Re: What do you think of ATI 3870HD (MAC / PC Edition). - 15 years agoI just upgraded to this card (from ATI x1900). Definitely saw the improvement in Motion. Still not getting perfect real-time playback on complex 3D jobs, but it's no longer choking on them either. The card is so cheap too, definitely worth it. JKby John K - Café LA Re: OT: DVD audio loses sync during film festival - 15 years agoThanks for the clarification guys. I didn't recognize the DVD player brand so it was probably a data rate issue as Derek suggests. It's just so frustrating not being able to make a disc that is compatible with even 99% of the players out there. But that's DVD for you I guess. The Digibeta audio sounded fine on our end but levels were still too hot for their mixer, and I didn't want to take anyby John K - Café LA OT: DVD audio loses sync during film festival - 15 years agoJust got back from the Cleveland International Film Festival where my short film "SHADOW.NET" screened. The fest was really great but my screening just about gave me a heart attack. I found out after I got there that my Digibeta had overmodulated audio (dubbed it too hot, my bad) so they had to screen it off a DVD. The short is 20 minutes, and it played fine up until the last two minuteby John K - Café LA Re: S16 Grain - 15 years agoHave you screened a workprint on 16mm? I know that may be a pain but maybe the lab would run a test strip for you. See if your original footage is as grainy as the ProRes file. JKby John K - Café LA Re: Audio Popping -- Searched the archives, no answer. NOT mp3 problem! - 15 years agoYour audio settings should match, that can lead to problems. Try converting it to 16 bit as that's the correct bitrate for DV. I've has issues with .dv files and FCP. They don't behave exactly like the DV .mov files that are native to the DV preset (like when you capture from a camera). I think the audio never quite comes in right. I don't use VisualHub but see if you can export to a Quicktimeby John K - Café LA Re: Wanted: Airport Extreme or Time Capsule - 15 years agoI did finally find one for a decent price on eBay, all good. This was like 2 years ago. My main issue with them now is contacting tech support. I feel like things have gone downhill since Fabrik bought them, maybe Hitachi will makes things better. ? They do not respond to support email reqby John K - Café LA Re: Making a tape - 15 years agoI had this issue before (bad audio from DSR-11), and I'm sorry that I can't quite remember what the fix was. But I think it involved a quick trip to my Easy Setups menu and re-selecting DV NTSC as the preset, then possibly restarting FCP. I had been editing other formats (DVCProHD) and it was like FCP got confused; resetting everything to the proper DV settings did the trick. Like it needed a virby John K - Café LA Re: How would you mix AVC Intra, DVC Pro HD and DV all in the same project? - 15 years agoJust a quick note: the latest Mac Pro graphic cards no longer have dual DVI ports, so that will factor into her MXO setup. It requires a standard DVI port, no info on whether a Mini DisplayPort>DVI adapter works so that would have to go to her other monitor. And Matrox has not released any info about the new cards and whether or not they're even compatible with the MXO. JKby John K - Café LA Re: Edit suite upgrade [DV-HDV] - 15 years agoTo be honest, you could edit HDV with the setup you have now. You don't need a RAID to edit HDV, you could run it off external FW drives if you wanted to. If you bring it in as ProRes (which a lot of folks recommend) then yes, it's better to have faster storage. With the upgrades you're looking at you would also be able to edit more robust HD formats in the future, like the EX-1 footage or ProResby John K - Café LA Re: Running Compressor as a client: FlipFactory style? - 15 years agoYeah, set up your Preset in Compressor and save as a Droplet to your Desktop. Easy Peasy. JKby John K - Café LA Re: Blu Ray as an output option... - 15 years agoHaven't burned one myself yet, but: QuoteWikipediaDiscs encoded in MPEG-2 video typically limit content producers to around two hours of high-definition content on a single-layer (25 GB) BD-ROM. The more advanced video codecs (VC-1 and MPEG-4 AVC) typically achieve a video runtime twice that of MPEG-2, with comparable quality. How to name a disc in toast 8.0?? - 15 years agoHey Robert, When you select Video: DVD video in the left column, the black bar across the top of the right column (where you drag your TS folders) reads: DVD-Video: My DVD. If you click on the 'My DVD' it becomes and editable text field and you can name it whatever you want. Just curious, if you have the TS folders from DVDSpro, why not burn a DVD from there and then just use the COPY commaby John K - Café LA OT: Compressor presets bundle. Apple Trailers, Flash, YouTube & more - 15 years agoJust saw this in the newsletter: CRAMCompressor Looks like a pretty sweet deal. I could probably make a few of these on my own but 330? And the Flash FLV export alone is worth the $39. Has anyone bought this yet? JKby John K - Café LA Re: Samsung DLP doesn't recognize MacBook Pro - 15 years agoIs there no DVI or HDMI port?by John K - Café LA OT: standalone DVD recorder recommendations - 15 years agoLooking to get a decent standalone recorder unit, what are you guys using? Doesn't have to be fancy, so long as it has decent inputs (DV, S-Video or better) and can burn every +, -, RWDL etc. I've noticed a lot of the new ones have HDMI and upscaling and are still only around $100... JKby John K - Café LA Re: "Apple-Movie Trailers" conversions - 15 years agoI don't claim to be an expert on compression, just thought I would share what has worked for me: First, the H.264 presets in Compressor are worthless. The lower settings are outdated, hobbling the video with low frame rates that are unnecessary in the age of broadband. The LAN setting is the highest quality but best used as a starting point for creating your own settings. And thanks for the explanation of 'None' Jeff, I didn't know any of that. Next time I'll be more specific about what I want back when I send out FX shots. I actually had enough time to export all of my original DVCProHD footage without re-compression, then combine it on a new timeline with the FX shots that had been compressed down to DVCProHD. Everythinby John K - Café LA Re: blu-ray authoring with CS4 Encore - 15 years agoThere are Blu-Ray burners, both internal and external. You can check prices at OWC. Toast is another alternative, cheaper than CS4 (since you can't just buy Encore solo) but not as sophisticated. I think the big drawback right now is that Blu-Ray discs will not play at all in OSX because Apple has not licensed the HDCP copy protection that is required for Blu-Ray. They're actually not graphics, the shots done in AE were all green screen composites. And they represent the bulk of my short, maybe 75-80%. Very little of the untouched DVCProHD footage remains. Thanks Shane; I totally get what you're saying.by John K - Café LA Media Manager "Recompress" setting question - 15 years agoI'm about to color correct my short film in Color and I'm prepping the FCP project per the colorist's instructions. They've seen a lot of the quirks and have given me steps to avoid issues (baking all footage with time ramps, stills, etc.) They've asked me to make sure all the clips in the final sequence are the same Codec; my original footage was DVCProHD 720p24, but a lot of shots were sent outby John K - Café LA Wanted: Airport Extreme or Time Capsule - 15 years agoMy office router finally crapped out on me, would like to find a used Airport Extreme Base Station to replace it. Thanks, JKby John K - lafcpug Market Re: Shane, other Pana P2 VHX200 gurus.... - 15 years agoShould also point out that the P2 system does not produce QT clips when recording. The data will be broken up into multiple files that FCP will convert into QTs during the Log and Transfer process. It is faster than capturing DV in real time, but it's still not an instant conversion.
