What is File Error Unknown Volume? HELP!
September 01, 2005 11:49AM
Hello,

I'm running FCP 4.5 on powerbook 667 (slow, it usually gets the job done)

I recently purchased a new external hard drive (acomdata 250 GB ext firewire Hard drive) and I'm trying to open up some of my project files saved in this new hard drive and I get this message

"file error: Unknown Volume"

at this point, my project will simply not open up.

does anybody have an answer for this problem.

any suggestions would GREATLY be appreciated

Copy the files to an internal drive and try opening them from there. Also, what's the file size of your project files? Alarm bells should go off if the file size is unreasonably small.
hey I think everything is back together again,

thank you very much,

do you know why this happened?

thanks again

This is one of those adorably vague Final Cut Pro warnings. Sorry, many things could have caused this. The most common cause I've seen is if your project file is already open and then you change the name of the file in Finder, which results in FCP trying to save to a file that no longer exists. That doesn't seem to be what you had, though. But I'd take a careful look at your external drive -- is it properly formatted (Mac OS Extended)? Have you run Disk First Aid and DiskWarrior on it?
