16:9 in 4:3 sequence

I am still confused re: how to work with the 2 aspect ratios in one sequence. I have an equal amount of both 16:9 and 4:3 footage in a 4:3 timeline. The 16:9 footage looks stretched, ---is there any way to avoid this? Is it better to put 4:3 footage in a 16:9 timeline?

Suggestions?

The answer is that you cant mix aspect ratios in a single timeline as one will always look incorrect. You will have to resize one or the other. What is the requirement for the aspect ratio of your final master ?

There is a video tutorial for this at www.proapptips.com/captmench:

you can always cheat and put the 16:9 in a 4:3 and then put black bars on the 4:3 to match.
or 4:3 in a 16:9 timeline but you will have to blow up the 4:3 about 33% and loose the top and bottom.
no other way of matching it really

If I put the 16:9 in a 4:3, how do I put black bars on the 4:3 to match?

best way with the least rendering time is to simply crop them
Go to motion, crop

Don't use crop. If you need to move the image up and down, or use a different letterbox size, it's a pain in the ass to change anything. Make the black letterbox bars in Photoshop or use a combination of a black colour matte and a Mask Shape in FCP. Or, nest the sequence after editing and crop that or apply a Widescreen Matte filter. This topic has been covered many times in the forum.

i recently mixed some old dv stuff and some hdv stuff in a 4:3 dv timeline but first i took all the 4:3 and applied the widescreen filter..it turned out nicely but i hate mixing the 2 because in my opinion all my hdv stuff looks much better even downconverted when compared to my dv stuff

-True but rendering times go up by more than 50%.
i guess it all comes down to how much you need to move the footage in order to make it work cropped

where so I find the widescreen matter filter? Should this be added at the very end to avoid allot of rendering while editing?

The widescreen filter doesn't need to be rendered. It's in the "effects" tab in your browser, under "video generators".

It's a filter, not a Generator. And it does require rendering -- there's real-time playback depending on your FCP version, but not at optimal quality. So eventually you'll have to render it.
