Re: While using FCP got a popup window saying to SHUT DOWN the computer. - 13 years agoI have an original G5 Dual 2.0 still in service as a sound mixing station. When I first got it, there were frequent kernel panics. At least once a week, sometimes more. They were solved with an OSX revision about 6 months later. So kernel panics can certainly be caused by software issues. My G5 also shipped with a video card that had intermittent issues from the start and eventually had toby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Rubbish Audio correction?? - 14 years agoIf you know someone with Pro Tools you can send them a sample and let them try "Bomb Factory Essentials Clip Remover" filter. It has been part of the free software included with Pro Tools software for the last several years. Not sure if there is a similar Logic/Soundtrack Pro filter. We had a problem a couple of years ago with sound that was recorded in camera with the line/mic switch sby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Avid-style Audio Mixdown - 14 years agoJust curious, If this is going to an "audio guy" why can't you avoid all this work and just export OMF? It sounds like you are mixing stereo music and effects into mono? Why?by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Why no Blu-Ray - 14 years agoThe licensing issues with Blu-ray are a huge issue for everyone except the movie studios, for which the outrageous fees are just a small part of their large budgets. Apple and Sony don't get along that well anyways, but this problem is all in Sony's court, not Apple's.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Anyone using the Highpoint RocketRAID 2640x4? - 14 years agoThere are good reasons for choosing a hardware raid over software, but this Highpoint card seems to be doing well. I have been running it for a couple months now. I may go with the CalDigit card later, but for now this has been working fine and I have an additional NAS drive for backing up critical files. It's just a small 500gig drive and is not used for media which can be recaptured if neeby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Dead FW Drive - 14 years agoMaxtor was purchased by Seagate a couple years ago but I believe the drives are still made separately by the two companies. Hopefully Seagate will improve Maxtor's quality over time. I have a relative in Seagate's research division and he said that basically the smaller drive makers will not be able to compete due to the high research and engineering costs associated with recording to smallerby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: HD monitor for FCP - 14 years agoInputs are Display Port 1.1, HDMI 1.3, DVI, component, s-video. So obviously you would need a converter if you wanted to go SDI. The Dreamworks guys seem to rave about the color accuracy. So it's worth having some broadcast experienced editors or engineers get their hands on it and put HP's claims to the test.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: HD monitor for FCP - 14 years agoKeep an eye on the HP Dreamcolor 10bit LCD reference monitor HP developed in a partnership with Dreamworks. It's not getting much attention yet in the video world. I asked Scott Gentry over at ProVideoCoalition if he could get one of his writers to get their hands on one for a review. He is looking into it. It comes with preset gammas for HD and SD as well as film and print. You can find vidby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: OT: 120hz HDTVs. OY VAY!! - 14 years agoI have seen this effect myself on displays in retail stores when Sony started pushing their 120hz sets. The "motion enhancement" looks horrible. That's if you really love the look of 24p over interlaced video for the movies or "filmed" television shows. The effect looks just like video. And it's weird because the effect will be apparent one shot and not the next depending oby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Viewsonic Display - 14 years agoJust a note regarding the ACD as a broadcast reference display. I was at Siggraph last month and HP was showing several of their new Dreamcolor 24" monitors. They are not cheap at around $3200 street, but are supposed to be reference grade. They had one sitting next to an ACD and there was a huge difference between the two. Blacks on the ACD were milky compared to the HP. The onlyby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Gradient (non-radial) focus plug in for Final Cut Pro? - 14 years agoI think Bradley is looking for a focus plugin driven by a depth map gradient that you could hand create. I am not absolutely sure but I think there is a Foundy Tinderbox plug that will do that although it would have to be applied in Shake or After Effects. Tinderbox 2 has something called "T_BlurMasked" that you could look at. The same package contains "T_LensBlur" which doesby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Suggestions for inexpensive WinXP Pro, Video Edition/Capture Software. - 14 years agoYou might look at Premier Elements 7 for cheap cross-platform. Or just Premier Pro. You would need to go to an appropriate forum to find out what capture formats are available that can be passed on to FCP if that is what you intend to edit with. I have Premier Pro for Mac as part of an Adobe bundle though I have not used it except to look at the editing interface. I started it up and openedby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: dvx200 vs 200A - 14 years agoJust go to that page and read the very last line in fine print at the bottom.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: dvx200 vs 200A - 14 years agoNo resolution difference between the two versions. Big improvement in the 200A with noise in the dark areas of the picture. I have the 200 and it is noisy. Thinking about selling it and getting the 200A.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: mac wont recognize blank dvd-r - 14 years agoThe Taiyo Yuden disks are really top quality although more expensive. You can Google for reviews and check it out. Their disks with the Watershield inkjet printable surface produce a really professional looking product with the right inkjet printer and graphic layout software. Here is a link to one retailer for price reference and further info Not shilling for Meritline, they just hby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Problems w/G-Technology - 14 years agoI have two G-Raids and they both have noisy fans. The units have performed flawlessly but the fans worry me. Since the units are past warranty I wonder if I could open the units myself and install better fans. I am sure it would cost a lot to have the new owner's service department do it.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Anyone using the Highpoint RocketRAID 2640x4? - 14 years agoYep Russ, that is exactly what I did. Bought the MaxUpgrades kit for two drives in the bottom optical bay although I only moved the one system drive into the space. Shane Ross mentioned a less expensive way of doing this but I have to say the the MaxUpgrades kit is a nice quality aluminum carriage that replaces the stock framework for the entire optical bay. If you do this, be prepared to takeby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Anyone using the Highpoint RocketRAID 2640x4? - 14 years agoI am using this card. Wanted the CalDigit but this one was $170, around $400 less. It does not have any connections for external drives, just the 4 internal. Had it about 3 weeks and so far no problems. The install requires purchasing a cable to bridge the 2640 to the multilane cable that connects the Mac's internal bays to the motherboard. I got the cable here: The only difficult parby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: CRAZY OT - apple and stereo mini-plugs - 14 years agoI got a mini adapter when I purchased my iPhone. Tiny, simple piece of plastic and metal. $20. Not brain dead at all. Just milkin' your customers.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: OT Another Which camera post? - 14 years agoI have an HVX first model. It is definitely has less resolution than the XLH1 or it's similarly priced competitors. So if resolution is the main thing you are after then go with the others. But the HVX has so many other great features that it's in a class of it's own. There was a little company called Real Stream that was developing a mod kit for the HVX to increase the resolution. Althoughby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Film to HD transfer service - 14 years agoThere are too many for me to name. I have used Company 3 but they are very expensive. Easily $800/hour and up depending on what you negotiate. The better places are using Spirit Datacine's with DaVinci front ends. The Ranks are pretty old for the most part. Didn't Rank go out of business? Could be wrong but that was my recollection. Perhaps others here have some good experiences at other tby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: New FCP Monitors: Suggestions? - 14 years agoPerhaps if you are looking for a second monitor to double as a reference display you might look at a couple new developments. First, the JVC reference monitors like the DT-V24L1DU for which JVC has just released calibration software. Or the HP Dreamcolor monitor which just started shipping a month ago. This is a collaboration between HP and Dreamworks to develop a reference grade monitorby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Film to HD transfer service - 14 years agoYou could try Pro8mm in Burbank They use an older Rank so maybe the price is decent. Or you could call around the usual large post facilities with telecine suites. But they cost $$$$$/hour.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Room color for home studio - 14 years agoThere is a SMPTE document for an optimal environment if you are doing final color work. I don't know where to find it now. It includes neutral gray walls, soft lighting on the wall behind the monitors, plus color temperature of the lighting and overall illumination levels in the room. Think flat lighting for the entire room but a little on the darker side.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Speed and Mirroring - 14 years agoHi Shane, Did you leave any information on a thread regarding how you mounted the system drive in the second optical bay? Maxupgrades.com has a kit for it but it is $129.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Speed and Mirroring - 14 years agoJon, I am curious about the battery situation on your card. You have an optional battery for sale separately. Does the card come with a battery? Is the optional one just to have a backup on hand? Do you really need batteries if the system is powered off an APC? Thanks for any info on that.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: Speed and Mirroring - 14 years agoLoren, Your thread is about RAID 0 and mirrors but I think maybe RAID 5 is a better solution. I just purchased an octo mac and I am trying to decide how I want to configure the hard drives. Shane Ross recently mentioned the new CalDigit RAID card. On their website CalDigit claims 4 SATA2 drives will yield 245mb/s under RAID 5. Enough for one stream of uncompress 10 bit HD. There are several rby Sprocketz - Café LA Re: OT: i don't get adobe's master collection 3.3 logic... - 14 years agoMy CS3.3 Master Collection just arrived so Adobe is shipping it.by Sprocketz - Café LA Re: color correction resources sought - 14 years agoJude Cotter Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > No - it's not anywhere near as important if you're > not going to broadcast.
