One suggestion is to know exactly which camera your files came from. And if we know that, we can probably get a better, and perhaps free tool from the manufacturer to access those files.
And you should always archive the entire contents of the card, not copy just the mxf files, as some mxf formats are OP-Atom (eg. Panasonic P2), so the video is stored separately from the audio, and you'll end up with video with no audio, or vice versa.
Calibrated has a solution for native importing of MXF files. That is perhaps more economical than mxf4mac, which probably has the sleekest solution (non reference QT movies).

Premiere Pro should be able to import it without issues, if you also have PPro in your workstation.
