7:25PM - 7:50PM - Leaping Brain Lab’s “MOD Machine” - Josh Mellicker

Hollywood DI superstars, Neil Smith and Andrew Balis will be taking you through the new interface, project settings, conform and color options all in a sparkling demonstration full of insight and practical suggestions. As well as taking you through the features of Resolve 9, Neil and Andrew will be demonstrating the new Apple Retina Display MacBook Pro in action. The killer combination of Apple Retina Display MBP and Resolve 9 is an integral part of Hollywood DI's 'Dailies In A Box' solution for editors and DITs. This portable on-set and near-set station from Hollywood DI will be on display in the lobby area.

Neil W. Smith | Managing Director and DI Supervisor
Neil Smith is founder and owner of Hollywood DI. After a successful 25 year career in the computer industry, the last ten with Microsoft Corporation, Neil returned to school. He spent 4 years at USC graduating with honors. It was at USC that he also attended film-school classes and became involved in film production and editing. During this time he began to comprehend the major impact that the ‘digital revolution’ was going to have on the movie industry. Hollywood was going digital and with his high-tech background he saw an opportunity to bring his expertise and knowledge of complex IT systems to the data driven world of modern digital filmmaking and file-based workflows.
About Andrew Balis
Andrew Balis | Colorist & Online Editor
Andrew Balis is a colorist and online editor with projects spanning from narrative feature films to documentaries. He has been deeply involved in consulting and training industry professionals in editorial and color correction systems, color theory and new emerging technologies and editorial workflows. Andrew works as a colorist at Hollywood DI consulting closely with cinematographers, directors and producers to help realize their vision and shape the look of their projects. As a longtime principle instructor at Moviola Digital Arts Institute, he has instructed colorists, editors and assistants from Paramount to ABC/Disney, Fox, E, Comcast, Matchframe, Fotokem, Trailer Park, Cimarron Group, MTV to virtually every post production facility in the Los Angeles area.

9:00PM - 9:30PM - SOUND: The Final Frontier? Vickie Sampson
Sound is probably the only part of the filmmaking process that is still relegated to a hazy Netherlands. No one wants to talk about it, (until they HAVE to!) or think about it on the set (too many other things to do, like lighting!) or deal with it until the very end. But think about a world in which sound is given the same (if not more) importance as the visual image. On the day of a shoot, I know everything is pretty crazy. But that day lives on both as a visual image and as a sound memory. You, as picture editors, live with those images and those sounds for the rest of the life of the film. In the editing room, sound becomes critically important. It is where the story lives, it is the actual, live performances captured on “the day.” No ADR will usually ever live up to what is done live and in the moment (though that is certainly our intent!) ADR is not ideal. It is a “fix it” tool. A necessary evil. Okay, sometimes it’s an addition, some exposition, that adds something that wasn’t there before. Production sound and how it gets recorded either makes your film sound professional or amateurish. Recording production sound properly is of utmost importance.
What I would like to cover in these 30 minutes:
• How sound and picture editors interface and communicate with each other.
• What we sound editors need in order to do our work. (Properly formatted quicktimes and OMFs with academy leaders and head and tail pops, burned in timecode and footage references and the proper frame rate)
• If possible, try and edit with separate mics if that’s possible.
• Turn over to us a copy of the lined script, sound reports, list of cast etc.
I will show some examples of why using a sound editor is important, even for “low budget” projects.
About Vickie Sampson
Victoria Rose Sampson has been a Feature Film Sound Editor since 1973. In addition to sound editing full time she pursues her producing, writing, directing and film editing career with her independently financed short films and commercials. Her latest directing job was a PSA for Women in Film for the Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation and is currently airing on national TV. Shot in 35mm film by DP Nancy Schreiber.
Her short film “Her Need for Speed” a two minute film shot in 35mm by acclaimed cinematographer Nancy Schreiber, ASC, was shot for a commercial contest sponsored by Harley-Davidson. “Her Need for Speed” was the Grand Prize winner!
With her co-producing partner, Chantal Marie, they formed Garden Gate Films in 2009 to write, direct and produce commercials, PSAs, short films and feature films. They have won monetary prizes for their commercials for Hershey’s, Almay, HP Photosmart, and Samsung products from Current TV.
In 2000, with co-producer Chantal Marie, Victoria produced, wrote, directed and edited “Click Three Times” (30 minutes, 35mm) starring Emmy Award winner Isabel Sanford (The Jeffersons), “CLICK” won many awards and still gets invited to play in film festivals. Not bad for an 11 year old film! Its latest screening was at Women In Film Shorts Festival in March 2011.
Ms. Sampson is a graduate of the AFI’s acclaimed Directing Workshop for Women. She also guest lectures about sound aesthetics at AFI, UCLA and USC. She is a member of POWERUP, (Professional Women in Entertainment Reaching UP), and The Alliance of Women Directors where she serves on its Board of Directors.
She teaches post-production sound at Video Symphony in Burbank and has taught classes at USC, AFI and UCLA on the value of sound’s contribution to story.
She is a member of the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) the Motion Picture Editors Guild, Local 700 of the IATSE and is a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, where she serves on the Sound Branch Executive Committee.

Les Perkins has been coming to LAFCPUG for 10 years, since he bought his first FCP 3 system. He's a producer/editor with more than 70 awards for creating short- and long-form, scripted and unscripted projects for major studios and TV networks, such as Discovery Channel, PBS, CBS, NBC, and especially Disney. He created bonus content for dozens of DVDs and Blu-rays for Disney classics such as Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins and Pete's Dragon. Tonight he's showing two, recent promos for new clients that are quite a departure from his Disney work.
