Within FCP, is there a way to tell how many items are in a bin? I also want to confirm that you can only duplicate a bin by copy and pasting it.

Thank you

Open the bin. Shift-H to switch the bin to icon view. It'll tell you at the top many items are in the bin.

All the best,

Tom

I don't know of any way to get a count of the number of items in a bin - possibly a dummy batch recapture? I'm not sure why this would be required though, so not very surprised.

And you can just hit option d to duplicate a bin and its contents. Although AFAIK really you're not making new versions, just new copies of links to the same media.

Oh, there you go - icon view. Hate icon view.

Me too. This is about the only thing it's good for.

All the best,

Nope you can duplicate anything in FCP7 Browser using:

option-d

The option key is labelled "alt"

it could have been Apple D (Command D) and correlate to the other finder commands (Apple C, apple V etc)
but Apple D was given to De-Select All in early versions of FCP.

after a while De-select All was shifted over to Shift Apple A (from memory)
that was also the year they introduced the mappable keyboard,
so i just mapped it back.

Apple D is still clear so if you prefer, you can map Duplicate to that.

icon view can occasionally be cool for looking at clips,
but bins? only for a clip count.

Eleven years of using Final Cut Pro...Icon View is one of those features I've never used. Not even once, on a pro job or a personal project, small or large. Blows the mind.

Jude,

I wanted to make sure I didn't miss a clip when syncing up footage, so I wanted to compare the number of clips in the original bin to the synced one.

for many reasons, (and this seems a legitimate one) i prefer to sync my rushes in a timeline.

other reasons are i just don't trust auto syncing by TC.
if i can do it, i will,
but rather than merging in the browser i will do it in a timeline where i can check the sync by eye before i link picture and sound.

Simple stupid solution: select the bin and select Export->XML. The dialog will tell you the number of items. Then press Cancel. This way you can get the count of clips/items for even more than 1 bin.
