Re: Check out my supercut of movie phone hangups - 13 years agoGeez guys, a little harsh? I really enjoyed this. Better than most YouTube supercuts, which are usually pretty obvious and boring, like 100 best movie insults or famous lines, etc. And FYI, there's no title safe on YouTube...by Dean R - Show and Tell Re: hard drive recommendation - 13 years agoThanks Ben, I guess I forgot to spell out 1080p, 23.98fps, 422. Not HQ. I'm familiar with RAIDS, just have never worked with ProRes before. Looks like I'll need one from what you say. Any one have any experience with ProMax storage? Their 8TB SATAMAX looks like a good deal;by Dean R - Café LA Re: hard drive recommendation - 13 years agoHuh?! Why would I lose footage? If you're talking about a drive dying, RAIDs can die too, can't they? I'd have backups in either case. I'm really hoping someone can provide a useful answer to my question: Is a RAID an absolute necessity for ProRes 1080p. Or is it simply recommended for optimal performance. Will I kick myself for trying to work with this format on non-raided SATA drives...by Dean R - Café LA Re: hard drive recommendation - 13 years agoBut is a RAID a necessity for ProRes 1080p? Would I be OK with a 4 port SATA card and 4x2TB external drives?by Dean R - Café LA hard drive recommendation - 13 years agoI'm gonna be working with ProRes 1080p footage for the first time, on a brand new 8 core MacPro. I'll need 6-8 TB of disc storage and have around $2,000 to spend. I'm inclined to look for an SATA RAID, but is that overkill for this situation? Any recommendations?by Dean R - Café LA capture card for feature film - 13 years agoBuilding a brand new system for a feature film, and finally upgrading from my old G5 to a MacPro and FCP 7. Will be editing ProRes 1080p 23.98. My needs are simple, though. Audio to a mixer and out to pro speakers, audio and video out to a DVD recorder, and monitoring on a decent quality big screen TV like a Panasonic VIERA or similar, probably via HDMI. This is for offline only. The price certainly is right.by Dean R - Café LA need to read SxS card on a G5 - 14 years agoI've got a G5 dual 2ghz, FCP studio 2, OSX 10.4.11, and I need to work with footage shot on a Sony EX3 and recorded to SxS pro cards. I need to get something to read these cards, so what are my options?by Dean R - Café LA menu return problem - 14 years agoI've got a pretty straightforward project. A main menu and 5 submenus which link to a total of 35 chapters, 6 chapters per submenu. I want each chapter to return the viewer to the menu where that chapter lives if they hit the "menu" button on their remote. Pretty simple, and as far as I can tell I've got it set up correctly. Each chapter marker has the correct menu selected in the inspeby Dean R - DVD Studio Pro Re: cutting a demo reel - 15 years agoMy friend the DP just wants a good looking DVD, the rest is up to me. Uncompressed SD is not a good option for my home system, but I've always been unhappy with how titles look In DV. I've never used ProRes, is that a good choice? Also, I know this isn't an MPEG Streamclip forum, but I've never done this before, and there are a lot of variables. All the DVDs are major studio releases, so tby Dean R - Café LA cutting a demo reel - 15 years agoI'm going to cut a demo reel for a cinematographer. I'll be ripping scenes from commercial DVDs of movies he's shot, using Mac the Ripper and Streamclip, then just burning a DVD of the edited reel. I'm just wondering if there's a consensus about the best codec to use. I'll be adding some titles, so maybe I should avoid DV? thanks, Deanby Dean R - Café LA gear for color correction - 15 years agoI was very intrigued by this article about CC'ing a feature film using FCP and magic Bullet Looks. We're shooting a ten minute promo trailer in preparation for a feature film, and want to test a similar workflow. We'll be shooting on a Viper FilmStream and recording to HDCAM SR. The entire budget for the eventual feature will be under $150K, so DIY color correcting seems to be the way to gby Dean R - Café LA Re: I think I found how to eliminate artifacts in HDV - 17 years agofilmman, I've noticed that in many of you posts you have often seemed to be obsessed with the idea that "experts" on this forum are not sharing their "secrets" about FCP. Yet here you hint at some new technique you've discovered, and then refrain from divulging any information at all. Ironic, dontcha think.by Dean R - Café LA Re: editing with H264 - 17 years agoDang that's true! The uncompressed files looked pretty good when I was cutting with them. But when I export my edit to H.264, it has a lot of compression artifacts, including these weird black dots that obscure the frame momentarily.by Dean R - Café LA Re: editing with H264 - 17 years agoI tried converting all the clips with the exact same frame size, frame rate and audio settings but chose compressor = none. Seems to work well, but the file size much larger.by Dean R - Café LA Re: editing with H264 - 17 years agolooks like I've got no choice but to convert to an editing friendly format, and the clips are fairly short so it shouldn't be too bad. So my question is, what would be a smart format to use, knowing that I'll go back to h264 in the end? I'm used to cuttingwith DV, so I've never dealt with this beforeby Dean R - Café LA editing with H264 - 17 years agoA client wants me to re edit some clips that he uses on his website. He doesn't have the source footage, so the clips are only available in the following format: H.264, 15fps, 320X240 The client wants the edit delivered in the original format. I've found that trying to edit with these clips causes FCP to crash a lot. Is that due to the H264 compression? I'm thinking I should convert tby Dean R - Café LA Premiere Pro to FCP - 17 years agoHas anybody done this? I've got a client who started a job in Premiere Pro 2 and wants me to take over using my FCP 5.1.4 system. They've got all their footage (HDV) imported and organized in Premiere and they've only done a simple rough cut that I'd need to work from.by Dean R - Café LA Re: OT: Can anyone out there make me feel better about owning a Mac? - 17 years agoDid you purchase a support package from ProMax? I did when I bought my system from them about two and a half years ago, and had some of trhe same problems you've got. Their tech support was excellent. They actually sent out a guy to make a house call and he was able to diagnose a problem with the motherboard on my G5, as well as give me a brief DVDSP tutorial.by Dean R - Café LA Re: time code inconsitancy with EDL - 17 years agoI've almost always had TC problems with EDLs out of FCP, especially on long/complicated sequences. I gave up trying after 5.0 came out, and never saw any official announcement that the problem had been fixed. If subsequent releases had indeed fixed it, and now it's broke again in 5.1.4. I'd be curious to know.by Dean R - Café LA disable sequence looping on playback? - 17 years agoAny way to do this? I'd like my sequence to stop playback when it reaches the end. Right now I add slug after the last frame to properly judge the cut, but maybe there's some setting I'm missing.by Dean R - Café LA Re: Do your Avid friends a favor... - 17 years agoThis is getting silly... I've been a member of the Editor's Guild for a long time, and I promise there is no secret cabal of Avid editors dedicated to keeping FCP down by spreading "disinformation". Of course there are plenty of misconceptions about FCP by folks who only know Avid. There's also plenty of nonsense about Avid spouted by people who view FCP as some kind of religion.by Dean R - Café LA 3D titles - 17 years agoI need to make some extruded, 3d titles. The Boris 3D titler doesn't do that. Live type sort of does, but it's pretty lousy. I've got to have 3D text that flys in, rotates, etc. Are there any plug ins that will work fromn within FCP, or do I need a seperate app, like Boris Calligraohy?by Dean R - Café LA Re: Using Cinema Tools - 17 years agoI always make a seperate cinema tools database for each dailies tape. Later on, when you're ready to generate lists, you will combine them into a single database.by Dean R - Café LA long export time - 17 years agoI've got a 5 minute DV sequence, cuts only plus a few titles. I'm exporting for the web using quicktime conversion on the "broadband - high" setting. The export takes about 30-35 minutes. Seems like a long time, is that normal? FCP 5.1.2 OSX 10.4.8 G5 Dual 2 ghz 2 GB RAM 500GB SATA raidby Dean R - Café LA Re: hi res titles - 17 years agoThanks, I'll definitely try DV50. This kind of "under ther hood" info about how text works in FCP seems to be hard to find. None of the books I own really go into it. Anyone know some good resources?by Dean R - Café LA |
