Endlessly Crashing - Neede Professional HelpPosted by wgazecki
I have done everything I know is humanly possible, but FCP continues to incessantly crash. I'm a professional video editor and have been building and maintaining my own systems since 1991. FCP is crashing under many mundane circumstances, from opening bins to placing clips on the timeline. Rendering is fine. QT outputting is fine.
I've been editing in FCP for 5 years or so. Until recently I worked on a Dual 2.5GHz PPC for several years, and never had a problem I couldn't rectify. Now I'm on a 3.0GHz octocore intel, and I can't get FCP to work right. Everything else in the computer works perfectly- Photoshop, Toast, iTunes, Safari, Word, etc., etc. Large files transfer flawlessly and networking functions perfectly. There are no interface problems apparent, and all peripherals function in every regard. I am using the latest updates of everything. I have rebuilt the system (clean install of everything) from scratch twice. I have repaired permissions until the cows have actually come home (I have one sitting right here beside me ;-) I don't see any indication of anything at any level that could be contributing to this. I have Disc Warriored and Cache Cleaned and Hardware Tested ad infinitum. And yet, Final Cut keeps crashing and crashing. I am working in AIC, transcoded from HDV via Media Manager. I've been successfully working exclusively in this codec for several years with no problems (until the Intel). I have a lot of plug-ins installed, but haven't noticed any problems with using them or rendering, outputting, etc. I'm ready to pay someone to consult on this. I've run out of options. If anyone out there is in the Los Angeles area, and is a really competent FCP tech GURU, please contact me. Thanks you. William Gazecki wgazecki@earthlink.net
Hey William,
First thing we need are some details - lots of details, i mean everything possible under the sun please! Latest verion of everything as in 10.5.6 and FCP 6.0.5? what IO card to you have attached and what version of software is that? What storage are you using, how is it attached to the system... You can't give enough information, the more the better in helping to try find the problem! Can you post up the crash logs? Cheers Josh
I don't know if this will help you but I had excessive crash problems in FCP 4 thru 5. I narrowed it down to Favorites.
Anytime i had a non native favorite in my favs bin fcp would crash in about 5-10 minutes into my editing. It crashed for the same reasons you have named. I did a fresh re-install and I have kept any plug-ins that were not FCP native out of the favorites bin ever since. NO Crashes since then. (knock on wood) """ What you do with what you have, is more important than what you could do, with what you don't have." > > > Knowledge + Action = Wisdom - J. Corbett 1992 """"
The other big factor for endless crashes is font corruption.
Validate all your fonts with Font Book or LinoType Explorer (Free Download) You could also try removing any additional fonts you have installed since you installed the Mac OS. But as Josh said, please give us as much information about your setup as possible. Otherwise we will be playing the guessing game for too long. For instant answers to more than one hundred common FCP questions, check out the LAFCPUG FAQ Wiki here : [www.lafcpug.org]
I was just working on a client system that matches your
set up and 1 project did you "crash" thing. Seems the project was sucking all the ram. I created a new project called XXX Extended with the same set up created a new sequence in the extended project Opened the old project (multiple times) and finally it landed Copied the old sequence media form the timeline and pasted that media into the new Project / Sequence
You are being very vague. When something like this happens, and you are seeking Tech Support, you have to break everything down into fine details...like EXACTLY WHEN is it crashing? On boot up? When scrubbing? When playing? When importing? Does it crash at the SAME POINT EVERYTIME? Every event creating a crash has a different cause. Be precise with your information if you want precise help. When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.
Thank you for the responses. Here is my system layout:
G5 MacPro 3.0 GHz octocore; 8GB RAM; OS 10.5.6; Radeon HD 2600 Display card; Sonnet E4P SATA Host Controller interfaced with four external 5-drive SATA RAIDs using SATA port multipliers and Softraid 3.6.7; 3-drive internal RAID also using Softraid; video interface is via a Decklink HD Extreme 2, using SW version 6.8.3; using FCS2, FCP 6.0.5; I have all the latest Pro Applications updates installed, and used the OS 10.5.5 combo update when installing the OS. I use a Kensington Orbit Optical trackball, and a Wacom Intuous3 9x12 pen tablet, with a Logic FCP keyboard. Crash causes seem to vary, but typical are: opening a bin set to "large icons"; moving a clip onto the timeline from the viewer or a bin (including when a bin is set to "list" mode); scrubbing on the timeline or the viewer; scrolling the timeline. Can also happen when applying plug-ins I generally have RT set to "Unlimited". and frame rate and video quality set to "Dynamic". I usually leave audio quality set to "high" for 8 tracks of playback. I work exclusively in AIC codec.
Yes, I have lots of 3rd party plug-ins:

Ok Mate, A couple of suggestions to kick things off, but even more info would be good. Had you updated any software, installed any hardware, made any kind of changes to the system in any shape or form before this problems started??
If i've covered stuff you've done sorry but its best to assume nothing and cover all options!: My first port of call after trashing prefs and caches is to isolate whether the problem stems from the sequence or project file that your working with. - first the sequence by cutting and pasting the contents into a new sequence, then the project by pasting the sequence into a new project... and several times this has fixed the problems. Although you've done a clean install a fast and efficient way to narrow down possible software issues is to create a new user account - that way highlighting if the problems stem from a the users library. when you do that DONT install any drivers, don't use your wacom tablet etc etc, just load up FCP, and a new project from easy setup. Grab some media and copy it to your internal drive and stick it in the fcp project and play around - see if you can recreate the problem and get fcp to crash on you. The errors are all badaccess/kern protection failure which is a data access error with the thread attempting to write to read only memory. Because you've done a clean install my next port of call would be to look at the hardware. Take out the sonnet card and if you have a firewire drive to spare plug that in and set it as your scratch disk. Try working with a bit of media off the drive (don't use any non stock plugins) and rendering to it. If you still have problems then that should rule out issues with the external storage. more soon...
Thanks. I ithink it's the plug-ins. I can deal with trouble-shooting that, replacing them one at a time over time.I removed them all and it looks like the symptoms have abated. Still watching the situation carefully, but so far so good. Thanks for the feedback- this has been a tough one.
WG
I'm still dealing with it. yes, I did remove ALL the plug-ins. There was a definite improvement. Then i started putting ones back in, starting with what I use the most (the essentials). That seemed OK, but then I added a coulpe more and things started to get whacky. So I just took them out and am working again. We'll see. It all seems really touchy.
Can't do much about the Sonnet card right now. All my media hangs off of it (12TB). No Sonnet, no work. But I don't think that is a central issue. That card has a problem from time to time on boot-up, but that's about it. Most of the tech gurus I know swear by it, too. I'm really still not sure what's going on, other than pulling hte plug ins seems to have made a significant difference. But I'm not so sure, either. I'm beginning to think there might be an intermittent hardware issue, possibly temperature related. If I get through the woods for sure I'll post my findings. Thanks.
Don't ever just "put plug-ins back"...reinstall them. Download the newest versions of all the plug-ins and DELETE the old ones. Could have a corruption in there.
And the Sonnet card...no matter who swears by them, there's always the possibility of a corrupt driver. Download & install the latest driver. Nothing cleans out the system better than fresh installs. When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.
Steady on, one thing at a time - if you change lots of elements to the system you wont ever get to the point of isolating the issue - (i made that mistake the other night troubleshooting a misbehaving protools suite). Give it some time checking the system before making more changes.
What makes you think there might be a temperature issue? I would err away from that thought purely because I thought you said that this was only an FCP issue? An intermittent hardware issue would affect the whole system. is the external RAID via the sonnet card only used for editing- or rather are you only read/writing to it when using FCP or do you work off it via other apps ie photoshop etc. ??
Thank you- good advice. I DO try and only change one thing at a time, then wait to allow results to show. Hadn't thought about re-installing vs "putting back" the plug ins. Will do.
I do use the Sonnet controlled RAIDS with other apps (Photoshop mainly), and there have been no problems there. I have re-installed the Sonnet driver recently- didn't appear to make any difference. As far as suspecting anything hardware related- I'm really just musing. After awhile of this sort of thig, you start to get paranoid. I know that hardware malfunctions are rarely subtle, or intermittent (sometimes, but in my experience most intermittencies are due to problems with physical connections). What got me started on that vector was a line in a crash report that mentioned "Processor #5". I started wondering about that fact that there are 8 processors, and those little buggers can get finicky, and if only one had a little problem, it could throw the whole system out of whack... Thanks again. I will report back any meaningful progress. WG

------------------------------------------------------- > ... Here is my system layout: > G5 MacPro 3.0 GHz octocore; 8GB RAM; OS 10.5.6... William, I know with long-time Apple users dropping "G5" can be hard to do. However, the Intel-based Macs are not G5s - they're Intels. Intel Xeon to be more accurate. You can see for yourself on the "about this computer" in your Apple menu. And I theorize that to be one part of the problem. A new chip which uses different coding than the G5, a new operating system (Leopard) - which is reportedly the buggiest OS Apple has ever put out, along with a new version of Final Cut Studio all make for a bad day at the office. I too have and am going through what you deal with. In August, I was on a movie done on a 5 month old Xeon Octocore, Leopard, FCS2 - all the goodies, but nothing ever updated in those 5 months. I purchased through the company a CalDigit HD One (Fantastic unit, BTW). It required me to update the OS, FCS2, plus the drivers that came with the HD One. An Avid Editor reluctantly was talked into taking the job (promise of a second Avid job) he never wanted to learn FCP. I told him I'd be right there every step of the way. That system crashed 5 - 8 times a day. I jumped through all the hoops, re-installing everything, throwing away preferences, removing third-party bla, bla, bla. Nothing helped. Needless to say, we didn't win over an Avid Editor that day. In October, I started a new movie. This system was brand new and already set up before I came in. Again Intel Xeon, OSX 10.5, and FCS2. For dailies I had very little problem. However, my Editor would report to me the next day when I saw him that the system crashed several times that day. When it crashed on me I would always send a detailed report of exactly what I was doing when it crashed - always including the phrase "spinning wheel of death." Finally, just before Christmas, Apple released a new update for the OS and FCS2. Our system went from crashing up to 30 times a week down to maybe 5 to 10 times a week. So, I say it's just a matter of waiting for Apple to finally fix all the little bugs that are making our lives hell. Here's to hoping that day comes soon. I feel for you, man! JD I
I am so NOT surpised by what you say. It's really the only thing that makes sense. Because what DOESN'T make sense is all this meticulous re-building when there is no apparent problem with the system that warrants such demanding attention. People who have 10, 20 years experience in computers generally don't mess up their systems to the degree that they need to be completely rebuilt from scratch, let alone multiple times in a short span. I've NEVER had to do a complete re-install, let alone more than once.
And the ony thing that doesn't work properly is FCP. Everything else is GOLDEN. It's ridiculous. The G5 nomenlalture thing hadn't occurred to me, but yes, these are NOT G5s, they are MacPro's. WG
>I know with long-time Apple users dropping "G5" can be hard to do.
>Code Type: X86 (Native) X86 means you're running an Intel machine. Period. G4s and G5s will have "PPC" for the code type. > a new operating system (Leopard) - which is reportedly the buggiest OS Apple has ever put out Leopard isn't so buggy now. On the onset, before June, it was fairly buggy. By the time the .3 releases came out for FCP and Leopard, it wasn't so bad and I was starting to like working on both of them. Isolate everything, down to the Sonnet card, but do it slowly. Some stuff may need firmware/driver updates. www.strypesinpost.com
Thank you. I'm going to live with my current config for a week or so, just to observe.
I'll report back... Hopefully my system is "as good as it gets". Thanks for all the feedback- many small suggestions have been helpful. I don't really know if I'm in the clear, yet- have to do more work to see. WGazecki
On the topic of multiple crashes...that is not FCP or the OS's fault. That has to be either a bad font / bad plug-in / bad driver. I have been beating the snot out of FCP over the last 6 years in multiple configs full of plug-ins, thousands of fonts (managed through Suitcase Fusion) and numerous peripherals (FW800 / Kona Cards / PCI RAID cards / PCIe SATA cards / etc) and in 6 years I can count on my 2 hands how many times I have crashed. I did a total reinstall ONCE when a bad Digital Voodoo card screwed the pooch and gave me Kernal Panics every time I booted FCP. I didn't even have to reinstall...just pull the card.
It is not FCP or the OS or the machine. It is something else. When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.
