Join us Wednesday Oct 28 for the next lacpug Meet.

It will be HORROR NIGHT!
Just in time for Halloween, we devote most of the evening to Horror. As in Cutting Horror movies, and practical and visual effects, CGI and Sound design in Horror movies.

Editor Ed Marx will take us through his workflow and give us tips on what he has learned over the years cutting Horror movies.

Editor Monica Daniel will show off Monster ToolKit from Rampant Design

Also we welcome director David Rountree. who will show us clips from his recent festival favorite and award winning horror film, CUT and discuss the practical and visual FX that went into this movie.

6:45- 7:15PM - Stump the Gurus
Join Gurus
Michael Kammes, Philip Hodgetts and TBD as they will attempt to answer all of your questions and solve all of your problems concerning FCS and FCPX, Avid, Premiere Pro and anything else you can think of. If they can't solve your problem or answer your question, then you go home with a problem, but you still got out of the house, so that's not a bad thing.

7:15PM - 7:25PM - The Most Memorable Monster Movie Moments Ever - Larry Travis
Larry Travis cut together a collection of the most memorable monster movie scenes ever for the Alex Film Society and will show it to us tonight.

7:30PM -8:10PM - Practical effects, visual effects (including CGI), and audio/sound design of a Horror movie - David Rountree
Director David Rountree. will show us clips from his recent festival favorite and award winning horror film, CUT and discuss the practical and visual FX and sound design that went into this movie.

About David Rountree
David Rountree is president and founder of Psycho Rock Productions, which has produced five feature films, four of which were directed by David. His latest two films, 108 Stitches and CUT! both saw theatrical releases in 2014 and 2015 respectively. He is listed in the Top 10 of Up-and-Coming Hollywood Directors Under 40 on the industry standard website IMDb.com with a Star Meter ranking as high as 2053.

108 Stitches, which opened in theaters September 12, 2014 is a romantic baseball comedy in the spirit of Animal House and Bull Durham. The story follows the Orem Owlz, a Single A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and stars Golden Globe winner Bruce Davison, Kate Vernon, Larry Thomas (Seinfeld’s “Soup Nazi”), and Last Comic Standing winners Josh Blue and Dat Phan. Rountree was also just featured on the front page of The Hollywood Reporter for the movie.
CUT!, a psychological horror/thriller, which opened in theaters on Friday the 13th of February, won Best Film at the Independent Film and Television Festival. Rountree also won for Best Director and produced winners in the Best Leading Actor and Overall Sound categories and was named by MovieRankings.com as one of the TOP 5 HORROR Movies of the year.
In addition to his films, Rountree has directed numerous national commercials for brands such as Sprite, Sauza Tequila, American Cancer Society, Netflix, Yamaha, Skol Beer, and Dish Network. He was also a top 5 finalist for his commercial “Winner Take All” for the Dorito Superbowl Commercial Challenge.

8:15PM - 8:30PM - Rampant Design Monster ToolKit- Monica Daniel
In keeping with tonights theme Horror, editor Monica Daniel will show off Monster ToolKit from Rampant Design

She has worked for several television networks in addition to independent features that have been released by Miramax, Lionsgate and Anchor Bay Entertainment. She enjoys sharing her knowledge by giving presentations about her work, as well as Producing/Co-Hosting an industry podcast called Going Postal Show and promoting health in post production through Fitness in Post. This is your chance to ask questions. No questions? Then talk to each other. The break is a chance to hang out and meet and greet and get your problems solved and who knows, get a job. You never know who you are going to meet at lacpug Snacks and Beer and Wine will be on sale in the lobby. Proceeds go to the Gallery Theater.

9:00PM - 9:40PM - Horror editing…just like regular editing, only different - Ed Marx and Dominic Franklin
Editor Ed Marx and first time director Dominic Franklin will discuss editing horror movies using the movie CHURCH directed by Franklin.

About Ed Marx
Ed Marx has been in the business over 40 years.  Following a successful career doing commercials in Chicago, Ed migrated to LA in 1992.  He transitioned primarily to features and has worked in all genres from restoration (Orson Welles’ It’s All True), comedy (Swimming with Sharks) to Horror (The Jeepers Creepers and Hatchet franchises).  In all, he has cut over 50 features, 45 TV episodes, and dozens of movie trailers and promos.  He has been blessed to work with director horror legends like Victor Salva, Adam Green, Tom Holland, BJ McDonnell, and Padraig Reynolds.  For this presentation, Ed will feature first time director, Dominic Franklin, with scenes from Church.

Enter through the gate on Hollywood Blvd just West of Berendo. The theater is at the top of the hill, adjacent to the art gallery.

From US 101 (heading South),
take the Hollywood Boulevard exit.
Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto Hollywood Boulevard.
Turn right into the entrance to Barnsdall Art Park at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard. (you will only see a parking lot. Drive to top of hill to find the Gallery Theater)
The Gallery Theater is in the center of the park.

From US 101 (heading North),
take the Vermont Avenue exit.
Turn right at the end of the exit ramp onto Vermont Avenue.
Turn left onto Hollywood Boulevard.
Turn left into the entrance to Barnsdall Art Park at 4800 Hollywood Boulevard. (you will only see a parking lot. Drive to top of hill to find the Gallery Theater)
The Gallery Theater is in the center of the park.

Metro Red Line
Yes, Los Angeles has a subway and if possible you ought to use it. Riders are dropped of at Sunset and Vermont, one long block from the Art Park. More info on the Red Line can be found here.

PARKING: Parking is FREE. There is ample parking on top of hill near the Art Park. Parking extends around the perimeter of the Park. NOTE: Please park your car diagonally even though the spaces are not marked that way. What to do if I cant find a place to park?
Park at the Kaiser Hospital Parking lot. Download directions HERE - or...

1. Turn right on Hollywood Blvd
2. Turn right on Vermont Ave
3. Turn right on Sunset Blvd.
4. Turn right into Kaiser Parking Structure
5. Park on rooftop
6. Take elevator down to Level 2
7. Exit at Parking Entrance on Barnsdall Ave.
8. Cross Street to Barnsdall Park
9. Use Stair or elevator to Park
10. Climb stairs and follow signs to Gallery Theatre
11. Cost is $4.00 (I think) And security is provided.

Wheelchair access: Park in the lot next to the Hollyhock house (you will see a handicap parking sign), come into the theatre entrance, and take the elevator down. There will be space in the front of the theatre for wheelchairs.

Before or after the meeting, there is a fine restaurant row on Vermont between Hollywood and Franklin (just around the corner from the park). There are also a number of funky ethic eateries along Hollywood Blvd.
