Converting very large TIFF files

Hello

My client is a well known photographer and I'm editing a piece for him. He has supplied his photo files as TIFFS and they are very large - between 50 and 200 mb. I'm assuming these are too large to work with. Therefore my questions are:

1 - Do I need to convert them out of TIFFS to work with them?
2 - How do I make these files small enough to work with, but keep them large enough to use them creatively?
3 - And if there is a means to convert them and re-size them is a method to do this conversion as a 'batch conversion" so that I can have all 100 files convert at the same time?

you can automate the resizing in photoshop.

Google or do a search on forums about using stills in FCP

the Photoshop help menu should explain this well enough.

i learnt how to do it in there,
but so long ago, i couldn't explain it now, sorry.

but by using "Actions" in PS, you can record a series or operations,
and then apply them to whole folders of images.

so look up "Actions" in the PS help menu

Whoa! Those file sizes are *way* overkill. You can take down an entire project file if you have enough of those bloaters in your timeline. Yet, if you want to enlarge-- you need some extra data.

How much? Depends. Here's a system for intelligent scanning (or downsampling) I developed to handle this on my own projects.

may I suggest using Apple's built in AUTOMATOR for this -- it's excellent Apple even has a pre-built macro you can download for this on their web site

A FCP guru came up with ideal size to scale pictures to that gives you enough head room to make moves and zooms on the pictures without pixelating

1800 x 1350 x 72 dpi.
