I will try dumping prefs and see what happens. OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Trouble with transitions - 17 years agoGotcha. So if there is not enough media and I want to do a decent crossfade, I guess I have to use V1 and V2 and fade out using V1's opacity while I fade in on V2, right?by Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Problem involving playback of source clips. - 17 years agoThis problem is addressed in the FAQ (stuttering video). You connected your Sony cam to the external HD using Firewire, but did you connect your external HD to your Macbook Pro using Firewire, too? If you connected via USB, that is where your problem is. Another problem could be lack of memory on your Macbook or HD, Sometimes when you capture, a file is placed into the Capture Scratch folder wby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: speakers - 17 years agoWayne, this question interests me. I bought a pair of M Audio Pro Studio 4 speakers about a year ago. How do they fare in listening quality? Can I trust them for accuracy if editing for broadcast? OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Trouble with transitions - 17 years agoHow can this be? I inserted the transition right between the two clips, at the outpoint of the first clip, and both clips are 20 secs long.by Outdated Mac user - Café LA Trouble with transitions - 17 years agoI took a look at the FAQ and Ken Stone's article and am following instructions but still having trouble. I use FCP 3.0. I am trying to insert a crossfade transition between two clips. Both clips are at least 20 seconds long, and I want to insert a 5 second crossfade between the two. I know I need at least 15 frames of handle on either side for a 1 second transition. But when I place the playheadby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Best export format!? - 17 years agoLoren, I have found that the best way to save is NO COMPRESSION. I actually had AE installed on both my Mac and my PC and could not get files to transfer over because they had been saved with H64 compression. In your prefs, also make sure that you save as Millions of Colors + because this way, AE on both platforms will be able to pick up any alpha channels you have in the QT file.by Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: How to create scrolling text on split screen - 17 years agoThanks Jude, Derek. It is really quite simple, but as I had not tried to do it....I do use a monitor, but did not bother to turn it on while attempting this a.m. If I have problems, I will post. OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: How to create scrolling text on split screen - 17 years agoHey Derek, First of all, thanks for saving my butt a number of times. I began to do what you suggested and it seems to work. I do have a question, however. I am using the text generator and dragging onto timeline. I want the background to be black and the scrolling words to be in white. I know how to change the color of the letters, but what is the best way to change the color of the backgrby Outdated Mac user - Café LA How to create scrolling text on split screen - 17 years agoI would like to create a split screen where the text scrolls down (white letters on a black background) only on the left half of the screen and an image from DV footage appears on the right half of the screen (yeah, I know, it's been done a million times). I know how to split the screen and crop the DV image, but how do I get the text to scroll on the left half? What I tried doing is creating a sby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Audio: MP3, AIFF vs. WAV, OMF for ProTools - 17 years agoThanks, Nick and Derek OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Audio: MP3, AIFF vs. WAV, OMF for ProTools - 17 years agoFCP experts: Three audio questions. First one: I want to incorporate songs from a CD into a project. The songs are stored as MP3, and import into FCP as MP3. I was told to NEVER use compressed files, esp. MP3. Should I convert these songs into AIFF using Pro Tools before sticking into FCP? Second one: is it preferable to use AIFF or WAV files in my FCP project? Will quality vary? OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Zebra lines 2 / filters to correct underexposure - 17 years agoFirst of all, my thanks to all who gave me input on the zebra lines. I set zebras to 100% and tried to stay below this at all times. Shots were much better. One type of shot that I had a hard time with was with the talents in the shade under a roofed terrace with the bright sky as a backdrop. The reflector was hard to use because there was no sun coming in from above, so there was very littleby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Zebra lines - 17 years agoRobert, Earlier Mike Recommended leaving setting at 80% on talent with slight zebras on cheeks and forehead. Your mail suggests I leave the zebra setting at 100% and not allow any stripes on faces at all. Are these two scenarios pretty much equivalent? With 100% zebras, how much zebra do you allow (earlier poster mentioned about 30% max). OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Zebra lines - 17 years agoA buddy scared me with the following saying, "NEVER NEVER USE AUTO FOCUS." That is why I stay away from Auto Iris on the XL1. Thanx for the tip, better than throwing my camera out!by Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Zebra lines - 17 years agoThanks Tessa, Arod. In answer to your question, T, I have a Canon XL1. Good camera, I just got to understand it a little better. So Arod, having the zebra lines at 30% (or even 50%, as you mention) will not kill the image? What I am worried about is 'broadcast safe' imaging. I don't want to spend hours fixing up in post to make broadcast safe, so I want to know what my maximum zebra lines are.by Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Zebra lines - 17 years agoThe camera (XL1) lets me vary the zebra settings between 80 and 100, but I cannot have two settings on at the same time. So if I am understanding you right, I should not let 80 zebras go beyond the forehead and cheek area of the talent, and if shooting a landscape, I can use the 100 zebras setting but not allow the zebras to appear. What if I have the talent in front of a landscape and theby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Zebra lines - 17 years agoOn FCP some of my footage shot is overexposed. I am going to have to use the Zebra lines when I shoot in order to help me get better shots. My camera allows me to set zebra lines from 80% to 100%. I'd like to know: 1. What percentage should I set the zebra lines to? 80%? 100%? 2. How much can the zebras appear on the talent's face before I know that the shot is overexposed? Thanks, OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Staggered playback when burning QT clips to DVD - 17 years agoThanks, guys, for the input, it helped me to understand this basic issue. Just my two cents...this forum has helped me solve tons of issues. My thanks to LAFCPUG and all the pros on this site. OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Staggered playback when burning QT clips to DVD - 17 years agoSo what you are saying is that I can save them on the DVD, load files onto another computer's HD and play the QT clips, i should be able to see them? Thanks for your reply, very helpful. OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Staggered playback when burning QT clips to DVD - 17 years agoI am sure there is a real simple answer to this, but I don't have it. I have a G4. I captured short DV clips (between 30 seconds and 3 minutes each) using FCP 3.0, saved clips on 500 GB HD as Quicktime Movies (v 7.1.3), then dragged QT clips directly from HD onto Maxell DVDs and CDs. I did not save them in the FCP timeline and then export as QT movie. Burn was successful, but when I tried tby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Problems viewing video upon capture - 17 years agoJude, thanks. The prefs were screwing up my firewire connection. I trashed them and voila. OMUby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Problems viewing video upon capture - 17 years agoMy problem is the following: I have connected a camcorder to my G4 via Firewire, I have turned on my camcorder, I indicate NEW PROJECT in FCP 3.0, and I select LOG AND CAPTURE. In the log and capture screen the message PREVIEW HAS BEEN DISABLED, so even though the camera is running and timecode in the log and capture screen is advancing, there is no video image. When I indicate CAPTURE NOW, tby Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Audio nightmare - 17 years agoThank you, Loren and BoydMCC, for your helpful answers. An update; 1. I used the Merge Clip feature, and it works well. 2. The sounds of the two voices that I don't like averages -15 db and they are still crunchy. When I bring down the level, the crunchiness is still there. The audio did not sound that bad when I hooked the camera up to a TV set and listened. I have captured about an hour's worth of video, reassembled, color corrected and added transitions, and I would now like to save on a DVD. I recorded a four person interview with two different cameras. Each person was miked with a separate lavalier. Unfortunately, I miked to the wrong cameras so that the sound of the two people who appear in one camera went to the other camera. In FCP, I have correctly aligned all the video and audio in two separate video tracks and four separate audio tracks..by Outdated Mac user - Café LA Re: Video freezes, dropped frames and green lines - 17 years agoThanks for everyone for helping me out. It turns out the problem was I had the external HD hooked up to a hub via USB. I replaced the USB cable with a 400 firewire cable directly from the HD to my tower and the staggering problem was completely solved. What is amazing is that some people at Apple told me that in order to solve the problem, I should by a new G5 and update to FCP 5. I have a Dual 1 GHz G4 Power PC with 1 GB of RAM. I don't know how much memory I have on my video card, I don't know how to check this (it says VRAM is 56K, I don't know if this helps). I bought it in 2002 with Final Cut Pro 3.0. I have just started using this equipment for video editby Outdated Mac user - Café LA |
