I found that yes you should convert the XDCAM to ProRes on output, but even better I've been told is to bring your XDCAM into a ProRes timeline BEFORE you start to edit. I made the rookie mistake of bringing in XDCAM into FCP via the Sony XFER software into a XDCAM codec timeline; and then having to export QT as ProRes. But we are going to use Apple Motion with some compromises. The output has to be 2400x600, 30p; but as my Video card only does 2k, I will output at 2048x512 and rescale the output with QT encoded to prores422 HQ. The quality will be good even with the upscale, and Motion will allow scrubbing of all my clips; whilst FCP would be one rby mark@avolution - Café LA Re: My video card, Motion, and maximum res - 14 years agoAccording to About this Max the Video Card is AGP. This is totally trivial to Apple Motion, 3D Studio, etc. I can't use Motion as it won't do 2400x600 (see message in Motion Forum) I could use 3D Studio but it is quite slow for the task at this resolution. Tests showed 20 minutes per 10 second "pan" for 3D Studio. For six one minute 2400x600 QTs this would be time prohibitive. Here are my specs Mac OS X 10.4.11 Dual 2.5Ghz PPC G5 2G RAM ATI Radeon 9800XT with 256M RAM Display Left LG MW30LZ11- 1280x960 MOC (millions of colors) Display Right Cinema HD Display 1920x1200 MOC (millions of colors) I need to do a presentation at 2400x600px, but Motion says "sorby mark@avolution - Motion Re: nesting and "scrolling" images - 14 years agoNo sir, no after effects. each of the four images (for the test) could be animated separately -but nesting (according to the docs) allows you to treat the nest as one "clip" (it is actually a sequence inside another sequence). So the "nest is layed out with three 800x600 images onscreen at test frame 0- and with another image sitting offscreen to the left. Prior to nesby mark@avolution - Café LA nesting and "scrolling" images - 14 years agoI am doing a test of screen scroll for a custom 2400x600 prores 30p sequence in fcp. ultimately the output will go to three monitors each 800x600 or a left, center, and right display. I set up four images to nest 1) offscreen left 2) left 3)mid 4) right I then nested the four images . As soon as load the motion panel of the nest, I notice that it only nested the onscreen images,by mark@avolution - Café LA OT- Handling Avis in FAQ - 14 years agoIn the FAQ under "Handling AVI files" It says you have to convert the avi files to QT in order to use in FCP. Ever since FCP 4.5 HD I have brought my avi's directly into FCP from 3ds Max. Here is my workflow so far 1)Use Sony Xfer to disk of XDCAM 23.98 HD (1440x1080) 2)Import onto a ProRes 1440x1080 timeline 3) add colour correct etc on this timeline 4)Copy and then paste clips onto a ProRes 720x486 SD 29.97 lower field timeline. 5)output to compresoby mark@avolution - Café LA Re: Exporting single clip from timeline? - 14 years agoGot it create a new bin called export and drag the clip to this bin, click on export QT. I don't like 23.98 because the frame rate is too low, and I think 29.97 1080i is much better for motion. It's basically a taste thing you are right, but the videographer likes 23.98 and I like 29.97.
