Quicktimes with the av suffix

Quicktimes with the av suffix

Hello,

I recently digitized several Panasonic 720P tapes and noticed that in addition to the quicktime files that were created, I also have duplicate quicktime files with the exact same file name but with av at the end.

The drive is formatted correctly - so there are no limits on file size!
Neither the LIMIT CAPTURE/EXPORT nor the LIMIT CAPTURE NOW are checked in my scratch disk tab.

I have no trouble playing these clips in FCP ....so I'm really not sure what ramifications there may be later?

Does anyone know what I might be dealing with here?

Thanks
Sherril

Did you run "Capture Now" on those clips? Those -av files probably contain nothing, and are created when you hit a blank spot on the tape while running Capture Now.

I did use Capture Now!!! -
Do you know if these files are going to cause me any headaches when onlining??
Can I delete them?
I've never run into this before....
Thanks

Yes you can delete them they shouldn't be linked to anything in your project.

If in doubt open finder in column view and run through the av files to check.

or open them all in Quickview if you have Leopard.

Thanks to both of you ...

When I try to open them from finder level I get an error message:
"The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file"

I'm running Tiger!

Someone had mentioned they could be indicative of "dropped frames"...does that
sound right in this instance?

Possible, but FCP will usually either create a new clip or warn on timecode break (depending on your setting). They can also be created when you hit the end of the tape and FCP tries to find footage to capture.

Yup, the -av files probably don't contain any useful video information. Move that to trash, and double check on your capture files in FCP, like Ben said.

A good reason to never use Capture Now. If I capture a whole tape, I'll set in and outs and batch capture that one clip.

Check the space on your hard drive - I don't know how many versions back this was in FCP - but there was a version that - if you hit capture now and it aborted somehow - you ended up with one of those AV files devouring all the space on your hard drive even though - technically there was nothing in them

Something about how the program reserved as much space as possible for the Capture Now and then if it aborted - didn't free it - often required a shut down - then some tricks to get rid of that file --

That was commonly attributed to having an incompatible version of FCP and QT (FCP 4.5 with I think QT 7.3 and above).

What computer are you using? What drive? How is the drive formatted? Mac OS Extended? FAT 32?

Assuming the drive is HFS Extended, I want you to look at your Capture Scratch window and check to see if the little "Capture Audio and Video to Separate Files" is enabled.

Disable it!

Nope - these "av's" are tiny -- like 7KB and I'm on FCP 6.0.6
Thanks though.

Nope Loren - that was NOT enabled in Capture scratch.

Tom - Drives are GTech Raid2 - formatted Mac OS Extended
Mac Pro G5 10.4.11
FCP 6.0.6

I think the Capture Now "bug" is what I have run into here.
