Click HERE to register now Hard drive: how much space to leave free? - 14 years agoI know many of you have said over the years that the rule of thumb is to leave 10-15% of your hard drives free, but is that still the case with large drives? I have some 2TB drives and I'm wondering if leaving 200GB (10%) or 300GB (15%) is overkill.by Garret - Café LA Re: Cluster won't compress my Prores file - 14 years agoStrypes, Thanks. I optimistically tried your suggestion, but it didn't solve the problem. Strange, right? Any other way to "flush" the system? Preferences or anything? Garretby Garret - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Cluster won't compress my Prores file - 14 years agoI have a 1920 x 1080 Prores file that I'd like to Compress using the "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes" settings. When I use my Cluster with 4 Instances (using one computer) and submit the Batch, the progress bar appears, but it says "Unknown time remaining" and no progress is made. If I use the default, "This Computer" cluster, it works. But of course, it takes way lby Garret - Compressor - Media Compression and Conversion Re: workflow: trading sequences with an assistant - 14 years agoGuys, I really do appreciate all the advice and help you give in the forums. I always know I can come here and get good, insightful answers delivered with a smile. Shane, you're always helpful and enthusiastic. I should have just written you a friendly private email if I had a problem with the way you said something. I'm over it. I know you meant no harm. As you can tell if you reread my first email, I do understand how FCP does things, but I was hoping for an insightful workaround. I do hear you when you say don't apply Avid mentality to FCP. Can't help it sometimes, even thought I've been cutting on FCP for awhile now. You give that clip to your assistant to edit. They edit, they return the cut to you. You open the cut and reconnect the sequence to the file on your hard drive. What am I missing? That you can now NOT match frame to the clip in your Browser? Nope...because the clip used was used in their project. Yes. QuoteShaneyou can press Shift F andby Garret - Café LA Re: workflow: trading sequences with an assistant - 14 years agoReconnecting is easy, Match Frame is easy, but Reveal Master Clip doesn't work. From my experience, I think that FCP is still thinking that the Master Clip relationship of the clip in the sequence my assistant gave me is in my assistant's project, not mine. I don't know of a way of reassigning that.by Garret - Café LA workflow: trading sequences with an assistant - 14 years agoMy assistant has FCP 5 on her laptop (an old laptop with only 512MB of RAM that won't install 6.0). I'm cutting on a MacPro with FCP 6.0.5. I want to give her a clip to cut down on her machine, then get it back from her and add to my project. The trick is maintaining the master clip relationship so that I can Match Frame and Reveal Master Clip in my project. If I give her the .mov file oby Garret - Café LA Re: getting black image, can hear sound - 14 years agoThanks all, for your thoughtful troubleshooting. This morning we uninstalled with FCS Remover, then reinstalled FCP Studio 2, then upgraded to FCP 6.0.5 and 7.6.2 (running OS 11.4.11). I get the same issue. Derek: I did verify that I'm on "Image" and not "Wireframe." Interestingly enough, when I switch it to "Image+Wireframe," I'm able to see a still frame of the clip in the viewer (previously, on "Image," it was just black). I can hear the sound. I can see one frame at a time on my external monitor. My guess is a QT/FCP/OS conflict. But I'm hoping you guys might have some ideas about how I can fix it. I'm just beginning to cut a feature doc in DVCPro HD 720/24pN that's going to be very very stock footage heavy. We're planning on ripping material from screener DVDs using MPEG Streamclip. Should I bother to use Compressor to convert the DV files to match my sequence settings? Or just plan on rendering when we're using this footage in the timeline? She needs to know the timecode of the first frame, of course. I'd rather not send video QTs with burn-in since we're FTPing the files and I want to keep them small. Right now I'm using Compressor to make audio files from the original QTs that we captured using FCP. I label them with the starting timecodeby Garret - Café LA Re: markers in multiclip - 15 years ago"the sad news is that the only one way to get effective markers in multiclips, is to add them to the clips BEFORE you make them into multis." This is OUTRAGEOUS!!! I just noticed that none of my multiclip markers that I made yesterday exist today. I go back and forth between Avid and FCP from job to job and am fine with it. Either one usually works for me. But yes, this is maby Garret - Café LA Best way to output 720 24pn to SD tape? - 16 years agoI think I've got a fairly simple and common question here. (Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find it.) I have a 720 24pn DVCPro HD sequence that I need to output to a miniDV tape. I don't have a Kona or Blackmagic card, I'm using Firewire to output to a camera. I tried the "nest the HD sequence into a DV sequence and render" method. In fact, I would think that many sound designers and composers might want a smaller file which plays back smoother, as long as it's frame-accurate. I'm looking for the best/fastest way to do this. Here's how I'm doing it: 1. In Sequence>Settings>Audio Options, changing the grouping to "Dual Mono" 2. This has worked great, with few issues. On Saturday, I upgraded the Decklink software and firmware to 6.6.1 and the HDLink to 2.4. But I probably also hold option and do the trimming just as often. Just depends. For instance, if I have a paired set of audio tracks, it takes longer to adjust each one separately while holding option than to just lock all the video tracks, then slip the audio. Does that make sense? How do you guys do something like thatby Garret - Café LA Re: How to batch lock / unlock tracks - 16 years agoNick, I like how you can quickly lock and unlock individual tracks with your mapping layout. I should give that a whirl. At the moment I have a simpler mapping: SHIFT-1 locks all video SHIFT-2 locks all audio That way I can do it with one hand. A friend taught me this mapping and it was a revelation.
