Exporting FCP sequence into After Effects CS5 without expensive software

Hi there,

I'm the proud owner of CS5 now, never worked with Adobe stuff before.
So I want to export my FCP sequence into AE without purchasing extras software like Automatic Duck or the Boris XML.
I have no effects in the sequence besides time remapping and opacity setting changes.

What's the way to go?

There was this script from Popcorn Island. You can use the script directly if you're sending it to AE in the same machine. I haven't tried it on CS5 yet, so I don't know how well it works, but it worked pretty well in CS4.

Cool, I'll check it out.

Will report.

It looks good ont their website and they say it should work with CS5.

But I'm too retarded to make it work:

When I go to File/Scripts it won't show up.

How did you install yours?

I just downloaded the file, unzipped it and double clicked. It opened the program but it doesn't seem to be integrated in AE.

I figured it out. Went to the Adobe website and they told me to put the script with the other ones.
Applications/AdobeCS5/Scripts

Duuh.

Other question:
I wanted to apply Red Giant Looks to one of the clips and it said "invalid filter".
What to do?

Do you mean you applied the filter to the clip in FCP, then exported to AE using the script, and the filter didn't register in AE?

Yea, you have to manually import the script. I mentioned both the PC and the Mac paths, on my blog.

As far as I know, the script only imports the clips into AE as a composition. Shouldn't affect applying of effects in AE.

My FCP sequence appeared as a composition in AE.
When I wanted to apply Magic Bullet Looks to one clip it said "Invalid Filter".

Then I tried to apply Magic Bullet Misfire Grain and it worked.

As it did with some other Filters.

I have the feeling it's an AE problem or just me since I'm new to AE.

If you import the clip directly into AE and throw that into a new comp in AE, can you apply the effect to the clip?

No I can't.
I think it's my lack of knowledge with AE. I don't want to waste your time. I have to sit down and study.

- and I decided to finish my project in FCP. It works just fine.

Thank you,

Jan

Yea. It depends on your acquisition format. For most broadcast formats, FCS works just fine. For motion graphics and simple vfx, AE is like a multi-purpose swiss army knife.
