SATA and the joy of ProMac - 17 years agoWhen two MacPro's turned up at work thismorning i quickly got down to the joy of rigging them up and installing the necessary ram and cards... including a Tempo SATA E4P PCIe card from Sonnet. However as i quicly found out and confirmed on the sonnet website these cards don't currently work in the promacs! In the words of Sonnet: Tempo SATA E4P is currently not compatible with Mac Pro computers.by Josh B - Café LA Re: HDV TO DV TO DVD WORKFLOW - 17 years agoI still don't follow: If you capture the HDV footage at DV res and cuts the project before playing out to DVD the job is done, and he can always do a conform and recapture his HDV footage at full res should he want to master a HDV version in the future. For this project you want to work at DV res. if you capture it at DV Res you save yourself a whole load of time and hassle. And as long asby Josh B - Café LA Re: HDV TO DV TO DVD WORKFLOW - 17 years agosorry i'm a little confused, if your wanting DV res why are you importing it as HDV? why not just capture it at DV res?by Josh B - Café LA Re: HD editing suite - 17 years agoOr save even more money and Get (oh god can't believe im saying this) the Dell monitors... they look fantastic and are a fraction of the price.by Josh B - Café LA Re: HD editing suite - 17 years agoa few things... Im assuming you mean a PCIe fiber card, and on that note i hear of more and more people who have had or are having problems with the xserve raid. id also give the Quatro a miss - the card is aimed at a different market and the X1900 will more than suffice. Also what about critical kit such as PPM's, reference box and a legaliser?by Josh B - Café LA Re: Xserve storage capacity - 17 years agoMy general rule of thum is to always leave a minimum of 15% of your drive space free. You can notice a huge degradation in drive performance if you fill drives up to the brim, and with some SATA Raids etc you can find that your read right speeds drop hugely if you fill the drives beyond about 70%.by Josh B - Café LA Re: Black Slug turning green in timeline - 17 years agoI've had exactly the same problem, weird green screen, with a Kona card installed - trashing the prefs and a quick restart solved the problem - odd but easy to fix!!by Josh B - Café LA Re: Bizzare issue with Audio Levels over Firewire. - 17 years agoWell i got an update from the editor the other day, it seems after checking a mirror of one of the drives he's working on that the QT files on the mirrored Drive are fine My head now hurts as this media is the same, copied from his drive onto another... Unfortunatly i can't look at the setup the guys had when the stuff was digitised - but what confuses me if that is the cause, is that it is aby Josh B - Café LA Re: Bizzare issue with Audio Levels over Firewire. - 17 years agogotcha, will have a look today cheers!by Josh B - Café LA Re: Bizzare issue with Audio Levels over Firewire. - 17 years ago<<I'd give anything if you could find one of the tapes that "used to work." >> Sorry you've lost me there, i've seen hundreds of tapes go through fine, levels correct etc etc, and the guys doing this have never reported any problems to me. I'll have a nosy around tomorrow, problem is i wasn't the one digitising the stuff, and it happened a while back, im just the oneby Josh B - Café LA Re: Bizzare issue with Audio Levels over Firewire. - 17 years ago<<How low is really low? >> Well on parts of the footage on the tape it peaks, in Final Cut the levels are struggling to come of the floor. Same tape - originally captured over firewire directly to G5. then re-digitised on a DSR via AJA IO haha no its definatly not a large broadcast machine... i believe was a small DV Camera to be exact! <<Just listening to the deck oby Josh B - Café LA Bizzare issue with Audio Levels over Firewire. - 17 years agoI've got a head scratcher that any input an advice on would be most appreciated: A few weeks ago we digitised in a large project - with several computers going at the same time - one was digitising via an AJA IO over SDI and two others were capturing over Firewire directly to the crate. all footage at 100% Res. A large percentage of the Audio captured during this time is there, but the levby Josh B - Café LA Re: OT: Mac Pro and A.E. -Repost - 17 years agoCouple of things - im very interested about running AE 7 on it so any working indicators you could give for renders and general work would would be great, but also before i forget would also be interesting to know how the Firewire on the ProMacs is shaping up?by Josh B - Café LA Re: OT: Mac Pro and A.E. -Repost - 17 years agoAaron many thanks for -reposting thisby Josh B - Café LA Re: FCP failure to launch - 17 years agoBrilliant, glad to hear its fixed. Its a good one to remember in future if you have problems with FCP my first stop is almost always to the preferences folder!by Josh B - Café LA Re: FCP failure to launch - 17 years agoUm I hate to ask as im guessing this has been done but i see no point at the post when you've said you have trashed all the FCP preference and cache files. The reason creating a new user has fixed the problem - is because it is creating new preference files for FCP and the new user. -edit Often if you find the application icon 'bounces' a few times in the dock and then disappears, its dby Josh B - Café LA Re: Simplevideout to DVD recorder via firewire - 17 years agoBen is a touch drunk at the moment, but the steps he's gone over 'should' work - the Firewire option should become after you refresh A/V Devices - and you then have the DVD Recorder being seen by final cut as a non controllable DV Camera. - There is nothing on the DVD Recorder that you need to do in terms of selecting Firewire as the input is there? Have you got a monitor hooked up to see ifby Josh B - Café LA Re: Simplevideout to DVD recorder via firewire - 17 years agoboots73, If your having problems like this and can't afford the full Capture card solution then there are consumer products such as the Formac Studio DV which will take a firewire output with S-Video and Composite outputs. it costs aproximatly £100, and comes in handy for using your TV as a monitor for Final Cut.by Josh B - Café LA Re: Journaled? - 17 years agoAbsolutely not Gabe, i believe such utilities as 'Cocktail' (which is basically a slick GUI for some handy little Unix commands) will allow you to turn off and on journalling without erasing your drive.by Josh B - Café LA Re: Noisey G-Raid - 17 years agoeither that or/and when the weather is very hot we put big fans in the edit suite - they both help keep the client cool, the Harddrives cool, and disguise the sound the hard drives make!! 3 birds in one stoneby Josh B - Café LA Re: vanished footage mystery - 17 years agohave you tried playing the tape on different cameras/decks? I was going to ask has it recorded any sound but if there is no TC i guess thats a no! Post Edited (08-19-06 07:18)by Josh B - Café LA Re: Will FCP 5.1 still work with non-U apps? - 17 years agoSpot on john - just run custom installs installing only the apps and you'll save yourself a lot of time! the 'support' files, template media etc is all the same.by Josh B - Café LA Re: Boot drive decision - 17 years agoIf your short of space and your not installing all the templates etc that come with FCPS then id boot from the 80 and keep the 250 as a second internal for all your projects and media etc. Otherwise use the 250 as a boot and then the 80 as a project file backup typish drive, thing...by Josh B - Café LA Re: Will FCP 5.1 still work with non-U apps? - 17 years agoQuoteAnd for that matter, is it worth it to save a copy of the 5.04 app on my HD just in case (if I rename it so it doesn't get upgraded)? Absolutely - while updating our suites we had a mix of 5 and 5.1 - if you've got to move projects around making sure you are backwards compatible is invaluable! regarding interoperability between the non universal and universal apps i couldn't say but i thby Josh B - Café LA Re: HELP W/ COMPRESSOR 1.0 - 17 years agowhen a programme starts loading then unexpectedly disappears from the dock it can be a tell tale sign that you have errors with your disk permissions... do a quick 'repair disk permissions' in your disk utility, just to make sure you can rule it out the equation!by Josh B - Café LA Re: Need your feedback on this trailer. It's one minute long. Thanks for looking - 17 years agoI understand the wish to make all the creative decisions, but you don't have to work without a crew to do so. Creative input is something a director can take or leave at their discretion - the better your crew and those who input creative ideas are then then the better the choices you are provided with to make. Thanks for looking. - 17 years ago1) Will you buy a DVD of this movie after you see the trailer? no. 2) Does the trailer tell a story? If it does im struggling to follow it 3) What do you like about this trailer? Im afraid im struggling again. 4) What do you hate about it? Hate is a bit extreme, but i find it badly paced with little narrative. 5) Does the music work?
