It's over 2.5x faster at HDV renders and encodes than the previous PowerBook G4. It compares quite favorably to the G5 towers... Also, on the PB G4, you were forced to playback HDV at "medium" quality. The MBP will playback at "high" quality now, so the video looks even better, plus you get better RT perby PfA - Café LA Re: Flex File 35mm help - 17 years agoI would recommend a telecine to D5, HDCAM or HDCAM-SR. Then have your post house capture through a Kona card to DVCPRO HD 720p 24. Have them give you an ALE too (ALE because not all flex files will have TC24). Now you're editing with compressed HD for the offline (and it will look GREAT), you're cutting at the correct aspect ratio, your TC matches film edge or keycode 1:1, and you can do itby PfA - Café LA Re: Shake is now ONLY $499 - 17 years agoWow... lots of conjectures and rumors abound here. We are committed to video professionals and effects, and have publicly stated that we will begin work on the next generation of Shake compositing software. While we're excited about the innovations we can bring in the future, pricing Shake at $499 makes it available to the widest possible audience of Final Cut editors today. -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: Shake is now ONLY $499 - 17 years agoOh happy day! ;-) I thought you guys would be receptive to the news... Cheers, Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Shake is now ONLY $499 - 17 years agoShake 4.1 was released today and it's now ONLY $499! That's pretty damned cool... now any FCS user can get Shake and start using it with their projects!!! Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: Sequence settings for AG-HVX200 720HD footage - 17 years agoFinal Cut 5 supports import directly from this camera in the 720 24pn format without the use of any conversions. From the FILE menu, select IMPORT > Panasonic P2. You can upgrade from 4.5 to the complete Final Cut Studio 5.1 package for only $199.... -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: JVC GY-HD100A - compatibility - 17 years agoChris Rogers: The statement you've made -- "Apple, in their infinite wisdom, has the codec/updater to make it work natively, but have decided to wait until the NEXT upgrade instead of making it available immediately. Very sad. Digital FilmTree demoed its use at NAB to show how they post SCRUBS." ... is unfortunately negative. We don't arbitrarily hold technology to frustrate our custby PfA - Café LA Re: Sony PDW 350 - 17 years agoWe demonstrated native XDCAM HD support at NAB in Final Cut Studio. That support was delivered in FCP 5.1.1 (a free software update for Final Cut Studio 5.1 owners). The 2nd component needed is the Sony XDCAM Transfer software. This brilliant piece of software lets you ingest media directly into the FCP browser IN THE BACKGROUND while you're editing. It will be available directly from Sony shoby PfA - Café LA Re: How to convert 60i NTSC Stock footage to 24p in FCP? - 17 years agoDon't forget you can also use the "Advanced Format Conversions" in Compressor to do these kinds of conversions. It uses Optical Flow image analysis technology and delivers beautiful results... but it takes time! -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Weird dimensions when exporting for iPod - 17 years agoActually, Apple have not forgotten about square vs. non-square! The version of FCP you're using does not support output to video iPod. The recent Compressor update (for Final Cut Studio 5.1) includes a preset for encoding video to iPod. It outputs the correct sizes: 320x240. It also includes an anamorphic size, and a 1.85 and 2.35 size. You can upgrade from FCP4 into the complete Final Cutby PfA - Café LA Re: HDV general Error - 17 years agoGeneral error sounds like a codec error... or maybe just a corrupt HDV stream. Have you tried capturing from a different tape? Are you capturing the entire tape, or are you logging and capturing. Try logging and capturing smaller clips. Also try a different tape. If the problem still persists, I would go to your /Library/QuickTime folder and trash the HDV codecs. Re-install them. It may jby PfA - Café LA Re: Live Type..no more drag and drop? - 17 years agoI've never seen this, Andy. Try renaming it with the .ipr file extension at the end. If you're using .mov I don't think it will work. -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: HDV Camera Conundrum - 17 years agoWe announced at NAB that a future release of FCP would support both 720p 24 and 25. While we can't divulge specifics of ship dates, rest assured the technology was actually up and running and demonstrated at NAB in April. On a slightly different topic, the Kona 3 will do a simultaneous down-convert of HD to SD for your output to DigiBeta PAL. If you want to avoid a software-based transcode I woby PfA - Café LA Re: to upgrade or not to upgrade... - 18 years agoCheck www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade for all of the details. -Paul from Appleby PfA - Café LA Re: HDV with FCP 5 on Intel iMac - 18 years agoHDV performance is up to 2.5x faster on MacBook Pro (when compared to the previous PowerBook G4). It's awesome.... we're showing full-quality multistream playback. Using Dynamic RT, we're up to about 6 streams.... -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Features cut on FCP - 18 years agoThis fall we have 5 (that I know of) features cut with FCP: DreamWorks' "Dreamer" Fox's "Little Manhattan" Universal's "Jarhead" (Murch) Disney's "Valiant" Warner Bros.' "Corpse Bride" Go to apple.com/pro to read about the production workflows used. There's currently an article posted about Dreamer. -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: Whats with all the rendering? - 18 years agoSounds like a media type and sequence mismatch which forces you to render everything. The Sequence Settings (under the Sequence menu) must match the properties of the media you're trying to edit. For example, if you're media is 23.98 DV, then your sequence must be set up the same way. -PfAby PfA - Café LA Re: monitoring HDV - 18 years agoUsing a 23" cinema display gives you a resolution of 1920x1200. You can play back your HDV at a 1:1 pixel perfect aspect ratio on this display using Digital Cinema Desktop. This is the simplest, and probably most economical way to do it. For offline/preview work, it's the best way to work and see your real-time cuts and effects when working with HDV. Adding a BlackMagic or AJA Kona 2 carby PfA - Café LA re: HD offline workflow - 18 years agoHowdy, a) The big benefit comes with the conform and online process. If your offline editing timebase is the same as your online, then conforming and finishing the show is MUCH easier (there will be a 1:1 correlation between the offline frames and the online frames). In addition, professional HD down-converters are quite common at all post facilities these days and you're footage will look greby PfA - Café LA Re: Digital stills as Movie Frames - 18 years agoAs an aside, Tim Burton's new movie, "THE CORPSE BRIDE" was edited with FCP. The entire film was shot using Canon Digital SLR still cameras! There was an article about it in the last month's Editor's Guild magazine. Looks like we've got another Tim Burton on our hands here... :-)by PfA - Café LA Re: HELP! Timeline won't play - 18 years agoJerry, Here's a simple one that might be the culprit. Click in the Canvas window (the one on the right) and from the 'zoom' pop-up menu, select "Fit to Window". Now try to play back. It sounds simple, but if you have scroll bars in the Canvas window when you try to play back, it'll stutter and drop frames. The goal is to have the video scaled smaller than the window in which you'reby PfA - Café LA Re: Question about HDV - 18 years agoWe support JVC HDV devices in 720p 30 only. 24fps modes are not supported. As for the PC vs Mac speculation at the top-- FCP5 is the ONLY shipping NLE that can edit HDV in it's native format. The other apps you mention all transcode the HDV into an intermediate format, resulting in a generation of quality loss. For more information on FCP's unique NATIVE HDV editing capabilities, the benefitsby PfA - Café LA Re: Academy Leader - 18 years agoThey're on the install disk in the extras folder. Cheersby PfA - Café LA Re: Film Set Up? - 18 years agoFCP 5 can now import/export Telecine logs. In fact, most of what used to be done in Cinema Tools can now be done directly in FCP. You still need Cinema Tools to manage the database. There is a synchronize to CT database command in FCP5 too. Hope that helps...by PfA - Café LA Re: Can I... - 18 years agoThis is a confusing thread and there are a lot of different opinions. I hope to offer a little bit of clarity. First, the requirement for editing HD (any kind: HDV, DVCPRO HD, and UNCOMPRESSED) are 1GHz processor (G4/G5) or faster and minimum 1GB of RAM. So yes, you CAN edit HD on a G4. Processor's aside, different HD formats have different disk bandwidth requirements. HDV = 3.6MB/s. DVCPRby PfA - Café LA |
