These pieces will all be between 90secs and 2.5 minutes so we won't have to upload any more than that. We're planning on leaving black holes where it's just VO to save on file size. Satellite or Vyvx time is to expensive. FedEx can't do it. In the past we've used special cby adelena - Café LA Re: archiving - 16 years agoC over Y our A ss I work in a post house where I'm the anointed FCP editor in a forest of Avid and Unity so I'm learning as I go along. All the music is canned and shelved in our library and there are no graphics to speak of other than what's already backed up on our graphics reels. I manage all of my own projects and disc space, thus these funny questions.by adelena - Café LA Re: h264 via ftp - 16 years agoDo you really think we'd be going this route if we had time for them to send us drives with "top quality footage?" Please Derek, light a candle don't curse the darkness. The footage will be ftp'd, our connection speed will be less than blazing. There's just no way for us to turn this thing around in the time alloted if we have to upload multiple gigs of DVCPro50 footage. My challeby adelena - Café LA Re: archiving - 16 years agoWhoa, thanks for the quick reply. All of my pieces are laid off to digibeta with split tracks, yes. This is kind of a CYA exercise and just really something I want to know for my own professional benefit and experience. "Skeleton" meaning just the project file ie the render files and raw footage can all go?by adelena - Café LA h264 via ftp - 16 years agoDoes anyone here have any experience "unpacking" h264 for editing. For the next two weeks I will be getting footage via ftp. To save upload and download time they will be sending h264 quicktimes. I've experimented around with re-encoding or transcoding (not sure which is proper terminology here?) the h264 files to ProRes and editing with that. They look fine, we're going to the inteby adelena - Café LA archiving - 16 years agoWhat's the best way to archive a project without keeping any of the raw footage? Is this a silly question? Is that what happens when you delete everything but your project file? I need to free up disk space but would like to keep the frame or skeleton of the project for archiving.by adelena - Café LA Re: Trying to access my 8 cores for faster compressor - 16 years agoI created a cluster a few months ago using instructions I found here. I export FCP movie then drag to a droplet. Each day, the first time I submit a file it says it can't find the cluster, I hit "ok" and "submit" and the batch manager submits it to the cluster and everything works fine? BTW, I love being able to do this. Frees up FCP and me to continue editing, etc...whileby adelena - Café LA Re: Video Format Resources? - 16 years agoWhat we need is a "cookbook" for video editors and graphic artists. I have no idea if something like this exists but the first person to get something like this published will undoubtedly make a pile of money. I've been looking for a similar resource for video encoded specifically for the web and internet/ftp delivery. Problem being, the technology seems to change so fast that a deadby adelena - Café LA Re: Anamorphic to 4:3 - 16 years agoDerek's suggestion was right on, thank you sensei. Removing the attributes was what I needed to do. I should've thought of that. The footage is 4:3 SD but was first edited into a 16:9 anamorphic timeline. I was trying to avoid having to re-create the edits for another format to output. Thank you all for the teach, Andreby adelena - Café LA Anamorphic to 4:3 - 16 years agoSo, I've got an anamorphic timeline with some 4:3 footage in it. FCP automatically centers it and my Quicktime layoff file is great. Plays 16:9 anamorphic with the 4:3 footage right where it should be. My boss comes to me and says that one of our clients needs just a straight 4:3 version. I'm thinking cool, I'll create a new 4:3 timeline and just copy and paste all of my edits into it, voila!by adelena - Café LA Re: Round and Round on the AVID vs FCP wheel of fortune... - 16 years agoInteresting read. The one thing holding our house back is Apple's lack of any sort of meaningful enterprise level support. It's really awful actually (and this from a guy who uses FCP 90% of the time, though I am an island unto myself at work.) What's more, we're heavily invested in Avid technology right now (Unity, Adrenaline, Media Composers etc...) Funny, the more I use both systems, the mby adelena - Café LA Re: Montage Ideas - 16 years agoI use luma flashes (there are some nice filters that come with FCP like glow, star effect, etc..that are key frameable) and "mini-montages" which are basically some really fast cuts of broll, motion, camera movements etc...in between my principle shots. A fellow editor just cut a tease that used a bunch of short dissolves between really short shots (short as in 5-10 frames max with 3 fby adelena - Café LA Re: QuickTime Conversion and Compressor - 16 years agoWhoa, whoa whoa...I've been outputting a FCP QT then using Compressor to batch them to straight h264 files and it seems a lot faster. Mind you, I'm not doing any scientifically accurate testing per se, but it seems like it's a lot faster then having FCP output each one to QT. I've got a virtual cluster set up on my machine which is a MacQuad, 3G RAM running FCP 6.0.1. None of my files are moreby adelena - Café LA Re: POLL : What is your workflow? - 16 years agoI work mostly with file transfer. I clip in IMX D10 50megs with an EVS, wrap in QT and transfer to my box on our network (network isn't fast enough to edit over.) Edit and output to h264 QT 'cause I'm headed to the internet not the big screen (or the slightly smaller tv screen.) This puts me in the full rez from start to finish (near finish anyway, haha) camp. We've been told by our EVS repby adelena - Café LA Re: 2k 4:4:4 online - 16 years agoIs there some special reason you think you need all 40hours available...in full rez? I mean other than the coolness factor? Just curious. Why wouldn't you just online the sequences you need in the interim and continue working in DV (offline?)by adelena - Café LA Re: Are Easy Setups with Custom Capture and Sequence Presets Portable? - 16 years agoShort answer, "yes." We do this with all of our edit computers that go to the field. Long answer, "yes," you will have to copy all of the presets & easy set-up files into their proper locations. Search around, I promise, they're in there. Sorry, I can't be more specific without the computer right in front of me. Andreby adelena - Café LA Re: flash .flv option in compressor? - 16 years agoencode h264 replace extension to .flv wrap into swf mo better than vp6 What do you use to do the wrapping? We still talking about third party software? Andreby adelena - Café LA Re: Update on problem - 16 years agoI ran into this problem on one of our Avids (please, don't start throwing stuff! haha) Clear some space on the drive you're exporting to. Worked for me. Sounds like it needs some elbow room to do the heavy lifting of exporting your QT file. Good luck, Andreby adelena - Café LA Re: Vision mixing? Is it so hard? - 16 years agoI started out linear, on a Sony BVW switcher. My edits were after a live show (I was the EVS operator.) Never actually TD'd (did sit in for our TD for a few minutes while he went to the bathroom occasionally.) I'd agree with V. It can be high stress depending on the director and the situation but, if you're pretty well organized, it shouldn't be to much trouble. I have lots of respect for ouby adelena - Café LA Compressor hangs up on import - 16 years agoUsing an IntelMac, 3GigRam, FCPStudio2, OSTiger. I work in IMX50 & DVCPro50 mostly. When I export a sequence to Compressor it works fine until I actually submit the job. It cranks through maybe 70% of the sequence and then hangs there...forever. I've only waited maybe 20 minutes before quitting out of Compressor so I can't say "forever" but you get the idea. I've had this same problem with clips that were not properly encoded (I'm still puzzling over a couple of incidences??) and with trying to play h264 clips off my timeline. I usually use Compressor and re-encode them to ProRes422 or (HQ.) I work with IMX and DVCPro50 (anamorphic) mostly and ProRes seems to "play well" with myby adelena - Café LA Re: Digital Cinema Desktop - Freeze Frames - 16 years agoHaha - what if none of that works? I've got a similar problem. I recently was asked to layoff a clip that was handed to me on a DVD. The clip was 6minutes, DVCPROHD 720p60 at 23.98fps. I copied the clip, imported it into a new 720p project and laid it to timeline (conforming the timeline to the clip.) It plays fine in the viewer and, after rendering, the sequence canvas, but absolutely willby adelena - Café LA Re: Discreet 4 channel Audio with AJAio - SDI to D-Beta - 16 years agoI'm assuming you have audio on 1 & 2 only. Copy your audio tracks to channels 3 & 4. In Sequence>Settings...choose the audio outputs tab and set channels 1 & 2 to Stereo and channels 3 & 4 to Dual Mono with downmix off. When you assemble or insert the clip make sure downmix is off in your Audio Mixer tool. I use a Kona3 so I'm not sure about the AJAio, but it just needs toby adelena - Café LA Re: Anystream w/FCP - 16 years agoCompressor does do lots of what this seems to do, though. Agreed, unfortunately, it does not do wmv and we are not inclined to invest in Flip4Mac or some other extra software. File transfer works just fine on our network between mac & anystream that's why I thought we should be able to take control of the FCP sequence. Thank you for the input.by adelena - Café LA Anystream w/FCP - 16 years agoDoes anyone have experience using Anystream Agility with FCP? I'm trying to use the Agility's VTR control to take control of a FCP sequence. Can't really find a setting in FCP like VTR Emulation in Avid (I can hear the groans!) At any rate, does this exist? Also, even with video and audio patched thru to the Agility workstation I can't see video or hear anything. Andreby adelena - Café LA Re: Different Formats --> One Sequence - 16 years agoI changed my ingest formats to more closely match each other. Not sure what your options are but I was getting footage from three sources. IMX50 (wrapped in a Quicktime) on file transfer, I couldn't change this, so i decided to ingest from tape in IMX50 (my second footage component.) My third component was files I was getting via ftp. Ok, looks like this was my problem. I had the sequence setting's downmix set to -3db. post script: I've been able to lay off three sequences now with Edit to Tape. Seems this was my problem. New sequences default to downmix -3db.by adelena - Café LA Re: Edit to Tape Problems - 16 years agoRich/Jude, I've already done most of what you suggested. My sequence audio output settings are 4chs = dual mono (1&2)(3&4). Last week's sequences were created with incorrect settings. This week's were created just as you outlined above. When I am back at work on Thursday I will see if cutting and pasting into a new sequence works, this I have not tried. Also I didn't realize Iby adelena - Café LA Edit to Tape Problems - 16 years agoI have many short sequences (less then 2minutes each.) I need to archive them to tape with split audio tracks. In our house we put vo on ch1, sots & nats on ch2 and/or ch3 & music on ch4. When I try to Edit to Tape I get either no audio at all, a stereo mix or a "mix minus" (everything on ch1 & everything minus vo on ch2.) I'm sure this is a simple fix, perhaps a settingby adelena - Café LA |
