Re: Any 3D Post Experts Out There? - 14 years agoHi Mike: Will do, thanks for the tip. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Any 3D Post Experts Out There? - 14 years agoHi all: I am researching a story for HD Video Pro Magazine of micro budget 3D production. Any of you have any experience in posting 3D projects? If so, please contact me off line, I would like to hear about your experience with 3D. I am trying to learn more about standardization of 3D workflows with FCS, challenges you had in monitoring, convergence enahncement, etc. Dan Brockett Bby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox shootout? - 14 years agoAndrew, if you have a Tiger-running MBP, keep it at Tiger, don't throw away your Duel functionality by "upgrading" the OS. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox shootout? - 14 years agoFair enough Shane, but just to clarify, I never put down Matrox products. I did put down Matrox as a professional company that in the past put a lot of pros in terrible positions by their non-response to a bad situation. Companies that are quality take care of their customers regardless of the situations that other companies put them in, I can name numerous companies who have. Like Joe, I was perby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox shootout? - 14 years agoShane: I think your assessment of where the fault was on the Matrox debacle of the past is subjective and I recall it differently than you do. Let's just agree to disagree. I have had two other experiences in the past two years with the MXO that didn't change my mind about Matrox customer support, it is great that you have had a different experience. As far as libel, the other companies (Gby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: AJA/Blackmagic/Matrox shootout? - 14 years agoJust buy a Kona 3 and be done with it. The best, ask most of the pros who hang out here. Sorry, I am totally biased from years past. BM makes some okay products, I produced an animated series with half a dozen animator workstations that all used BM cards to output. Support was not as good as Aja, although I have heard that they have improved it. Not sure about today, but at the time, they useby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Wireless audio - 14 years agoThe Lectro 187 Series is a discontinued technology that utilizes the VHF spectrum, rather than the more popular UHF band that most wireless mic systems use today. That said, Lectrosonics are the best quality wireless mics available in their price range, the build quality and signal strength are superb. If you have had good luck with your existing 187, that means that you must probably work in areby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Editing on a Mac Book Pro - 14 years agoYou guys are convincing me to NOT update my G5 tower. Perhaps a 17" MBP would be a better way to go? Could keep the G5 with the Kona just for outputs but actually do the work on the MBP? Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: What's the best place in LA to learn - 14 years agoIf you really want to learn camera work, your best bet is to forget about school and classes and work on actual high-end shoots with professional DPs. You would begin as a production assistant and hopefully would work your way up to 2nd, then 1st AC. There is no book or class substitute for working on a real set with pros. The cameras used in high end production in LA bear little resemblanceby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Why I would want to shoot in a different frame rate? - 14 years agoCasey: I shot with the Z1U before the HVX200 came out. It was the first reliable, affordable HDV camera available. I shot a lot with it, like 20 or 30 projects in one year. Here is the deal with the Z1U. Don't use Sony's lame Cine mode, it is a total hack that uses an inconsistent cadence. For this reason, it doesn't look like 24p, it looks weird. Think of the Z1U ONLY as a 60i camera, becauseby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Need some editor/post processing advice - 14 years agoRelax guys, the scene takes place in a white void, hence the white cyc. I would never use anything but green or blue for keying. The only compositing will be a globe that appears over the actors heads and a screen that pops up in a clean portion of the plate, no overlap with talent anywhere. I believe that we are going to shoot 1080 24pA with the 170. It will be up to the editor or to me to tby Dan Brockett - Café LA Need some editor/post processing advice - 14 years agoHi all: I am being hired to DP a small project that will shown at a global warming initiative meeting. The company hired to perform the compositing and graphics for the project have sent specs on what they will require for delivery of the circle take selects for them to do their thing. It involves a digital globe and digital sign board with video imagery on it. I am with him, hire a designer, the difference in the end result will justify the cost. Motion graphics are one thing that you just can't fake, you either know what you are doing, have a great eye, design skills and probably a degree in fine arts or yoby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: "my book" westerndigital externaldrive - 14 years agoI have a huge stack of these drives that use only for archiving. I too have experienced the exact same symptoms. 1. Try the reset button on the back 2. These drives seem finicky about how they are turned on and off. Since they don't have a power switch, plug them in first, THEN connect the FW cable to your computer (carefully). Be careful that you never hot plug them with the FW plug backwarby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: FCP 6.0.5 suddenly demands a serial number! - 14 years agoContact Apple. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Seeking four PAs for dance film shoot in Los Angeles - 14 years agoHi all: We had a tremendous response on our request for PAs for this project, the producers have hired their choices so no need to send any further applicants. Thanks so much, Dan Brockettby Dan Brockett - Jobs Re: Has anyone used Ferguson Hill speakers? - 14 years agoA pair of these are less than U.S. $600.00 I had my producing partner buy a pair and they are not bad, pretty accurate with a neutral sounding environment but you really will eventually have to lay out the cash for the matching subwoofer. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Seeking four PAs for dance film shoot in Los Angeles - 14 years agoHi all: We are seeking four PAs for an ultra low budget dance film that shoots on Sunday, October 11th in Los Angeles. This project is strictly a self-funded labor of love with no sponsorship, underwriting or grants so all of the crew hired so far are working for a fraction of their normal day rate. Non union obviously, we will feed the crew well and you will get a copy of the finished video oby Dan Brockett - Jobs Re: Has anyone used Ferguson Hill speakers? - 14 years agoTo piggyback on what Graeme says, I totally agree. You should always have a pair of Yamaha NS10s or Auratones or even the cheap speakers on a video monitor or TV to do a reality check on what it will sound like on a low quality system. But if all you use to mix your audio on is a low end system, you may be in for a nasty surprise when someone plays your program back on a decent quality system.by Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Has anyone used Ferguson Hill speakers? - 14 years agoHi Steve: The first thing to do is to avoid buying any PC speakers. All video is edited on a computer these days and all sound is mixed on computers but that has nothing to with wanting to put a pair of cute little speakers next to your computer. The purpose of audio monitors for mixing sound is to present that sound to you in an unbiased way with as little "coloration" or distorby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Has anyone used Ferguson Hill speakers? - 14 years agoHate to say it but all of these are style over substance PC speakers. Noah definitely has it right, they look cool, sound fine for playing iTunes but for mixing edited projects or any semblance of accuracy, not really going to cut it. I have never produced this type of show, but for other work flows I have produced with, yes, FCP is better at certain things and AVID is definitely better at certain things like high volume shared workflow via Unity. I may be going into post on a tv series at the end of the year, it will be a tough decision on which tool to use, FCP or AVID. I am a big fby Dan Brockett - Café LA Ellen Show Post Workflow - 14 years agoInteresting article about how The Ellen show went from AVID to FCP, then back to AVID. For those of you who have worked in this type of workflow, does AVID have it better with UNITY, etc.? Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: outputting FCP timecode to Betacam SP - 14 years agoMark: What model of deck is this? When you say that this deck is used with a camera, is it a BVW50 or some kind of dockable? Or is it a real deck? Model number would be good. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Rihanna's Disturbia music video - 14 years agoGood suggestion Derek. I wish that more producers would let us do this, especially when they want a specific look or feel to a creative project. Believe it or not, testing used to be standard back in the days of film. Snip test to check the gate, wardrobe tests, special effects tests, set tests. Boy do I miss those days. These days, it is, "we don't have the budget" yet producers and clby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: Field Audio - 14 years agoMy H4N fixes most or all of the issues that you H4 owners are going through. For $349.00, it has better audio quality and specs than even the Sony F23/35/RED One or any other camcorder I have ever used. Really kind of a crime that you can pay over $100k for a camera with crap sound. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: SUPER OT: DISNEY BUYS MARVEL for 4 Billion $$$... - 14 years agoI have worked for both Disney and Marvel. I can't think of two more disparate corporate cultures. After working on about three or four of the Marvel films and working on the Chicken Little Blu Ray, I don't predict good things out of this for Marvel fans. Danby Dan Brockett - Café LA Re: OT: HD DVD comes back... - 14 years agoAll of the major studios have trimmed the staff in their home entertainment departments by 30 to 80% in the past year. Compared to DVD, Blu Ray is a flop, it always has been and always will be. I have worked on half a dozen Blu Ray titles and the sales in general on all of the Blu Ray titles has been a disappointment to the studios.
