Re: Inverting a black and white clip.. - 17 years agoHere's how I was able to do it. Place a clip of black on V3, your moving matte on V2 and a clip of white on V1. Select the black clip and choose Travel Matte - Luma from the Composite mode menu. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Fonts in FCP5 - 17 years agoThere's no industry standard, that's for sure. New fonts are being created all the time for TV and film. The problem is most likely the conversion. One of FCPs few weak points is how touchy they are with fonts. Some converted (to TrueType) fonts will work, and others won't. I'm not sure why. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: New video tutorial by Shane Ross up at Creative Cow - 17 years agoI feel ripped off! I watched that whole tutorial and it totally wasn't what I expected. I thought the "Ken Burns" effect was the technique of turning a 2 hour documentary into a 16 hour documentary. Where's that tutorial, eh Shane? Hmm? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP vs. Avid Glossary - 17 years agoRipple delete is called, "extract" in Avid. Highlighting the clip is unecessary an can only be done in "segment mode" in an avid. You'll probably work outside of segment mode most often. In those cases, place the playhead on the clip anywhere, making sure that the correct tracks are active in the sequence, hit T to "mark clip" and X to "extract". There'by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Ongoing DVC-PRO issues - 17 years agoHmm, interesting. I hadn't heard that before. Then maybe dmings long-term solution would be to upgrade to one of the newer DVC Pro decks. Perhaps the FW board in the newer models is more rock-solid. Personally I love the AJ-SD93. It's an awesome little deck. I wish I could afford it at home. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Ongoing DVC-PRO issues - 17 years agoI use the D230 with FCP 4.5, but I also have an FCP 5 system that uses the AJ-SD93 with no problems. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Ongoing DVC-PRO issues - 17 years agoI use the AJ-D230H myself without any problems for the past 3 years or so. All the Panasonic decks I've used with the FW option tend to work very easily with FCP. The problem you are having is most likely with the FW option board. Have you taken the deck in for service? I suspect that if the FW option board is replaced, your deck will work fine again. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Landscape - 17 years agoYeah, fire the cameraman and shoot it again. :-) This should serve as a prime example to producers all over the world that not everything can be "fixed in post". Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Fan Trailers - 17 years agoOh yeah Ben. It's a whole sub-culture online. Look it up on Wikipedia under "re-cut trailers". There you'll find links to most of the best of these including a sub-sub-culture of Brokeback Mountain trailers using different films (my friend edited a hillarious Brokeback trailer using the He-man cartoon and the original Brokeback trailer audio). Among the best of the fake trailers aby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: I know this is an easy fix, but... - 18 years agoThere is an advanced button in 4.5. I'm still using 4.5. Here, I'll take you through it step by step. Go to Audio/Video Settings in the FCP menu. Click on the Capture Presets tab. Find the preset with the checkmark next to it; that's your default preset. Double click to edit. (BTW, if the preset is locked, FCP will create a copy and allow you to edit that. You can rename it if you want.)by Andy Neil - Café LA Re: splitting synchd audio and video - 18 years ago<<I actually prefer breaking video and audio links the minute I get the clips into the timeline>> Me too! (scream away Nick and Jude). I work with sequence linking off. I can't stand having them linked together in the timeline. Most times I need to move/adjust the audio not the video or the video not the audio. The times that I need to move both together...well, the option buttonby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: repair disk permisions?? - 18 years agoI believe that repairing permissions only works for the system drive. Not external drives or secondary drives. I might be wrong about that but I seem to remember seeing that somewhere. As for maintaining a healthy mac, there are a bunch of janitorial programs out there that are either free or available for a small donation that are designed to run the periodic clean up programs on a mac. I'veby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Audio keyframe fade too short? - 18 years agoIt's funny that you'd say that a linear fade is "seemingly more natural" when exactly the opposite is true. A natural fade would be a human being's hand on a fader who slowly pulls it down. But humans don't pull fades at exactly the same velocity through the course of the fade. A computer has a hard time trying to simulate this. In fact, the exact linear fade of a computer has a verby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: freelancing with desktop/laptop - 18 years agoPlus you'd have the added bonus of not having to deal with the annoying small keyboards on portable computers. For editing I need a mouse/stylus and a full-sized keyboard, or I'm slowed to a crawl. Hate that. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: What are your favorite Audio Filters? - 18 years agoaudio tools are more expansive and work better than the audio tools in FCP. I would do your audio in STP, but use the FCP to STP workflow. I don't know that I would necessarily apply any particular filter over the entire documentary unless there were issues that were consistant throughout. You should really look at it on a scene by scene basis. Comp/Limiters are great sometimes but they do deby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Subtitles from FCP to AVID - 18 years agoMaybe exporting out of FCP using the Animation codec to preserve the title tracks transparency? andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: THIS GROUP ROCKS - 18 years agoTry trashing your preferences....oh, oops, you didn't have a question. Sorry, that's my answer for everything... :-) Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: good FCP option - 18 years agoMac's are not upgradeable??? Your PC friend wasn't a smarmy looking fellow with glasses and big ears who answers to "Gates" was he? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: really slow deck control. - 18 years agoYou didn't mention what deck you're using or what cable you're using for deck control. hard drives have no bearing on deck control. If you're using FW for deck control, then it's probably just the FW (they are very laggy when it comes to deck control). If it's 422 cable, then maybe there is something else wrong. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Final Cut won't retain its rendered files HELP! - 18 years agoyeah, 3 projects dedicated to one sequence doesn't really make sense to me. FCP creates project folders that it places in the capture scratch and render folders. With three projects, you may just be confusing FCP on where it's supposed to look for rendered files. I would look hard at consolidating into one project. The reason you have bins is so you can organize a large project into managableby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Glow Effect / Transition? - 18 years agoBCC's cartooner plugin has a glow preset. Magic Bullet and Natress' Film Effects can do a white diffussion (not sure that's what you're looking for). Motion has a glow filter if you've got Motion. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: I know this is an easy fix, but... - 18 years agoThat's not what I meant. I meant that I am assuming that the speakers are connected to your computer and you are attempting to monitor sound that has first passed through the firewire into your computer. I monitor sound by connecting my speakers to the deck, not the computer. Judging by the way you phrased your question I expect the speakers are connected to your computer. Did my suggestion wby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP 5.0.1 Crash Issues - 18 years agoWhat codec are the quicktime files? Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Starting up a new TV station!? - 18 years agoHow limited is the budget? News and Master Control switchers cost a pretty penny all by themselves, even used. Setting up a TV station is not something you can do with a couple of XL-1s and FCP with firewire drives. It's a major engineering task. There are companies that do exactly what you are asking. In San Diego there's a company called TV Magic which can create scaleable production faciliby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: I know this is an easy fix, but... - 18 years agoAssuming that you are using the computer's speakers to listen to your audio as it comes in through the firewire... Edit your Capture setting. Select the Advanced button by the quicktime audio settings. From the speaker drop down select ON. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: Final Cut won't retain its rendered files HELP! - 18 years agoDid you copy and paste your clips from one project into the others?? I'm not exactly sure why you have 3 project files dedicated to a single project. Also, I would try Derek's suggestion. After rendering and saving, close the projects and FCP and open it tomorrow. If the render bar still appears, then you have proven that the problem is NOT related to FCP; at least not directly. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: HiDef - 18 years ago<<Is there anything that will cause a problem?>> Not having FCP 4.5 or higher will be a problem since you need FCP HD to injest and work with HD. Presumably you at least have that. <<Can we work with it normally or do we need the HiDef card?>> You have to make a decision to work in either HD or DV. Since it sounds like most of your video is in DV, I'd suggest that. Yby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: weird blur title - 18 years agoAre you editing in DV format? DV is never very good with text. It has problems with small font sizes and thin font sizes. It sounds to me like you have a font that just isn't going to work. I would switch to a different font altogether; one that isn't too thin. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: FCP freezes capturing to external HD - 18 years agoYour drive is Windows formatted. You need to reformat to the Mac OS. You can do this through the Disk Utility. It's pretty self-explanatory. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA Re: digitize xdcam - 18 years agoYeah, but it's a brand new app. Support will come for the different flavors of XDCam HD as well as SD eventually. In fact, it wasn't mentioned whether the XDCam footage in question was SD or HD. Andyby Andy Neil - Café LA |
