I got an old Apple Cinema Display (Plastic one DVI ) and want to turn it into a TV. I've googled until my fingers have bled and cant get my head around what box I need. So...what box do I need that will work with an Apple Cinema Display?

I do not want a device that requires a computer. Recording TV is not a requirement. Just want a box that will turn my ACD or any computer monitor into a TV.

Hi Mike,

Have you considered using an old VHS vcr's
tuner & Apple's DVI to Video Adapter?

Uh no, but this looks cool. Thing is, without studying this too much does it require a computer? How does it work? Does the display hook up to the VCR using the DVI to Video Adapter? The VCR hooks up to the Cable connection?

No the VCR tuner is a TV minus display device. Just plug the the S video or RCA composite signal into the adapter turn the tuner in VCR to the channel you want to view & you should be all set.

All the best.

You'll also have to patch the audio rca's into an audio amp & there may be cheaper or better adaptors than the one that Apple makes.

I don't have a VCR in front of me but cant I just plug speakers into them or am I required to do something else? These all in one adapters I've been looking at are either way overkill or require computers.

VCR's usually connect to a TV which has an amp built in. Feed the line outs to whatever sound system the speakers are are plugged into or go to the Salvation Army & pick up an old HI ?i set for 10 bucks.

You could try one of these, but you still need an audio amp.

I stand corrected , you can plug a set of computer speakers into that unit, but the output is VGA & you may not have that port free on your Cinema display.

This is how I do it, but it does require a computer in the middle. I find the TiVo features very handy.

All that, and McDonald's coffee?

McDonalds gives you far better cups than Starbux. I've been putting my home brewed Starbux in that cup for almost a week now.
