"Silent Movie" text & decorationsPosted by Nick Meyers
hi, all.
i'm cutting a silent movie! we want to have old fashioned text cards, complete with the decorative scrolly bits on the corners of the frame, or along the sides. hope you know what i'm talking about there, because that's what i;m after. anywhere i might be able to purchase some of those or something i can use for them? oh, and ifanyone has some ideas about fonts, i;d love to hear them. i'll be going thru heaps of fonts, but if you've come across something in your travels that you think looks appropriate, i'd love to hear about it. thanks, nick
I did an "alternate cut" of a film a few months ago that was based on classical silent film. I didn't have the florid borders since it was only an experiment, but I did come up with a font combination I liked:
It was a combination of Gothic32Normal (for the first letter) and Baskerville for the rest, with Tracking spread out a bit and a little Gaussian Blur. www.derekmok.com
thanks, everyone.
good point, Joe. Mike, i like that Silentia. and this looks god too: [www.myfonts.com] you notice that that font's name is Byington. begins with a B... didnt get much further than that before i had to have a little lie down. better put on my hiking boots, there's a lot of terrain out there (when FCP changed it's default font from Geneva to Lucida, so did i....) istockphoto.com... and thus a whole new world is opened thanks again, nick
Some good ideas above. I would look for "hot metal type fonts" or "Art Nouveau" fonts. Richard Beatty has done some really nice reproductions of French decorative typefaces from the 1920's or thereabouts, like "Childs" and "Recherche" the idea of adding a slight amount of grey into white type against a black background is a good idea. You might want to add a bit of gaussian blur to the type to give it a distressed look. The beatty fonts will cost you money. Might find some freeware ornament fonts for the edges of your screen on some websites. Try looking here.
