Re: Mac OS X Lion, New MacBook Air & Mac Minis - 11 years agoOnly had 25 mins on it so far - had to switch back to do some urgent work until I had time to update some of my drivers for hardware - eg the RAIDs!by Ben King - Café LA FCPX on Lion - 11 years agoSo far FCPX on Lion feels the same and there are no obvious improvements in performance by running it under Lion. I will have to see how reliable it is by running it for some time - maybe the lost media and undo bugs wont be an issue but who knows.by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: Mac OS X Lion, New MacBook Air & Mac Minis - 11 years agoCHeers Walter - Can't say I looked at the previous spec - nice to know if people pic up an old model cheap. Does the old one handle FCP7/X?by Ben King - Café LA Mac OS X Lion, New MacBook Air & Mac Minis - 11 years agoMac Mini now has HDMI out and Thunderbolt - maybe with FCPX in mind. Can you say how After Effects handles DNxHD and if it plays back nicely in the Mercury playback engine? Currently AE CS5.5 (and earlier) does not use the Mercury Playback engine - only Premiere CS5+ has Mercury Playback. However AE CS5.5 will handle any CODEC you have the (working) QT CODEC component for.by Ben King - Avid Media Composer Re: Basic cost to switch to Adobe - 11 years agoYeah I think so - not had any issues on the CS5 and 5.5 Not sure what CS6 will bring though.by Ben King - Café LA Re: Basic cost to switch to Adobe - 11 years agoQuotePP requires a 64-bit operating system. I don't know if you have to be booted into 64-bit, or just need to have the 64-bit processor... So does FCPX I'd wait and see what the new Mac Pro's bring in terms of GPUs - but the 4000 is a good card for PP and Resolve and Smoke and AE. However you might want to try to find a second-hand EVGA GTX285 Mac Edition. Or hack a PC one... Still not happy.by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: Poor text performance - 11 years agoAre you suggesting my GPU isn't up to scratch? Bigger and badder than the GTX285 is not currently available outside of a Hackintosh... even the 4000 wouldn't beat it in a lot of tests and certainly not in the ProApps. I know ProApps are more optimised for the AMD GPUs but even the 5870 isn't that much faster than my 285! Considering FCPX's other really powerful realtime capabilities I am pretty annoyed that the basic stuff is not!by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: Avid training for an FCP user? - 11 years agoThere is no doubt the lower end and entry level edit market will be huge - this means for third-parties and for consultancy, training, documentation on FCPX, Motion 5 and Compressor will be VERY profitable regardless of any of us complaining. I can foresee we will be asked to take projects started in FCPX to finish. My advice would indeed to go off and learn (or relearn) Avid or add to Premby Ben King - Avid Media Composer Re: Shortening a clip in the storyline without rippling - 11 years agoHighlight the clip or bladed section you want and press does a ripple delete. Dragging clip(s) in position mode will add a gap where you make it or overwrite instead of insert/ripple magnetic timeline.by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: Curious what direction LAFCPUGers are going? Remain with FCP or switch? - 11 years agoI'm not sure why they don't offer FCS3 on the App Store as Separates - they could always put a disclaimer and say there is no official support as its legacy software...by Ben King - Café LA Re: The Final Cut Pro X Bug List - 11 years agoActually the bug can make things worse than not saving - it can register the undos - then save and not show it - when you restart its however many undos you went back on! This only happened on the first occasion - so if anyone else gets the undo bug (and the project isn't important) please try undoing more then restart the app, see if you can replicate.by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: The Final Cut Pro X Bug List - 11 years agoI've encountered the undo bug on a couple of occasions - nothing obviously repeatable for testing at my end.by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: If Apple's lost Larry....... - 11 years agoGuys guys! I know everyone is still very upset about Apple's choice to EOL FCP7 and has alienated a great many Pros with FCPX but lets be civil here please. Venting your anger (thats really about about Apple) or off-hand comments (even wrapped up in an analogy) could be misconstrued as insults and in the heat of things people will be insulted. Its what made the FCP community great - its what everyone else is now emulating in all other NLEs. There was a time Avid editors wouldn't even peeby Ben King - Café LA - X Re: LAYERING VIDEO AND TEXT - 11 years agoHey Ray Yes you can and if you get Motion as well you can create your own templates that are editable (such as text input) directly in FCPX. You can also layer text and images as with FCP7 et al. Photoshop PSDs do work including transparency but not currently multi-layered it simply loads flattened.by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: Single side trim while seeing both outgoing frame and incoming frame in Canvas/Viewer - 11 years agoTick Prefs>Editing>Show detailled trimming feedbackby Ben King - Café LA - X Re: LAYERING VIDEO AND TEXT - 11 years agoI've just been playing with the text tools - very customisable - very easy - very pretty... But even simple text overlay makes the storyline chug until its rendered. Annoying! I haven't played much with the text tools much but as far as I know you can make your own templates.by Ben King - Café LA - X Re: Curious what direction LAFCPUGers are going? Thats ok Gary - I have special pills to take before, during and 1 week after an Avid edit. I'm sure it's not just me, but I do seem to end up in facilities that have a lot of Avid's with bugs or media issues and it has somewhat marred my opinion of Avid and years of having to manage our old MC and MCby Ben King - Café LA Re: Curious what direction LAFCPUGers are going?
