7:30PM - 8:20PM - The Art and Tech of VR Storytelling involving Parrots, Pirates and Pandemonium - Neil Smith and Matt Celia
VR/360º technology is ushering in a new era of visual storytelling and end-user experiences - everything from VR video games to 360º documentaries to immersive journalism and YouTube spherical commercials. But what about good old fashioned narrative story-telling? Can it be done in VR and if so, what are the challenges and how do you go about it?
Join Neil Smith and Matt Celia as they take you behind the scenes of the creation of an incredible virtual journey aboard a Pirate ship sailing the seven seas in search of hidden treasure and deadly contraband. - Well, a sailing ship moored in San Diego bay transporting a vicious parrot, motley mutineers and sea-sick wenches, anyway. All as part of a short VR story aimed at bringing some humor to the otherwise bleak, horror filled landscape of much current VR content.
Neil and Matt will delve into both the technology behind the VR/360º production as well as the creative process involved in writing, shooting, editing and delivering an entertaining, story-led VR piece. This tale will feature 360Heros rigs with CamMan2 DIT software, along with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects with the Mettle 360 Skybox plugins as well as sound design using Dolby Atmos.
All in all, this will be a captivating and riveting introduction to story-led VR content creation and delivery. Anyone turning up late for the session will be given ten lashes from Michael Horton and forced to walk the plank into the fish pond at the Barnsdall Art Park. It is cold and deep, me hearties! You have been warned.
