ExtDrive Suggestions - 14 years agoHi folks, What are most important specs for an external drive? Disk speed or data transfer rates? Anyone using a 5400 rpm? I thought I read that Apple recommended 7200 rpm, right? ATA, SATA? USB2 work at all, would FW800 be best? Thinking a 1 or 2 TB, does disk size itself have an impact on performance? Oh, this is FCP 6 on an iMac and MacBook Pro, hence the need for an external unit.by rickman - Café LA Work flow for 2 computers - 14 years agoHi guys, The answer may already be here, I just don't know the proper terminology. I am trying to help edit a project on a separate computer. Having 2 people edit simultaneously to finish quicker. Sounds like a plan. Right now all the clips are on one machine, say computer "A". What is the best way to move files to another computer, "B", edit them and move them back to &by rickman - Café LA Change voice Pitch? - 14 years agoHi folks, Can somebody point me to a post or site for audio help? I have a clip where I need to lower the pitch of a woman's voice to make her sound more ominous and menacing. Well .... she supposed to be an angry witch and all. I have tried using the Apple effects control for pitch, but I can't tell its doing anything. Of course I am probably not implementing it correctly. Can anyone point me to a tutorial for adding gun flares and whispy smoke to a shootout scene? I suspect the application of choice is After Effects but all I have is FCP, Motion, Photoshop and Illustrator. Can I do it with this assortment of apps? If you know of any other apps under $100 that would help let know. Thanks, Rickby rickman - Motion Effect How to?? - 14 years agoMorning all, I know you've seen this a hundred times. Sometimes used to heighten action or in dream sequences. It appears like its double exposed and that there is a double image moving across the screen. the images finally converge. Most times, the video is slowed down a bit too. I tried stacking copies of the same track and keyframing an offset. But it is just not there yet. Is there sby rickman - Café LA Order of effects - 15 years agoGreetings all, I was wondering if there is a proper or preferred order in which to apply effects to your project?? For example I have some footage that needs to be color corrected, lightened up AND slowed down a bit. Where do I you suggest I start? Thanks, Rick in memphisby rickman - Café LA Silhouette city Skyline? - 15 years agoHi folks, Just watched the iTunes clip for the movie "Creating Central City". Cool, but it didn't tell me anything. I liked the shots of the character running over the rooftops with the city in silhouette beyond. The skyline reminded me of pictures of the Smoky Mountains where each mountain range is a different hue of blue. They may have used actual shots of the city and just madeby rickman - Motion Analog to DV converters? - 15 years agoHi folks, looking for opinions. I am preparing to convert some old camcorder VHS files to DV in order to compile some home video DVDs. (about 30 cassettes so far) Can anyone recommend an inexpensive Analog to DV converter? Less than $200. I am not looking for a professional tape deck here. On Loren's suggestion to skip the viewer I went back to the timeline to try. I don't know what I did differently but it grabbed it this time. (Tasted just fine too.) Perhaps I was zoomed in too much as Nick suggested because I was trying to get in tight to the cut. Without this forum, I would be really lost in space ... I am missing something here. I have read the FCP manual and Larry Jordan's fine book. I was attempting a split edit on the timeline with the roll tool. It wasn't grabbing the edit point. I decided to do one in the viewer. Can't get the video/audio track to show up like in the manualby rickman - Café LA filter/effect search - 15 years agoHi folks, Working on a dream sequence. Scene was shot with a bit of fog but its just not coming out right. It looks like, well ... a foggy room. I am looking for a filter or effect but I don't know what to call it. Its a shimmering, distorting, wavy look. Like the heat waves you see in the desert, or rising from hot pavement in the summer. This has sparked a whole new area of questions for me. I have looked at external drives and it seems that internal drives are a wee bit cheaper (30% in some cases). No case with spiffy colored lights and connections I presume. Situation: A guy wants me to help him edit his movie. He says the files are all on external firewire drives. He is running FCS version 2. I am running FCP 4.5 on a nice G4 w/ 2 gig RAM and 4 internal drives. He has not assembled much into the timeline but he has all his stuff logged and in appropriate bins. #1 if Iby rickman - Café LA FCP or Motion task? - 15 years agoConcept: I need to animate a "map". Sounds simple enough. Imagine a picture of a city map. There are a couple thousand "dots" that represent population count. I want to have these dots (not all but maybe 25%) slowly shift to illustrate the population migration over a 10 year period. I anticipate that the map base will remain fixed and the dots can be moved with keyframiby rickman - Café LA Re: Working with a Macphobe UPDATE - 15 years agoThanks for all the input! I saved the file to at least 4 different formats. When I gave it to him, I asked him to try the mov first since it would probably be the higher quality image. His 'church presentation software' dropped it right in without a hiccup... as he sat there looking confused. The chap who operates the computer (this is at a church btw) sees no need or "virtue" in loading up any Apple branded software. What formats will QT Pro export to? Or can anyone recommend any other apps that can convert .mov to other windows compatible formats for under $50. As much as I would like one, I am not ready (financially that is, not emotionally) to upgrade my humble G4/Panther to a $3k Pro BEASTMASTER. Not a sound engineer. Don't wanna be a sound engineer BUT, I would like to have good audio for my flick. We all know that bad audio makes a good video seem amateurish. I am not a pro video guy, YET, but I am working on a project with some other folks that will probably end up at some film festivals this year. I am guessing the folder that holds them has been moved. I have located the folder with the apple loops in it but now I don't know where it is supposed to be for STP to find them.
