Reconecting to files with 6 audio tracks??
May 29, 2007 11:55PM
I am trying to reconnect a sequence to clips that have more audio tracks than the original files. When i do this only the first 2 audio files come in on the timeline even though the clips have all 6 tracks on them. Does any one know what I need to do to get the added 4 audio files to come through to the timeline?

Thanks, Mark

try matchframing the clips from the timeline into the viewer.
do they hen have all 6 tracks?
i got a feeling they might not.
in that case you could do a matchframe back to source (or whatever it;s called): Option Apple F
this will bring up the source file with all six tracks.
you'd then have to edit that back into the timeline.

a bit of a drag actually,
as option apple f will lose the clip's in/out points, and you;d have to mark an in in the viewer,
mark in/outs around your timeline clip and then do the edit

believe it or not i think a 2-stage process would be easiest.
option apple f to bring up the source,
F11 to replace.
f to match frame (now you should get all 6 tracks AND in/outs)
F10 to overwrite.

either way you'll lose all filters and motion fx

there could be some XML solution for this???

I'm thinking there might be another way. The reason Match Frame won't work is because your original master clips didn't have six tracks. So backup your project file and try this: Disconnect the master clip in the Browser by pressing SHIFT-D, and choose "Leave All Files on Disk". Now go to Modify - Clip Settings and change the number of audio tracks. Now reconnect the media. Look at the "Tracks" column of the clips and see if they now read "1V, 6A". If so, then try using Match Frame in the timeline. That might call up all six tracks without losing In-Out points on each clip.

If you only activate audio Source/Destination buttons to do the Replace Edits, you shouldn't lose visual motion and filter effects, but whatever filters and levels on your audio clips would still be gone. You're not trying to muck with your video, right?

"That might call up all six tracks without losing In-Out points on each clip. "

yeah, good idea, well worth a try

true, too.
you'd lose your clip linking, but you cant have everything, it seems.

Thanks for the info.

I have got it to reconnect to the clips with the extra tracks, that is no problem, you do not need to add tracks in the "clip settings" it is just getting them in the timeline. I had thought about the "f" key method but i thought FCP would be able to do this automatically. i did think about the XML but I think I would need to go it and edit it by hand and i could not make sense of the file info.

I am thinking maybe an EDL? It seems simple thing to do, I just need the ins and pouts of all clips and location in the timeline and aply that to the new clips and rebuild the timeline.

Thanks Mark

Yeah, I do not care about audio levels, it is going to Pro Tools for mixing and there is nothing more than some fades on the video so it is pretty simple.

if matchframe brings up the 6 tracks,
and you have a simple timeline as you say,
then f, F10 will be a fast and pain free way to replace the clips.

f, F10
f, F10
f, F10
etc.
you'll be done in not time.

simpler than an edl, i'd say

Thanks!

"I did not know about f10?"

shocking! scandalous!
F10 is the shortcut for an overwrite edit.
just the most basic function of an editor, is all...

"I will check it out!"

and you'll be glad you did smiling smiley

Hi,

I just had a quick look thru the new stuff and found this one.

And I've to say depending on the FCP setup XML is not a got idea, though I haven't tried with FCP6 - maybe they fixed it.
Try the options Nick suggested first.
