SD to HD

Hello all,

We are working on an SD 4x3 (720x480) show and we need to uprez it to true HD (1920x1080). We have plenty of graphics and we need to know how we lay out them out so we don't lose them in the up conversion. Are there any guides available out there? We will probably do the up conversion using the teranex ( [www.teranex.com] ).

We're using FCP on a Mac pro

Thanks for all your help,

A.

We have plenty of graphics

if you are not generating these in FCP,
definitely make sure you create those graphics at your HD frame size.

your best bet is to up-res a textless version of your show (terranax is good for this),
then re-apply the graphics.

hang on... 4/3?
why???

if you know your end result is 16/9, work in a 16-9 sequence in FCP.

Hello Nick, thanks for your reply.

the show was shot in 2003 with mini dv at 4x3, we finished in that format. If we use a 16x9 (anamorphic) sequence then FCP will stretch it and we don't want that. Is this right?

thanks,
A.

hi, antonio,

i understand.

how "finished" is "finished"?
do you have your original timeline with clips & media?
are the graphics separate?
that would be good.

but you ARE making a 16/9 version of your show.
so you either stretch it,
or blow it up and crop the top & bottom.

obviously you need to be able to control what and how you crop.

options are to do your re-framing at the SD stage by working in a Standard Def 16/9 sequence,
then blow that up to HD.
OR
blow up your 4/3 to HD,
pillar-boxing or stretching it so as to retain ALL the image,
then do your re-framing in an HD sequence.

i cant really comment on which would be better quality than the other,
although i *suspect* the second option might be a tiny bit better

but the first option seems simpler to me.

I'm just beginning to test this product now, but look at Topaz Labs' Enhance to upscale DV to NHD (near high def) quality. Might be enough. Interesting algorithm, gets extra data from sampling neighboring frames. Not expensive (US$350.00), but looks like it requires deinterlacing for best effect, and I suspect it will be slow-- ideal for a multiprocessor machine like the 8-Core which can be dedicated to processing.

Just setting up test clips now.

For stills, definitely what Nick said.

Hello Loren,

That looks like a great product, thanks for the tip. We'll give a test to see if it works for us.

Our issue is actually how do we design the graphics in SD so when we convert to HD we don't lose them. I am thinking that the best solution will be to create all the graphics in HD, then insert them back in the timeline once the conversion is done.

Thanks for the reply,

A.

Hey Nick, good suggestions man, thanks. All the graphics are separate, done in AE, so we're thinking do the graphics in HD and inserting them back after the up conversion. It will be easier to resize the graphics to HD in AE.

Thanks for the commments,

A.

Boris Continuum 6 suite has an uprez plug

and Red Giant sells Instant HD (Fcp & AE) and Instant HD Advanced ( AE)

anybody compared Instant HD Advanced with Topaz ?

I assume Teranex is a hardware box ? I mean you buy some gear ... right ?
