Re: lacie drives there is hope - 18 years agoI cannot recommend G-Raids highly enough. FW800 and capable of 8-bit and 10-bit uncompressed and DVCPRO HD. Rock solid...and great...LOCAL...tech support.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: How important is it to get pci-x slots - 18 years agoAvoid the PCI G5. If you EVER want to get a capture card in the future, you are going to need the PCI-X slots.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Offline HDV? (Graduating Undergrad Thesis Help) - 18 years agoCapture from the camera as DV. Have the camera downconvert the fotoage to DV and then capture via firewire. That is the best way to offline HDV. The timecode is retained for when you online. And when you online, your powerbook ain't gonna cut it. Dual G5 needed for this footage.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Major Footage Pixilation w/FCP 4.5 - NEED HELP - 18 years agoGod, is that Stock Answer THAT old? The OS. Upgrade the OS to 10.3.8. If you have 10.4, this isn't an issue. The main point is this: "DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at fby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Major Footage Pixilation w/FCP 4.5 - NEED HELP - 18 years agoThat is the nature of the beast. The resolution on the computer monitor will be lower. This is why it is always wise to have an external NTSC monitor or TV to show how things really look: #2 Playback is blurry Shane's Stock Answer #2: 1. Disable overlays on the canvas 2. I will bring them in case no one else can do this. You supply tape stock or do I need to bring some?by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: export - 18 years agoShane's Stock Answer #3: To export your DV project so there is no loss in quality, simply go to the File Menu and select EXPORT>FINAL CUT PRO MOVIE. Not Quicktime Conversion, fot this will compress the footage. Make sure the settings match your timeline settings, make it self contained and you are set. Nice job.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Obtaining permission from bands... - 18 years agoWhen I license music for a corporate piece, it is usually a flat fee. If the show is broadcast, then there are fees for how many airings and such, but you fall into the first catagory. I have licensed music for as little as $450. And worked on shows that licensed ONE SONG for $35,000. I'd offer them the lower amount. Go for $400 and see what they do. Or am I not supposed to spout out numberby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Obtaining permission from bands... - 18 years agoI'd suspect you'd have to pay them SOMETHING..as you are using their music to help make you money. You need to contact the record labels and have them get you the proper forms. If you find an unsigned band...even better. Then you deal with them directly and they get more of the money. But ethically you gotta pay them something.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: dv sequence settings & importing - 18 years agoWell, when you take a high res picture and render it, it then compresses it into the DV 5:1 compression, 4:1:1 color space. And by monitor you do mean external NTSC or TV, right?by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: FCP to Avid Export - 18 years agoGet Automatic Duck. It does a bang up job of exporting an EDL that an Avid can import. Why are you doing this though? Seems like such a pain to start on one NLE and shift into another.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: Mixing camera formats - 18 years agoAs I stated before, capture all the various formats at one resolution, i.e.dvcpro 50, and you will be fine. It is when it comes time to color correct that things will get interesting, with the varying colors all the cameras have...by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: set up - 18 years agoGo firewire straight in. That is a direct file transfer, no loss of quality. If you go in SDI then you will be compressing the footage...even 10-bit does it ever so slightly. And, if you go in via firewire you save room. Going in SDI at 8 or 10 bit takes up VAST amounts of storage...and requires higher speed drives. Just be sure that you capture both tape formats as one format in the machineby Shane Ross - Café LA Re: HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray - 18 years agoDell supports Blu-Ray, but Microsoft supports HD-DVD. You plan on sending something to be broadcast and you don't know what scopes are? If you don't even know what they are (waveform vextorscopes...you have them in FCP) then you cannot expect to deliver a tape to a network or station for broadcast. Yes, you do need an education. To get from downtown to Mission hills in 15 minutes, at 3:00pm. I paid $100 more (the regular price). Sigh.by Shane Ross - Café LA Re: BETA Master from iDVD copy??? - 18 years agoSheer insanity, and the engineers at the network you send it might easily kick it back to you. If you want the crappy video look, don't do it by giving them crappy video...you are going to have to master the use of the filters. Sending tapes to broadcast requires precise control over your material iDVD highly compresses the material, and putting that to tape will look...ugly. The Kona 2 is SDI and HD SDI only, while the LH has analogue inputs. As for drives, getting an External SATA array like The Burly (http://www.macgurus.com/productpages/sata/Burly8RHS.php) or a fibrechannel array like the Apple XServe or Medea are good option. Highlight ALL YOU OTHER CLIPS and go EDIT>PASTE ATTRIBUTES. Check the filters box and hit OK. c) I asked the same question at the last LAFCPUG meeting, and someone said that if you put SLUG on the top layer, then att the effect that it would do it.
