There are a few different flavors of Dolby which you can read up on here. Just use the drop down menu and select which one you want to read about. Also here is another link to more links of some good reading on the subject. If I were to start explaining what it all means and how it works your head would probably explode. But you'll be happy to know that there is a pice of software that will help you do this if you insist on doing it yourself rather tha handing it off to a professional sound mixer but I think it will cost you a lot more to do it that way (even if you can get it rby Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: 5.1 surround question - 13 years agoJude Cotter Wrote: Am I thinking in the wrong direction here > somehow? Yes I think you are. I would not try to do a 5.1 mix in FCP. Do it in an Audio mixing program and bring the 5.1 stems back into FCP for the layback. The track assignments will then depend on the delivery requirements. Film layout would be L C R Ls Rs Lfe. SMPTE/ITU would be L R C Lfe Ls Rs. The other caveat here is was the DVD encoded with a 5.1 mix or at least an LtRt? If it was just encoded with a stereo mix you are SOL.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: How can I Delete Music, but Not Voice? - 13 years agoIf you have a dvd player with discrete 5.1 outputs you may be lucky enough to get a center channel of just clean dialogue.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: 5.1 surround mix plays back lower than stereo - 13 years agoA lot would depend on how the sound mixer did the stereo fold down. Is it an LtRt or a LoRo? Did they use a dolby encoder to do the fold down? If done correctly there is a reduction in the center and surround channels during the fold down to compensate for the summing affect. If this wasn't done then the stereo mix will sound louder.by Frank Nolan - DVD Studio Pro Re: Visible time code - 13 years agoThe reader will reflect the timecode of the sequence you are putting it on. The generator can be set however you want and will generate code independent of the sequence, so if you want the timecode to reference the sequence use the reader.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Editing console desk for sale - 13 years agoI have a 3 section editing desk by L & M Technologies of Burbank. It is the C113 on this site but without the top monitor section. It is in North Hollywood. It is in 3 separate sections and the legs can be taken off if needed for transportation. Make an offer. Changing from a 24fps editing timebase to a 23.98 will surely have an impact on this but it has nothing to do with DF or NDF as DF doesn't exist in that realm.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: Syncing 23.98fps sound mix with NTSC video - 13 years agostrypes Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I just got back from work, and that sounds like a > load of crap, so let me explain... > > > DF = 30 000 fps / 1001 = 29.97002997, or 24 000 > fps / 1001 = 23.976023976; > > NDF = 30 000 / 1001 fps * 1001/1000 = 30, or 24 > 000 fps / 1001 * 1001/1000 = 24 fps > > Therefore: &by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: Syncing 23.98fps sound mix with NTSC video - 13 years agoAndy Wills Wrote: > > The video file was created from a 24p NTSC file. On your old drive save your project and also do a "save as" and label it differently. Then you can select the new boot drive and use the latest version to open your copy of the project to see if everythingby Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: Converting frm DVCPROHD to SD for DVD burning - 13 years agoIs there any particular reason you need to convert to DVCPro50? We have just taken many 24p DVCPRo HD timelines and exported them straight to DVD studio Pro and make a standard def dvd. Bump the bit rate up from the preset to about 7.8 and it comes out looking pretty good.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: Using 24p correctly - 13 years agoDo you honestly think that "typical hollywood dvd's" are made using FCP and compressor? There is only the best camera for the job you need to shoot. 1) Work out what you want to shoot. 2) What is your target audience and deliverables 3) Figure out your budget. 4) Do some research on Cameras. 5) Do some research on work flow. 6) Decide on best camera suited to your needs.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: Sharing HDV QT files with someone who doesn't have FCP - 13 years agoJon Chappell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The only legal way for him to acquire the codec is > to purchase Final Cut Pro. It just took a bit of nudging back and forth 'till I got the sync right, but it worked fine. "Rules, best practices, most effective?" Hmmmby Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: HVX 24 pN capture problem - 13 years agoFirst off the HVX does not shoot 1080 24pN format. The 24 pNative is only available in 720p mode. It will shoot 1080 24p or 1080 24pA. From what you are describing it sounds like it was shot 1080 24p which is why it is showing up as 29.97. To edit in a 23.98 timeline it would have been better to shoot 24p Advanced. If you are viewing on an NTSC monitor you will still see interlacing scan lines. The major difference is the 200a has a mini dv tape deck as well as 2 P2 slots where as the 170 is strictly a P2 camera. Also the 170 controls are more like the DVX 100. If you need to shoot to mini dv occasionally get the 200a if not then the 170.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: OT: Editor relocating to L.A. area - 16 years agoA famous producer once said to me, it's not so much who you know (although that does help) he said "it's more important how you impress who you know"!by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: Is this firewire drive too slow? - 17 years agoharry323 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- ME-740U2F IDE to > USB2.0+1394A" but doesn't have a manufacturer's > actual name anywhere on it. > > Any further thoughts? > > Thanks again. > > Harry I think the problem may be that it has an IDE drive inside the enclosure. Canon did that for their XL-H1 watchmaker demo video, although they bypassed the tape step altogether and took the HD-SDI output of the camera straight into the NLE.by Frank Nolan - Café LA Re: What is Hi Def? - 17 years agoThink of it like this. As Ben has pointed out there are many different flavours of Hi-Def and when you compare it to standard def, which has a few flavours as well, it's not that different.
