For a while I've been pretty successful working on two machines by keeping the media drives regularly synced. The drive names, folders, files, etc. are all exactly the same. So if an FCP project is brought from one machine to another, they don't require any relinking. Now we have a project where the media is onby JustinB - Café LA Re: I love when QMaster works - 12 years agoIt does rock to see Compressor speeding through a transcode, lighting up all the bars in Activity Monitor. FCP systems can be flaky with clean insert edits.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Assisant Editor: Everything-you-need-to-know-books for FCP - 12 years agoFor assistant editing in general, I highly recommend two books: 1) Make the Cut: A Guide to Becoming a Successful Assistant Editor in Film and TV 2) The Film Editing Room Handbook: How to Tame the Chaos of the Editing Room (4th Edition) Neither will teach you how to use FCP. But they cover what an assistant is expected to know. There are many good books that cover how to use FCP. The external TC allows you to merge by TC which will help. But even then there will be a bit of drift you'll want to correct via slates. Another workflow is to have the mixer also send a mix to the camera. But at some point this will require an audio conform. REDCINE-X now has an auto-sync to broadcast wave fileby JustinB - Café LA Re: Shark Stock Footage - 12 years agoThanks so much for all the leads. Tremendously helpful!by JustinB - Café LA Re: RED using Cinema Tools - 12 years agoOpps that was dumb of me. Doing too many things at once again. I meant to tell you to convert the FCP XML using Clipfinder. That's the way to relink to the R3Ds from the offlines before Color. I don't have time to test it tonight, but I've done it in the past with earlier versions of CF. It's a relatively common RED workflow for smaller projects. You might find the RedUser workflow forum helpfby JustinB - Café LA Re: Shark Stock Footage - 12 years agoThanks Jeff. That might end up being the way to go actually. It's a small scene. But that's down the road. I have some stock to start cutting with. I'll let the editors and director play with it and see how they feel. I'll definitely hit you up for those animation guys should that be the route we end up taking.by JustinB - Café LA Re: Shark Stock Footage - 12 years agoUpdate: actually will match with 5D footage in this scene. The rest of the film is S16, so that's the baseline.by JustinB - Café LA Shark Stock Footage - 12 years agoAnyone have any leads on a good stock footage place for sharks? I need some shots of sharks, preferably aggressive. Ultimately will match with super 16 for a low budget feature.by JustinB - Café LA Re: RED using Cinema Tools - 12 years agoOh OK I see. I haven't tried that way myself. I'd check the EDL to see if the reel info is exactly matching the reel info from the CT database. What I have done is 1) transcode to ProRes in RR, RCX, or CF, 2) edit in FCP 3) convert the XML in FCP (links to actual R3Ds,) 4) and then grade in Color.by JustinB - Café LA Re: RED using Cinema Tools - 12 years agoWhat are you exporting from CT to reconnect to Color? I'd use Clipfinder instead, unless there is a reason you want CT in the workflow (change lists or audio EDLs.)by JustinB - Café LA Re: FCP and Avid question. - 12 years agoJude Cotter Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > <<Why? That's bad news about FCP not reading clip names, but at least I know now. I'll see what I can do with the Spherico app.by JustinB - Café LA Filter to burn-in text based on clip name? - 12 years agoI'm looking for a FCP filter that will allow me to add text to a clip based on the name of the clip. The idea is to have the scene/take numbers burnt into the clips for later reference. Like how they might arrive from a lab. So for example the clip named 37A-2 would have the text "37A-2" superimposed on in somewhere. I seem to remember there being a free plugin out there that does thby JustinB - Café LA Re: FCP media management question - 12 years agoNick Meyers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > i've been using coloured markers to denote VFX in > my latest show. > i'm using "extended" markers, where they "stretch > out" and indicate a section of the timeline, > and at times there are quite a few overlapping. > > i found it was really slowing down my frame by &by JustinB - Café LA Re: OT: A Good Editor?? - 12 years agoI'm just finishing Sam O'Steen's book, "Cut to the Chase." You can still be excited. I'm still excited about how it handles RED RAW. Shane, That's going to be a bummer if/when the Alexa gets popular. Extra metadata could come through ALE, but no audio OMF or AAF is, like you said, a deal breaker.
