Click HERE to register now Registering Editing Work - 9 years agoWondering if anyone here knows of a way/place to register the creative work one does as an editor, in a similar way to screenwriters being able to register their work at WGA to prove that, as of a certain date, they were the sole writer of that piece of work. Say you created a documentary film out of a pile of footage a client handed you with no script or guidelines whatsoever as to what the fby Jeff Green - Café LA FCP 7 Keyboard Shortcuts in Lion - 12 years agoJust installed FCP 7 in a new 27" quad core iMac running Lion. Program seems to be working fine, but assigning FCP commands to F-keys in Keyboard Layout seems to have no effect. Those keys still operate according to the OS default commands. Anyone know how to override those defaults so I can customize my keys for use in FCP (and in a way that the OS commands can still work when I'm not usby Jeff Green - Café LA FCP 7 & Lion - 12 years agoSeems to be no end of conflicting reports about this, so curious if anyone has direct experience installing the newly re-released FCP 7 (and other FC Studio 3 programs) on a new Mac running Lion -- and if so, did the Install go smoothly -- and is FCP running smoothly? I just picked up a new iMac 27" with an i7 3.4GHz Quad Core, and a Radeon 6970M graphics card, and trying to decide whetheby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Editing with Transcoded 1080p in FCP6 - 12 years agoThanks, Nick. Think it has to do with aspect ratio, but still (since it usually refers to Interlaced) it's strange.by Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Editing with Transcoded 1080p in FCP6 - 12 years agoField dominance is "None"by Jeff Green - Café LA Editing with Transcoded 1080p in FCP6 - 12 years agoI need to edit a documentary that was shot on a Nikon DSLR, and so need to transcode the H.264 files to ProRes to edit with. I?ll be doing the transcoding on the DP?s new top of the line iMac running FCP 7 (and whatever version of Compressor came with that). But I?ll be editing on a G5 dual 2.0, running OS 10.4.11, and FCP 6. I transcoded a couple 23.98 test files last night, using Compressoby Jeff Green - Café LA Chroma Keying in Motion - 15 years agoI'm an FCP editor who's never used Motion. But I need to do so in order to do a bunch of green screen work, as FCP's keyer isn't up to the task with this footage. I followed a tip from Larry Jordan about how to send a clip from FCP to Motion, get a great key, and have it show up back in my FCP timeline. Works great for that one clip. But I have a hundred similar clips in my timeline (drawn frby Jeff Green - Motion Quicktime/FCP compatibility problem - 16 years agoI heard somewhere awhile back that a certain version of Quicktime might pose a problem with FCP 6. If that's so, would love to know the actual facts. I'm currently running FCP 5.1.4, with QT 7.2, on OS 10.4.9 (on a dual 2.0 G5). And that all works great. But I just bought the FC Studio-2 upgrade, and want to install FCP 6. I'm not going to Leopard just now, so my questions are -- beforeby Jeff Green - Café LA EDL's - 16 years agoCan anyone point me to a concise explanation of how to use EDL's in FCP 5. Not for recapturing on another platform, but between different versions of FCP. For instance, say someone has a project he's been cutting on FCP 6 and wants to hand it off to me to continue editing. I can't open his project file with FCP 5. Can he export an EDL that I can use to recreate his sequences? How would Iby Jeff Green - Café LA Missing Firewire Device - 16 years agoJust upgraded my OS to 10.4.9 (from 10.3) -- and upgraded to FCP 5.1.4 from 4.5 This on a G5 dual 2.0 All went well, but when I just fired up FCP I keep getting the message saying it's unable to locate my external firewire device (in this case, a DSR11 DV deck, and therefore can't control the deck, and I can't capture. Nothing else has changed other than the software upgrades. Everythinby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Converting 24p HD to 30fps standard def - 17 years agoI'd already done that, and the result was okay, but definitely degraded, like it was slightly soft focus. I ended up using Nattress Standards Conversion, and even though it took 3 hours to render a 12 minute clip, it worked like a champ. The new NTSC version is crystal clear. I strongly recommend Nattress. Jeffby Jeff Green - Café LA Converting 24p HD to 30fps standard def - 17 years agoI have a DVCPro HD project in a 24p timeline. The edit is done, and I now want to make a 30fps standard def version for use in editing into my reel, which is all DVCam/30fps stuff. I've tried exporting out of FCP, but the results are either blurry, or stuttery, or have random black frames. I've tried exporting to Compressor, but I've never used it and it's not terribly intuitive. I've alsoby Jeff Green - Café LA slo-mo vs. timeline frame rate change - 17 years agoI'm being given some 720p HD footage shot at 30fps and was asked to edit in a 24fps timeline to give it a slightly slower ethereal feeling. But I'm wondering if the visual result of this approach would be any different from what you'd get by using a 30fps timeline and manually slowing down the footage by the appropriate percentage? In other words, would the video look/feel the same in either aby Jeff Green - Café LA Editing PAL in FCP - 17 years agoI'm being sent some PAL footage to edit. I've never used PAL footage before. I'm running FCP 4.5, on a dual 2 G5, OS 10.3.9. 3 questions. Can you edit PAL footage in FCP just by choosing the right capture and sequence settings? When done, can I export it either as PAL or NTSC? And re: the latter, are there serious image anomalies transferring between formats? I don't have a PAL decby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Black levels for broadcast - 17 years agoAbsolutely put the Broadcast Filter on last. Otherwise, once you render, the whites that it brought down will mysteriously be too hot again. But you should still double check it after rendering. Sometimes it needs to be repeated.by Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Black levels for broadcast - 17 years ago<< Yes, all the clip videos on the FCP timeline should just touch zero on the waveform monitors. This will be converted to broadcast levels when the show goes to DigiBeta. >> My monitor was already calibrated. So my question remains -- will this "conversion" to broadcast levels actually increase the black levels (and visual brightness) so the show looks like it used to (aby Jeff Green - Café LA Black levels for broadcast - 17 years agoI've cut a documentary in FCP 4.5 (on a dual 2.0 G5), shot on DVCam. I'm prepping it to take to an online facility to output to Digi-Beta for delivery to PBS, who has licensed the show. Aside from PBS specs in general making my brain melt -- the one item I'm particularly unclear about is black levels. The online facility took a look at my show (which looks great on my NTSC monitor), and tby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Media Manager mysteries - 17 years agoHmm... the "no media" think kind of makes sense, as just before trying the Media Manage, I'd rendered the entire sequence. And if I remember correctly, the last time I successfully rant MM, the sequence was not rendered. But I don't really get it, as the media is of course still on my hard drive. I'll run MacJanitor and Repair Permissions, but really don't want to reinstall FCP untilby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Media Manager mysteries - 17 years agoYeah, the preference trash seemed to do the trick on my old problem. But not this time. I am in "copy" mode. There is no 2nd bar. But if I roll over it, it will display (in text) how much media will be required for the consolidated version (although it's twice as much as is needed). I'd be happy to ignore that and proceed if the 2nd issue didn't rear its head as well, the strange pby Jeff Green - Café LA Media Manager mysteries - 17 years agoLast month I used Media Manager for the first time to copy and consolidate a couple projects to external drives. The first one work fine. Then, later in the day, I tried to do the second one. This time, upon opening Media Manager, I noticed that instead of there being two green media bars (one representing the original media, the 2nd for the smaller amount to be copied), only the top green bby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Media Manager-Copy Project - 17 years ago<<so how do the multiple copies manifest themselves ....that would happen if you had asked MM to delete unused. but you say you didnt.>> They don't manifest (on the drive). I just see (in the progress bar) the same clips coming up a 2nd, 3rd time. Delete Unused is not checked. What seems to be happening is first, MM copes all the clip media in the browser bins, then it attacks theby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Media Manager-Copy Project - 17 years agoNick, The result of the Media Manage is that, at the time I cancelled, maybe 80% of the media has been copied to the new drive. Reason I cancelled was that it seemed there'd be no end, and also seemed to be repeatedly re-copying the same clips. But by cancelling, it never created a new project file. So I then copied my original project, then disconnected my original drive, and opened the projby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Media Manager-Copy Project - 17 years agoI'm in the middle of another long Media-Managed effort and don't want to cancel unless I'm told the settings I used are wrong. That's the question I'm hoping to get answered before abandoning this process and trying a manual approach. Derek, I didn't capture the media, it was given to me on a drive, but it was captured/organized reasonably well. So no, I haven't tried reconnecting on this projby Jeff Green - Café LA Re: Media Manager-Copy Project - 17 years agoThanks. But simply dragging files manually will result in a million unlinked clips and sequences, and the reconnect function always seems to have problems of its own. As to Nick's questions: I'm using F/W 800 drives, not 400. When I cancel, there is a ton of new media on the new drive (maybe 350 out of the 400G). But there is no new project file. If I open the original project file (with thby Jeff Green - Café LA Media Manager-Copy Project - 17 years agoNeed help with what should be a simple Media-Manager procedure on FCP 4.5 (running on a G5 Dual 2.0). All I'm trying to do is create an identical copy of an entire project (clips/media, sequences, music) onto a new drive -- while leaving the original intact on the drive where it lives. I select all in the browser window, open Media Manager. The first strange thing is that is says the amountby Jeff Green - Café LA |
