Merged multiclip match clip nightmare (it's all production's fault)

So the crew had three days where the sound timecode and the two cameras all three had different timecodes. We sync each clip using the merge command and then multiclip everything. All is well. That is, until I have a track of sound only and then highlight it and click on match clip or match multiclip. Then I get a completely different picture, the picture that matches the original sound timecode rather than the picture that matches in the merged clip. Of course I can solve it by exporting all the merged clips but that would not reconnect so my assistant would have to rebuild all the dailies multiclips and then match back the one scene I already cut. There's no setting that would make a match clip match to the merged clip? This sucks.
