Dual Sided DVD Burner/Media question

Dual Sided DVD Burner/Media question
November 22, 2006 03:21PM
Hello,
I have a QuickSilver G4 single 800Mhz desktop and a Dual 2Ghz G5. Both have DVD burners but are outdated. (Pioneer 105 and 106 burners)
I want to replace the internal drives with an internal Dual Sided DVD burners. Here are my questions:
1) Can someone recommend a Brand and Model of burner that will work within these two computers without compatibility issues? (I guess my preferred brand would be Pioneer as that is what is in them now)
2) Which media should I buy? I currently use DVD-R and have been told to stay away from the DVD+R media (at least in the world of Single Sided Media) When I switch to a dual sided burner, what media should I buy then.?

The reason for my purchase is this: I'd like to make backup copies of my purchased, commercial DVD's using the Mac The Ripper Software. So, once I rip the original DVD to my hard drive, I need a way to burn it to a dual sided disk given the side of the ripped file. Does this make sense and are the dual sided DVD's the way to go?

Thanks in Advance,

Chris M.

That's illegal. You will not get a response from the forum. Please don't ask again.

...never ceases to amaze me...the lack of common sense some folks choose to display in a public forum.

We just went through a whole discussion with J., right? It's not that people are deliberately trying to be foolish or break the law. It's that they have a misperception of copyright law as being the work of the devil. When I studied copyright law, one myth the instructor dispelled very early on for our own benefit was "fair use".

This guy asked a valid hardware question. That doesn't mean you have to diss him completely.
A simple "We can't address that question here" would suffice.

Are you asking about dual-layer/double layer burners? There is no such thing as a two sided burner.

it is my rememberance that as of the A06 Pioneer burner mechanism, that it supported DVD-R dual layer burning. As fas as when the Pioneer models went to DVD-+RW for both formats, I am not sure.

Pioneer has been a good unit in my Quicksilver 2002 G4 and my Quad G5. I would personally go with them again. All current A110 units are both - and + dual layer capable in a MAC.

Any dual layer DVD-R media will work (I prefer Ritek or Maxell myself)

Since this is a forum of video professionals we can not comment on ripping commercial DVD content for personal use.

Actually, all that Chris had to do was leave out why exactly he was asking those questions. By including the illegal part, he opens up anybody who responds to the legit portion of the question to legal action.

I wasn't dissing him. But we gotta protect the whole forum. Instances like these could shut down the site completely.

I just don't think we need to be policing the end result of what people are trying to accomplish. How many people coming here are doing porn video? Depending on where you come down on that, it might be illegal??

I just think it's to easy to be "holier than thou" with first time posters, instead of explaining the rules. Don't think if we communicate them, the "entire site is goint to be shut down"

Hey John, I know where you're coming from. But again, I think it's important to protect the community.

If Chris M. had originally simply posted a question about which burners were compatible, then nobody would be at risk for communicating with him. But in his case, he told us what he wanted to do, and it was something illegal.

All he had to do was leave out why he wanted to do it. Once he mentioned it, we can't claim we didn't know, and the postings will back that up, and so it's risky to all of us to try to provide him with information. Like selling a gun to someone who makes it clear he's going to hurt somebody with it.

Well, for one thing, porn is legal. For another, in several years of being a forum member, I've never seen anybody who actually told us s/he was doing porn.

Hell, we get "how to get materials off a DVD" questions all the time. And in those cases, we always at least ask to make sure that the person in question has the right to get materials off a copyrighted DVD. And there are legitimate tasks out there -- for example, when I cut a promo for some musical artists whose management could only provide me with copy-protected DVDs. Legal ends, legal means, no danger to publicizing in a forum.

Maybe Mike Horton has an opinion on this?

Actually we got a whole bunch of Adult filmmakers on the lafcpug roster. This is after-all, LA. As long as the Supreme Court upholds the constitution, post all the porn editing problems you want. Course, I'm not sure what problems are specific to Adult films.

As to our attitude towards "illegal" practices and protecting the site, those of us who are moderators must take the "higher road" and call it when we see it. We make assumptions sometimes and yes we are wrong sometimes and yes the response might come off as "holier than thou," but we are not responding to one person. We are responding to the hundreds of folks who read these threads. I agree that perhaps we should be little less matter of fact with first time posters, but unless you click on the first time posters name you don't know if that poster is a first time poster. Not our job anyway. And it's too much to ask of anyone.

Now, is there really a chance of this site being shut down if we condone illegal practices or look the other way? Doubtful, but then I've always felt a responsibility to play by the rules that govern us. If we don't like those rules then we got this Congress here in the US that we can lobby to change them.

BINGO, Derek.

Easy there, JF... the man literally explained he wanted to engage in Copyright Infringement. It was a hardware question right up until the point where he posted:

Quote

I'd like to make backup copies of my purchased, commercial DVD's using the Mac The Ripper Software.

RED FLAG. There's even a disclaimer on the MacTheRipper website to try to protect the developer's butt:

Quote

Any copyright-infringing activity you choose to perpetrate using this application is illegal, immoral, and beyond our control.

If that's not enough, on installation of this program, you get ANOTHER "affadavit" you have to click "I AGREE" to that states the following:

Quote

By agreeing to the following statement, you, (your computer name) the user of the MacTheRipper application do declare that you are not a member of any law and enforcement agency, the MPAA, or any of their affiliates. You agree to accept responsibility for all of your actions regarding this application. The Author or his associates accept no responsibility for any problems that this application may cause to either you, or your computer. You agree to use at your own risk.

When an app like this is created for ONE PURPOSE, that's the type of reaction you'll get when posting inquiries in public.

This is not an opinion or flaming someone for the sake of flaming someone...it's the law. The law is the law and ignorance of the law is no excuse (boy, how many traffic cops told me that over the years). I personally work for a facility that has to pay for every picture, piece of video, print, audio, artwork, etc that goes into one of our projects or we get sued. We recently did a logo for one of our shows and we got a "Cease & Desist" from a DC Comics Lawyer because our show logo looked too much like the Daily Planet logo from Superman (true story - don't ask).

As for the "holier than thou" thing...I didn't check how many posts he had so had no idea he was new. BTW - porn is legal (for Adults) and has nothing to do with this....but COPYING / RIPPING a copyrighted porn DVD is illegal...period. You a bit confused...and little hostile about this subject, John. Let's take it down a notch, huh?

Peace

- Joey
