Re: 16:9 anamorphic output problem - 18 years agoI'd been going through this ordeal for over three weeks solid -- 12-16 hour days with the computer rendering and making QT movies all the time. I had a 44 minute movie shot on HDV (Sony HRV Z1U camera). The footage looked great and I was able to capture it onto my G5 FCP5 system. I was doing this for the first time. I edited the movie very well, but then I couldn't output it at all. Finally, I foby filmman - Café LA How to shrink a 100 minute movie in COMPRESSOR 2 and end up with a 4.0 GB MPEG 2 - 18 years agoI have a 100 minute movie that I tried shrinking down to MPEG 2 in the COMPRESSOR so I can put it on one 4.7 GB DVD. I started with a self-contained QT movie and then used the compressor, but I can't get the movie down to less than 4.3 GB. Even at 4.3 GB it did not go onto a 4.7 GB DVD disc, why is that? It seem to grow to 4.8 GB by the time I saved it to DVD Studio Pro. Please help me find a wayby filmman - Café LA Re: Reformatting - 18 years agoHi Shane, I really appreciate the help you gave me in completing my first project on FCP. If we were in the military I'd give you a medal. I'm not kidding. You saved the day. ... I was thinking of erasing my hard drive and reinstalling everything from scratch because I didn't know what I was doing and I believe I've made a mess of my programs. I only run FCP on my G5. I don't even have an internby filmman - Café LA How does one convert to MPEG 2 from HDV QT? - 18 years agoAfter editing, how do you end up with MPEG 2 ? Do you convert to .264 ? Which of the items on the list do you choose? I have one project shot in HDV and another one shot in DVCAM. Is the procedure different? Thanks for any help.by filmman - Café LA Re: Long form DVDs w/ compression issues, FCP help ? - 18 years agoFor me DV stream is what produces the best quality, but I'm waiting on a movie benig converted from QT right now. It takes 5 hours to do it. Then I have to figure out how to put it on a DVD. The DV stream is the only way I can make an iDVD compatible file. Anyone know if I'm following the right procedure?by filmman - Café LA Re: HDV Convert to 8 Bit - 18 years agoThe only thing that works for me is converting QT to DV stream. That's all that my system recognizes. I have the G5 dual processor 2.7 gig 3 gigs RAM. I can make DVD only from DV stream. It's strange but that's all that works for me. I tried every other way and nothing works. I don't know why. The DV stream looks great but it takes 5 hours to convert a 100 minute movie to DV stream.by filmman - Café LA Re: When does one use the Media Manager? - 18 years agoHi Shane, Where is the Media Drive? I did everything but I don't know where to put the file now that I have created it. Thanks for the advice; everything worked fine. I have a self contained movie and all now. I still can't burn a DVD though or layback to my Sony Z1.by filmman - Café LA Re: Rendering nests - 18 years agoI thought nesting was for embedding titles into shots, etc. Thanks for clarifying it to me. But beyond the best uses for nesting, it seems that nesting also creates other problems, like the time it takes to render. For me it's best not to do any more nesting of titles. Thanks again.by filmman - Café LA Re: Rendering nests - 18 years agoIs nesting the same as marrying a title with the shot? Like iMovie does it, the title is on the clip. Why can't we do that in FCP 5? Or perhaps I should ask, how does one do it in FCP? Thanks!by filmman - Café LA When does one use the Media Manager? - 18 years agoI have trouble printing to video. I can't seem to get my movies out of FCP. I'm beginning to wonder if the huge clips that are retained by the non-destructive FCP filing system is preventing me from exporting. In addition to that my projects contain composits of titles and effects stacked on top of the picture track. Does the Media Manager deal with all this excess info in the project or does oneby filmman - Café LA Re: FCP dissappears from the screen every time I hit capture! - 18 years agoI capture using NOW. It's the only one that works well for me. When I log and then do a batch capture, FCP can't find the timecode. But the NOW capture works. I capture one clip at a time and then everything looks great. This works for HDV and DVCAM also. I was able to solve my problems by following a Larry Jordan article about optimizing my computer. It's the PHDVM-63DM It says in the Z1 manual that you can use MiniDV tapes for SDV, DVCAM tape for DVCAM, and HDV tape for HDV. I haven't used regular MiniDV tapes in the camera yet. I think I'll stick with the Digital Master tape from now on, because I had great results with. I'm thinking of buying another one. They're at sale at Fry's for $150 this weekend -- after rebate. I've had no problems with the hard drive, but I'm wondering if the 7200 RPM is good enough. Should I be looking for a faster hard drive? Also, could someone talk about some other storage options? Thanks!by filmman - Café LA Re: recapture problems - 18 years agoI was having horrendous problems like that a couple of days ago. I went to the Apple Store and the teacher there told me to read this article from Larry Jordan. It's all about optimizing your system and my problems dissappeared completely.by filmman - Café LA Re: HDV video observation - 18 years agoI shot a lot of moving shots from a car with the Z1 and I didn't have any such results. In fact the playback is just great. I'm using Sony Digital Mastering tape. I don't know if that has something to do with it.by filmman - Café LA Re: field dominace in DHV and DV - 18 years agoI thought I read that you can't edit SDV and HDV together. You have to change both to the same configuration, preferably to SDV.by filmman - Café LA Re: HDV HELL - 18 years agoI was running capture now and capture clip. Whatever I did, even capturing one shot would make the FCP dissappear. It's still doing it. I downloaded a Larry Jordan article about optimizing FCP. I'm going to follow it and see what happens tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions, such as trashing the Preferences.by filmman - Café LA Re: HDV HELL - 18 years agoI had 3 and a half hours of HDV 1080i. I ended up with a 45 minute educational movie with a few titles and some dissolves. I was able to make an iDVD copy of it, but I wasn't able to lay it back to my camera. Now that I'm editing DVCAM I started having all these problems with the FCP quitting on me. I don't know if I should re-install it or re-install the OS.by filmman - Café LA Re: HDV HELL - 18 years agoI suddenly started having the FCP dissappear from the screen on me. It happened ten times when I did a capture. Poof it dissappears. I have a G5 dual processor 2.7 Hz FCP 5.01 OS 10.4 This happened when I started editing DVCAM. When I was editing HDV nothing happened. I had no problems. However, I still haven't been able to go out to my camera with the finished movie. I don't know why. I was searching through the manuals like crazy and ... nothing. I just did it and both the exclamation mark and the check mark disappeared from the canvas. Thanks again.by filmman - Café LA Can't get rid of exclamation mark ! in yellow triangle ! - 18 years agoI don't know what I did. There's an exclamation mark in my canvas window that won't go away. Also a little ways in my time line, a check mark in a green circle appears. IT won't go away either, except when I play the movie. But then they come back again in the canvas window. They drive me nuts. Then there is a pulsating red fiels of diagonal lines that appears sometimes too. I hope I can repeat the process, because I tried so many things with no luck for days. I made a quick time movie from the finished movie with dissolves and titles. The movie was 45 minutes long. It was shot on HDV 1080i. I converted it to quick time movie and chose all the setting that would produce the best results: appleby filmman - Café LA Re: HDV to DVD, making progress - 18 years agoWell, I was finally able to get a DVD out! I converted the HDV movie I'd shot on the Z1 in HD 1080i and edited in FCP 5. Then I made a Quick Time movie out of it and then I opened it in iDVD and clicked on BURN and it did it. I still can't go back to camera though. Oh, yes, the DVD came out Ok and I guess it's standard digital video now. It must be MPEG 2. Am I right?by filmman - Café LA Re: How do you output from FCP? - 18 years agoShould I use media manager to remove the excess part of the scenes? My movie is 45 minutes long. And when making quick time movie, what settings shall I use? There are so many choices.by filmman - Café LA Re: HDV to DVD, making progress - 18 years agoHi Wayne, Been doing that for over a month now. I shot the Z1 and captured the movie into FCP. The editing went fine. Then I did a great looking layback to camera and made a DVD on an external DVD recorder. This was a rough cut. Then I polished the movie and now I can't get out to my camera again. :-) I forgot what I did. So now I'm stuck. And I can't make the iDVD or the DVD STudio Pro work atby filmman - Café LA How do you output from FCP? - 18 years agoI did a great job of editing. I just learned FCP 5. I've been doing this for the past month -- first with FCP 4.5 and now as of two weeks ago, I'm using FCP 5 upgrade. But now I can't get the 45 minute movie out of FCP. If someone can suggest how to get a HD 1080i movie out to camera, I'd appreciate it. As for making DVDs, I can't do anything. I tried reading the manuals for iDVD and DVD Studio Pby filmman - Café LA Re: Sony HVR-Z1U - 18 years agoHi Eric, It's a great camera -- just bought one. You can shoot DVCAM until HD becomes better supported when editing. I edited an educational movie which I shot with this camera. I used HD 1080i and now I'm having problems getting the finished movie out of FCP. Otherwise everything looks great. The HD is definitely going to be a thing of the future.by filmman - Café LA |
