 lafcpug meetings are sponsored by

Febuary 25, 2009

Join us as we welcome the Dan Montgomery of Imagine Products who will show off ProxyMill, the P2 converter and ShotPut, the automated P2 offloader. Plus editor Norman Hollyn, author of the brand new book "The Lean Forward Moment" returns to lafcpug to speak on the craft of editing. Plus the FCP Tip/Trick of the month. Also Editor Stephen Kanter has developed an interesting workflow in Final Cut Studio that emulates Avid Unity style project sharing. You GOT to see this. Plus show and tells, Stump the Gurus, and of course, World Famous Raffle. And food!! Maybe!

Agenda (Subject to change)

6:45- 7:15PM - Stump the Gurus
Join FCP Gurus Andrew Balis, Stephen Kanter, Shane Ross and Philip Hodgetts as they will attempt to answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems concerning FCS. If they can't solve your problem or answer your question, then you go home with a problem, but you still got out of the house, so that's not a bad thing.

7:25PM - 7:35PM - FCP Tip/Trick O' the Month - TBA

7:40PM - 8:05PM - ProxyMill and ShotPut Pro- Dan Montgomery
Imagine Product's Dan Montgomery escapes the winter in Indiana to fly to SoCal and show off the must have applications, ProxyMill and ShotPut. ProxyMill is an automated video compression application that creates low resolution, preview quality QuickTime movies from Panasonic P2 (MXF) HD Media. ShotPut is a do it all offloader of any media type including P2, AVCHD, SxS, RED ONE, and others.

8:10PM - 8:35PM - Project Sharing with Final Cut Pro - Stephen Kanter
Final Cut Studio Master Trainer and FCP for Avid Editors guru Stephen Kanter presents a potentially revolutionary new workflow that will allow Avid Unity-style project sharing with Final Cut Pro. After years of training and consulting onsite for clients at NBC/Universal, Warner Bros., ABC, CBS, FOX, and Reelz Channel, on shows like Ellen, In Plain Sight and Access Hollywood, Stephen has responded to oft-repeated request for project sharing with a workflow that will mimic, in almost every important respect, the user experience of sharing projects on Unity, a workflow he calls Final Cut Synergy.  With the utilization of existing Apple systems and software, and a simple paradigm shift, multiple editors on Xsan can collaborate using the same kind of auto-updating project-sharing techniques that once were exclusive to Unity.  Recently presented at two overbooked events at the Editor’s Guild, Stephen will demonstrate the process to his toughest audience, LAFCPUG members.

8:35PM - 9:00PM - Break
In the lobby will be HDDisk showing off their storage solutions. Also Veescope Live will be in lobby. Also lafcpug meeting sponsor MelroseMac will be in lobby answering all your questions and hopefully showing off new toys. And maybe Spanish restaurant Tinto Tapas Espana will be at the theater making and selling yummy paella and tapas for a very cheap price. And Sangria too.

The break is a chance to hang out and meet and greet and get your problems solved and who knows, get a job. Snacks and Beer and Wine will be on sale in the lobby. Proceeds go to the Gallery Theater.

9:00PM - 9:30PM - The Lean Forward Moment - Norman Hollyn
Hey, lets talk a little on the craft of editing, shall we?
Norman Hollyn is a long-time film, television and music editor (HEATHERS, THE COTTON CLUB, SOPHIE’S CHOICE, Oliver Stone’s WILD PALMS), and is Associate Professor and Head of the Editing Track at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. He has taught worldwide and has spoken at conferences in China, Finland and Paris, as well as for major corporations such as Dreamworks, Pixar and the Philadelphia Inquirer. He is an author of nearly 100 articles and his book, THE FILM EDITING ROOM HANDBOOK, has been internationally translated. His new book, "The Lean Forward Moment", is just out from Peachpit Press/Pearson.

9:30PM - 9:45PM - Brazzle Dazzle Effects, Behind Disney's Movie Magic - Show and Tell - Les Perkins.
Les Perkins will present excerpts from his documentary BRAZZLE DAZZLE EFFECTS, BEHIND DISNEY'S MOVIE MAGIC. You'll get a glimpse of how Disney classics combined live-action with animation through their unique sodium-vapor process - the forerunner of green screen. Les produced and edited this bonus feature for Disney's upcoming DVD release of Pete's Dragon.

9:45PM - 9:55PM - "Russell Fish: The Sausage and Eggs Incident - Show and Tell - Christopher Hart and Terence Heuston
LAFCPUG enthusiast Chris Hart will show a short film he edited for actor/director Terence Heuston. Russell Fish: The Sausage and Eggs Incident is 7 1/2 minutes long and was edited in FCP & AE. The film was shot in 3 days in Fresno on an HVX200. Most of the show & tell time will be taken up by the movie, but Terence and Chris will welcome your comments after the meeting, perhaps over pizza...?
