Once I drag them (the .m2v & .ac3 file) into the DVD track, does DVD Studio Pro re-compress them with the encoder? I presumed the built-in encoder in DVD Studio Pro is to encode a full res quicktime file, should you drop it in the track without using Compressor. Does DVD Pro support blu-ray burning yet, or do I still need Toast? Thanks!by preditor - Café LA Long Term Storage - 12 years agoLooking for feedback on drives for long-term storage...full res output files and raw camera footage. I've tried the cheap route, with WD raids and had a drive failure...still want to stay on a budget of under $500 for 2TB of mirrored storage. Any experience with the GSafe? Swappable drives look good, but I heard there are issues with overheating. Anyone used NewerTech's 2+2tb Raid? Or OWC's?by preditor - Café LA Re: Compressor for DVD - 12 years agoDual proc...the source is 720p/60 HD, edited in Pro Res.by preditor - Café LA Compressor for DVD - 12 years agoI'm using Compressor for my project to have it ready for DVDPro, but after outputting my 45min. video in full res and dropping it into Compressor, it takes aprox. 5 1/2 hrs to compress for DVD, at the 2-pass setting. This seems long...using a dual core Mac tower. Any suggestions? Thanks!by preditor - Café LA Re: Shot at 24p...Airing 29.97 - 12 years agoThanks...I also tried the same 720x480 in Uncompressed 8bit SD and DVCPro50, which was also requested by the client. They looked about the same as DV. One solution I came up with was to add the graphics after the compression, in a DV timeline which reduced the sawtoothing somewhat. What is the best downres to SD from 1080i or 720p/60, which is mostly what I shoot in?by preditor - Café LA Shot in 1080i, 24p but airing 720x480, mpeg2 29.97 - 12 years agoFolks: My commercials were shot in 1080i, 24p and I'm outputting the full res Quicktime and putting it into Compressor to deliver the specs requested, 720x480, MPEG 2. I'm using the DVCam Anamorphic setting. The video looks fine, just a little softer, which I would expect, but the graphics have a lot of sawtoothing and there's some aliasing in the video. Is there a better setting in Compresby preditor - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: Shot at 24p...Airing 29.97 - 12 years agoThank you for the info...I'll read your blog. I do notice a lot of aliasing when I downconvert to the format they want. They're requesting DVCam (SD), 720x480 MPEG 2. The tests I've done, outputting the commerical in full res and then dropping it into compressor using the DV Anamorphic setting, the picture softens a bit, which is fine, but the graphics have sawtoothed edges. I will output the full res final and use Compressor to convert to DVCam. Will there be any issue with the 24p, since DVCam is 29.97? This is for broadcast. Thanks! There are only two keyframes, the beginning and the end...only changing the Center and Scale, basically zooming out on a Still JPEG. If I use Smooth from the pull down menu, the motion looks great at the end, but the Motion Path changes, revealing the edges of the frame. Using Flip4Mac HD with it's 720p setting...the video quality is good, but a little saw-toothed. The audio is out of sync. The audio default setting on Flip4Mac is "one-pass", 44.1 khz. I tried using lossless audio at 48 khz but the result is much more out of sync. My nextby preditor - Café LA Flip4Mac on a G5 - 13 years agoI'm converting several shows to .wmv for the web. They process fine on my Macbook Pro, although it takes almost an entire day to process a 22 min. show (720p24f to .wmv, full res). The same Flip4Mac is loaded on my older G5, but I get an error in Compressor - "3x encoder type unavailable". The Flip4Mac software is 2.3, which supposedly works with G5 & Intel running 4.0 or later.by preditor - Café LA Re: FCP 7 on a G5 - 13 years agoThanks for your help...it's been suggested that I upgrade my OS on the MacBook Pro no higher than 10.5.8, because it's a first generation machine. Others say the 6 OS if fine. My primary use of the computer is for FCP. Thanks for your input.by preditor - Café LA Re: FCP 7 on a G5 - 13 years agoThanks...upgrade is the way to go. FCS 3 will not work on the G5, right?by preditor - Café LA Isolating Color - 13 years agoI see a lot of videos that are turned to black & white with one or two objects colorized. It seems to me there's an easy way to do this in FCP, but I just haven't found it. Suggestions? Thanks!by preditor - Café LA FCP 7 on a G5 - 13 years agoI presume that there's no way to run Final Cut Studio 3 on my older G5 with the Mac processor, since I believe it also requires the OS upgrade and the Intel processor. Can I run Studio 3 on my Macbook Pro without upgrading the OS? Currently running 10.4.11 on the Macbook Pro. Thanks! Johnby preditor - Café LA Monitoring HD - 13 years agoI want to monitor the output of my Blackmagic Decklink Multibridge when editing in HD, but the picture sent to the monitor when the timeline is played is frozen. When I pause the timeline, it freezes the current frame. The timeline is 720p, Pro-Res. This occurs on the composite and DVI output of the bridge. When playing an NTSC 8 or 10-bit timeline, playback is fine. This on a G-5, OS 10.4.1by preditor - Café LA Re: Alias edges on DVD - 13 years agoI actually went back to DVD Pro, deleted the track and the asset that had the "sawtoothing"...created a new track and dropped the same asset back in, and the problem went away. It's possible it was recompressing? The assets are the MPEG2 and AC3 files that compressor created from the Pro Res timeline. Thanks!by preditor - Café LA Alias edges on DVD - 13 years agoI have created two DVDs w/ DVD Pro, utilizing the same assets, but the first DVD looks better that the second. The original material is 720p, output the timeline as a single Quicktime, not recompressed, and dropped it into Compressor at the 90min Best setting. The 25 min piece looks great on the first DVD, where it's the only video, but on the compliation DVD with the other pieces, there is a lby preditor - Café LA Re: Compressor Processing for DVDs - 13 years agoThe AVCHD files were logged and transferred natively, I guess from the new Sony NXCam but they end up ProRes. I cut them with my JVC 100U camera that creates Quicktime files so I edit in a ProRes timeline and there's no rendering. The 2 1/2 hour broadcast show is DVCProHD and it took about 25 hours to process. The DVDs look good, but 25 hours? On my G5 dual-core (an older one) it takes about 3 hrs to process 20min from the Pro-Res timeline...original material was AVCHD. My broadcast project, a DVCProHD timeline, is taking over 24 hrs to process 2 hrs, 35 min. Is this normal? Should I be outputting the timelines as full res Quicktime files first and thby preditor - Café LA Re: Lesser of evils for FCP (HDV v AVCHD) - 13 years agoCan you elaborate on the procedure for making disc images? I'd like to back up my cards with the AVCHD files onto something other than a hard drive. Data DVDs would be great...I could always re-transcode if I needed them again. I presume this means that all my transitions should be adjusted accordingly, ie: what I'm used to seeing as a 15 frame dissolve should be 30, etc.by preditor - Café LA Re: JVC ProHD Camera - 14 years agoAs a follow-up, this is a NEW, IN THE BOX camera. Please reply to email: jtv@att.netby preditor - lafcpug Market Editing Timebase - Still confused - 14 years agoStill confusion here on my part...if my video is shot 720p/60 or 1080i/60, does my timeline need to have an editing base of 59.94, or can I use 29.97. When I edit in the "60 base", it seems as though my 30 frame transitions are 60, etc. Since this a broadcast show, will my segment times be affected? Timelines are drop-frame. When I transcode the AVCHD and drop it in the timeline, the time line becomes ProRes422 and the pixels are "Square". Is this correct? Should it be ProRes HQ? I'm trying to keep rendering to a minimum, but I need the best quality possible, since most of this is for broadcast. I presume I would just add this card to the G5. Is it the same issue with the Macbook Pro? Would a SATA drive help?by preditor - Café LA Re: Trouble digitizing DVCProHD via Firewire - 14 years agoOkay, here's a couple of odd things. I was able to successfully digitize from the DVCPro machine with my Powerbook Pro via firewire without issue, but when trying to play the clip from the viewer or play the timeline, audio would play and the picture would be frozen. I would need to unplug the firewire cable from the DVCPro, quit Final Cut and bring it back up. Then all would be fine. I'm capby preditor - Café LA |
