ProTools freelancer -- any reccs? - 15 years agoLooking for a ProTools person to do some basic sound cleanups for me on some interview footage. Prefer someone in Burbank/Valley areas. Appreciate any recommendations. Thanks, JKby John K - Jobs Re: HDV nightmare - 15 years agoWhy do you need to go to DV? You'd be capturing at a higher resolution and a better codec (ProRes) and then dumping it down to lower res. That's like ordering a tasty Chicago-style hot dog and only eating the bun. Or something. Is the rest of your project in DV and you're trying to integrate? Or do you just want to make SD outputs? JKby John K - Café LA Re: RAID 'Critical' but no drive error. Hmm... - 15 years agoI was able to run DW on the RAID before with no problem. In fact, it was the only thing that could repair it after a kernel panic screwed up the permissions on the RAID (no write access). Something's definitely changed in the last week or so... JKby John K - Café LA Re: RAID 'Critical' but no drive error. Hmm... - 15 years agoIt's these 'problems I can't identify' that drive me nuts too. Even tech support was stumped on this one. I'm building my 2 TB backup device no matter what happens, that way I have some insurance against total failure.by John K - Café LA Re: RAID 'Critical' but no drive error. Hmm... - 15 years agoYes it's under warranty. The tech thought it was best to send in the whole unit but yeah I agree, that seems drastic. Especially because of their move, it's going to take G-Tech a while to fix it which is not going to work for me. I could try to get a hold of someone else and see if they'll just ship me a single drive. With RAID 5, will I lose data if Drive 3 is actually OK but I pull it anywaby John K - Café LA Re: OT - printing thumbnail galleries of a folder of movies - 15 years agoI'm using Final Print by Digital Heaven. It can generate thumbnails from XML files. Only problem is, you would have to import all those movies into FCP to generate the XML file. If he has a bunch of odd formats that FCP won't read (mp4s, wmv, mpegs) then you'll be SOL. HTH, JKby John K - Café LA RAID 'Critical' but no drive error. Hmm... - 15 years agoI'm running a G-SPEEDes 3TB at RAID 5. This weekend I happened to check the status page and the RAID was listed as 'Critical.' No warning, no beeps, no red light next to any of the drives (4x 750GB). When I tried to rebuild the array the log definitely pointed at Drive #3 as not responding, but after a restart there's still no warning about that drive and all of them say 'OK' under status. Mediaby John K - Café LA Re: ProResHQ performance -- is this normal? - 15 years agoHi Joe, Believe it or not, I'm already talking to Rudy! And yes, he's great and AJA is great and we're working through this. Here's the thing: this is my first time working with ProResHQ material, and so I have nothing to compare my results to. If this was another format I had worked with previously I would know what to expect and could tell if there was suddenly a problem with this new devby John K - Café LA ProResHQ performance -- is this normal? - 15 years agoHey guys, What kind of RT performance can I expect on a ProRes HQ timeline with 1080i ProRes HQ material? I know that's based on a lot of factors (CPU, drive speed, RAM) but let's say with a quad Mac Pro and a SATA RAID and 4GB of memory, should I be able to view things like text generators or basic changes to a clip (like scaling) without dropping frames? Because right now I'm getting green rby John K - Café LA Greyed out "HIGH" Quality in RT, anyone? - 15 years agoBeen working through a weird issue I've been experiencing when playing video through an AJA IoHD. AJA recommends setting Video Playback Quality to HIGH in the Prefs, but when I create a 1080i 29.97 ProRes HQ timeline the HIGH setting is greyed out (under the RT dropdown). It defaults to MEDIUM no matter what the preferences say, and that led to several kernel panics when I had a mixed format timeby John K - Café LA Re: Re-syncing sound in DVD studio Pro - 15 years agoIs the audio out of sync when you play your tracks in DVDSpro? And was it in-sync when you made your mpegs and audio files? I just posted how to change the audio start time when I noticed you said VIDEO. Shoot, sorry man. No way I know of to slip the video track forward, it's locked at 000000. I suppose you could try exporting a 2-frame slug from FCP and dropping that in front of your video oby John K - DVD Studio Pro Re: Kona 3 -- too much card for this boy? - 15 years agoYes, they are awesome! They agreed that the hardware acceleration of HDV and DVCProHD on a Mac Pro was negligible, so that's not a dealbreaker. IoHD it is! Thanks all for your advice, JKby John K - Café LA Re: Kona 3 -- too much card for this boy? - 15 years agoThanks guys, really appreciate the responses. I'm really torn here, starting to lean towards the IoHD now as nice all-in-one solution. It's actually more than the Kona 3, although once you factor in the breakout box (to get analog audio out) it's pretty close. And if you add the HD10AVA, fuggedaboutit! Totally willing to do ProRes on this one, was going to recommend that to the client. Canby John K - Café LA Re: HELP! On Deadline! - slideshow in FCP with motion/render issues - 15 years agoWhoops, you're right Ben. I was thinking PRINT, not video there. That's what i get for chiming in late at night... JKby John K - Café LA Re: HELP! On Deadline! - slideshow in FCP with motion/render issues - 15 years agoDon't know if you have time to try this, but there's a faster way than rescanning the images. Set up a batch action in Photoshop to open, resize (reduce the DPI, not the physical size) and re-save with the same file name. It might take a while with that many images but let it run. Open up your FCP project and when the media re-links it should be to the smaller image files that would hopefully beby John K - Café LA Kona 3 -- too much card for this boy? - 15 years agoI'm reminded of the summer I went shopping for my first car; I found an awesome TransAm with furry seat covers, fuzzy dice and a sweet engine. I revved it up and turned to father, grinning. He said, "too much car, kid." Anywhoo... I've just taken a monster of a video job, prepping video loops for HD monitors at a client's trade show booth. Material is coming in at all shapes and sby John K - Café LA Re: Interesting Avid > FCP glitch - 15 years agoQuoteJust as a test, find one of the places where this happens. Then try exporting one shot, and then the next, individually as separate files. Does the issue still exist? Yup, still there. You know what, I think it's an interlacing issue. When I go frame by frame on my broadcast monitor I see where both fields mesh between the shots; it doesn't look like that on my LCD of course, I just see aby John K - Café LA Re: OSX 10.5.3 - 15 years agoThanks Ben, I had heard that might be a problem with these cards. I hope that does the trick and I don't need to replace it. JKby John K - Café LA Interesting Avid > FCP glitch - 15 years agoA quick question for all you Avid folks (or recovering Avid folks). I just got a job to cut a teaser trailer for a new feature film being cut on an Avid. I don't have Automatic Duck so the editor dumped the film to DVCam for me. The footage looks good but I noticed a weird glitch on several cuts in the film: right after the cut, the next frame takes a small hit. Everything gets slightly pixelaby John K - Café LA Re: OSX 10.5.3 - 15 years agoNo issues with QT 7.5? I've seen some folks are having playback problems... Anyway, 10.5.3, QT 7.4.5, MPro 2.66, FCS2.03, Adobe CS2. All good so far apart from some minor glitches that may have to do with Leopard overall (my x1900 graphics card is flaking a bit). JKby John K - Café LA Hey! Lookee there on the left side of the screen! - 15 years agoFancy new menu bar and logo too -- now with 100% more aqua interface-like appearance! Nice work, Michaelby John K - Café LA Re: Need Advice on updating Tiger and FCS2 - 15 years agoAll of the new Octo-cores are Leopard only.by John K - Café LA Re: QuickTime Conversion and Compressor - 15 years agoKjoske, You're trying to do two different things at the same time and getting things mixed up. If you want to put video onto a DVD, the compression setting is MPEG-2. Period. That's the only format that a playable DVD will accept and the only format that DVD Studio Pro will work with to make a standard definition DVD. Use the 16:9, 90-minute DVD preset in Compressor to output the video andby John K - Café LA Re: Exporting QT looks crummy - 15 years agoDid you change anything in between the earlier draft outputs and this one? upgrade FCP or Quicktime? The 8-bit will look better (especially your titles) but yes, it will take a long time. The other option is to export straight to Compressor, set up your MPEG-2 settings and let 'er go overnight. Will still take a while and lock up FCP, but it won't render into DV compression first (which can beby John K - Café LA Re: quicktimes at 29.96 fps - 15 years agoDo you still have the DVD? Because I would try re-ripping the video straight to DV directly off the disc. Handbrake doesn't offer this though, you'll need to use something like MPEG Streamclip or DVDxDV. And this is a non-commercial DVD, right? MP4s are so heavily compressed, they're not going to upscale well no matter what you try. What you've done is squeeze your original video down to a poby John K - Café LA Re: 10.5.3 issues, anyone? Aaaarrggh! - 15 years agoThanks all. My prefs are stable now, took one last trashing of them to do it. FCP Rescue is worth it's weight in gold and then some! I don't think my caches are an issue with a fresh install like this, especially because there was nothing else on the drive before. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Matrox is still giving me issues; I had a freeze when running video preview out of Motion theby John K - Café LA Re: 10.5.3 issues, anyone? Aaaarrggh! - 15 years agoUPDATE: Just noticed that my preferences are not sticking; everything resets back to defaults when I re-open the program. This *might* be related to the issue. Any ideas besides trashing prefs, which I've already done?by John K - Café LA Re: QT Rendering..... - 15 years agoIf you intend to bring clips BACK into FCP after exporting, then do not use QT Conversion. It's compressing your footage and using a viewing Codec (H.264, MPEG4, Sorensen) versus an editing Codec (DV, 8-bit, ProRes...). The imported QT needs rendering because your timeline settings don't match the QT settings (and you CAN'T set the timeline Compressor to a viewing Codec). If you're messing witby John K - Café LA Re: Would YOU wait till June 9th WWDC to upgrade to FCP Studio 2 - 15 years agoFCP upgrades have traditionally come out around NAB-time, so I doubt you'll be surprised there. Steve Jobs rarely likes to mention Pro Apps or machines during his Keynotes, prefers to focus on consumer items like the iPhone, AppleTV, iMac, iLife, etc. I wouldn't buy a MacBook Pro anytime soon though, those are due to be updated this summer.
