i saved a clients project in 5.1 assuming they would be able to work with it elsewhere....now they say that no one is using 5.1 yet...how hard is for people to upgrade now from say 5.0.4?

Its easy. Well, if you call sending your disks to Apple in exchange for 5.1 easy. Many people are usig 5.1 All it is is a version that runs both on Intel Macs and non Intel Macs.

so to upgrade you have to send in your disks?
so this client has an edit tomorrow and her new editor doesnt' have 5.1...they can't just download an upgrade?
can i resave the projects as 5.0 versions?

You got to send in your disks. No reason to get 5.1 unless you have an intel Mac so just stay with 5.0.4 and no it is not backwards compatible.

if you need to get it to them just save it out as an xml

export your project as XML, version 1.

then they'll be able to open that as an FCP project in anything from FCP 4 up

read up on it here:

Why version 1? What about ver 2? Is it because 1 is the lowest common format? Any advantge to 2?

thanks,
tom

cant answer that in any depth.

but v1 works (imports in to FCP), v2 doesn't.

I don't think 5.1 is very common yet. The vast majority of people are running FCS on PPC, and there aren't that many improvements to justify the whole pain and risk of sending the disks in, yet. I'm sure when there's like a 5.2 available it will start becoming more common. Or if Intel ProMacs are introduced earlier than expected.
