unscripted testimony to a little known tragedy."  It was shot by my wife Margaret (no, not that Margaret Mitchell...) and I for the cost of a couple of reels of tape and a battery charge, and posted by me in FCP5 and Digital Film Lab 2. Bring Kleenex... (Between you and me, the piece was a divine inspiration in the aftermath of a pretty plain impromptu documentary requested by the priest at St. Mel's to validate the aid project.)
