Re: I think I hate Avid (stupid rant) - 18 years ago<<Any Junior High Schooler can get their hands on a cracked copy of FCP and edit in 2 days. But I think the issue here is actually legality.by JustinB - Café LA I think I hate Avid (stupid rant) - 18 years ago/rant -on Just a somewhat pointless rant here, but Avid really drives me nuts. I've had a little experience with it in the past, but I've developed what skills I have on FCP. Recently I've been doing the odd extra shift on an Avid, and it infuriates me. I feel like I can't do anything. It's like editorial impotence! I can't seem to just grab something and move it. Every basic edit is like a puzzby JustinB - Café LA Re: Loud G5? - 18 years agoI recently upgraded to a G5 dual 2.3 from a G4 MDD. The G5 is so much quieter, it's really like night and day. Your G5 should not be that loud. As MH suggested above, make sure you have the latest firmware installed. I know there were some issues with the earlier G5s where the fans would ramp up w/o need. I'd imagine that would be the easiest way to track the crack! "When the Apple touchscreens arrive, plotting these could be a lot of fun." hahaha.by JustinB - Café LA re: HD footage -- which route to take? - 18 years agoFrom what I understand, DVC Pro HD can demand up to 14 MB per second. It's 4:2:2, and at 720p, the actual captured frame is 970x720 (it displays at 1280x720.) I've been storing the DVC Pro HD captures on a RAID, simply because we can. But I believe it could be captured fine to a good internal HDD. I'd ask around a bit more before going that route though. I do see Chin-Ho Lee's point though. It wby JustinB - Café LA re: HD footage -- which route to take? - 18 years agoDVCPRO HD and basic DV are obviously closely related. DVCPRO HD's data rate varies, and can be as high as 14Mb per sec. You'll be able to capture from the DVCPRO HD deck to DV 25 over FireWire. Remember, the key thing here is that you just dealing with differing versions of DV, so the HD/SD shouldn't be that scary.by JustinB - Café LA re: HD footage -- which route to take? - 18 years agoThe Varicam footage is compressed. It's DVCPRO HD. You can capture it via FireWire from a DVCPRO HD deck, like the Panasonic 1200a w/ FW option. But assuming you can't have the HD deck around while offlining, you'll probably want to go to DV w/ matching TC. Also, when you rent the HD deck for online, you'll want a way to see the footage in HD. Maybe you could rent an HD monitor too.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Reasons to switch from Avid to FCP? - 18 years agoPro: One great advantage of FCP in the educational arena is that it is far more likely that the students will be able to afford FCP (or FCE) systems of their own. That may not happen until graduation, but they will already be well versed with the application. Another advantage of FCP I find is that many directors, producers, etc., have their own FCP system. This makes it very to collaborate andby JustinB - Café LA Re: Ahhh, A Codec Moment - 18 years ago<<I seem to remember that 8.5GB DVDs won't play on all players. Is that true?>> That's what I hear. I have an 8.5 drive but haven't tested any DVDs of that size yet. I wonder if it would be OK to make an 8.5 DVD to a hard drive and then have it professionally replicated?by JustinB - Café LA Re: reference signal from DSR-11? - 18 years agoIt might be possible, but if you already own a Beta deck, why not buy one of the affordable SD cards from Blackmagic? Then get a basic black burst generator off eBay or the like. I agree. Digital video, in that sense, works in the opposite way than actual film does. You'll have more success from a post-push than from a post-pull. At work we use Kona SD and Kona 2s and they seem to work well. And their phone support has been absolutely top notch for us. However, Blackmagic does offer many cheaper options. They generally cost a tad more, but it's worth it in the long run. Especially if you are doing video editing. That's just my opinion though. The most important thing for the G5 is that it's SATA.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Dos on My screen - 18 years agoMac OS X is based on MS-DOS? Ahhhhhhhh!!!!! Yeah that sounds almost like a "kernel panic." Is your system otherwise stable? For example, when I use iDVD, I typically choose the most basic theme, which is from version 4. It basically just adds a semi-translucent lower third of black. I'd love to be able to get rid of that and have a truly "plain" theme. Probably requires some messing with the package contents I imagine.by JustinB - Café LA Re: FCP>iDVD troubles...still - 18 years agoI've had really good luck with iDVD5 so far. <<By the way, you don't need to use the themes at all, you can delete them and put in any picture/music/movie you want.>> How does that work exactly? Do you have to kill all the theme files?by JustinB - Café LA Re: DVD media brand of your preference - 18 years agoMaxell and TDK are good. I'd suggest getting a printer that does optical media.
