Re: can o' worms: final cut vs avid express! - 17 years agoThanks Y'all- He ain't an editor. He's a producer. It'd be me or my colleagues using it, and I'm comfy on both platforms (though I have never used DV Express, just symphony and media composer...) On Avid DV Express can you mix formats on a single timeline w/o rendering??? My guess is though that each project would be on a single format mostly, but that there'd be different ones... Thaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Gtech drives 250 vs 500??? - 17 years ago>and yes, Quads are still out there and they dont come with Intel. The new towers are called MacPros. Those are the ones with Intel processors. They come in different flavors. So are the MacPros not duals/quads because the intel processors are so much faster? And am I right to be afraid of the intel shifteroo? How do you lovely colleagues feel about the intel revolution as it pertainsby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Gtech drives 250 vs 500??? - 17 years agoHmmm. I do not have an Intel mac, and don't think I want one (scary!!!), but when I upgrade my machine I bet that's all that'll be available (true? false?)... How long is the wait, and do you think it's a good idea? Are the SATA card ones fine with the non-intel macs too? Can you still even buy a quad w/o that intel processor? Thanks, Marlby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA can o' worms: final cut vs avid express! - 17 years agoHey there, Disclaimer: this research is on behalf of a client, not for my system: I just cut a show for a client who has his own gear and it's always been avid (old media composer, very old). He needs to upgrade, and everything he does is for broadcast. He has a beta deck, and an old, huge, non fire-wire, pro DVCam deck. He's considering a prosumer HD/Dv camera, but isn't certain yet.by Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Gtech drives 250 vs 500??? - 17 years agoOK pals, I am finally springing for 500 gigs worth of good drivespace. Anybody ever use the 250's? I was thinking it's safer (and cheaper actually) to get 2 250s instead of one 500, in case htere's ever drive failure... What do you think? Thanks, Marla, still in New York mitchnickpictures@ya&by Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: Migrate Back from DVD Studio Pro 4 to 3??? - 17 years agoReport: So miraculously I was able to get my compressed (fast encode, alas) file done with an hour to spare! The remaining time indicator was WAY off. So I was very bleary, but I managed to author a aDVD in DVD SP 4, though 2 odd things happened. 1 of my chapters was missing, no biggie, it was in some black so I was able to make a sufficiently exact chapter marker inside of DVD SP. Buby Marla Mitchnick - DVD Studio Pro QT to Compressor encode vs FCp to compressor - 17 years agoHi there- I just started an FCP export to compressor about 15 minutes ago.It says it has 3 hours and 43 mins remaining. It's a 40 minute video and I am in a bit of a rush, though I want a solid comressed file. I had already exported a self-contained QT movie, with DVD Studio Pro Chapter Markers selected... If I interrupt the Compressor export now, and drag the QT file into compressor, will theby Marla Mitchnick - DVD Studio Pro Re: Encoding length of time?/QT Chapter Markers in Compressor - 17 years agoThis post has been helpful to my recent query. I did not know about using a QT self contained into compressor. The file that I exported had the selection "DVD Studio Pro Chapter Markers." If I used this one, would compressor recognize those? Marla in NY mitchnickpictures@yahoo&by Marla Mitchnick - DVD Studio Pro Compressor or Quicktime self-contained??? - 17 years agoHi there all- I also posted this on cafe LA: My timeline is 40 mins, and would take 10-12 hours to compress in best quality mode. Sadly, I do not have the time. I output a QT self-contained, with DVD Studio Pro Chapter Markers, and that file looks good. I just started a Compressor export using the fast encode, and if I let it go it'll take about 3 hours. At this point I am supposed to vacateby Marla Mitchnick - DVD Studio Pro Re: urgent: any friendly Avid forums to recommend? - 17 years agoOops-found a pdf tp download and got an address, still seems weird though, Marlby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: urgent: any friendly Avid forums to recommend? Q for Joey! - 17 years agoHi Joey- I just tried to register but something's up with that function of the Avid forums site. My window just freezes each time I hit the create user button. Tried opening new windows and re-trying, but no go. When I clicked the contact us button, I just got sales, not the forum. Any way that you know of to contact them without being registered yet, to let them know I am experiencing difficultby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: rendering "full" necessary before export? - 17 years agoHmm. I don't think so, never caused me a problem but: I don't actually know. On the full/render issue: what the heck IS "FULL?" I did render it, but I don't understand what it means, Thanks, Marlby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: just upgraded help w incompatible compression settings! - 17 years agoSo wierd: it worked with one output but not the others: still getting compression-related error messages with 2 other timelines. But I am on another project for 2 weeks, so I'll resume the efforts to master to tape in early September... Thanks again, Marlby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: urgent: any friendly Avid forums to recommend? - 17 years agoThanks Mark. Kevin, and Joey! I had an old book by Steve Bayes that just so happens to correspond with the old version of Avid I'm cutting on (7.2 on the Mac)... My friends at Goldcrerst let me in for a couple of hours the night before the job started (no prep time, naturally it was a "can you start tomorrow" deal) and I boned up on the very basics. I just need to stay ahead of the cby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: urgent: any friendly Avid forums to recommend? - 17 years agoThank you both - Joey - so much on my plate right now with juggling the jobs that I actually forgot that the forum you'd recommended was for Avid, sorry to be an idiot, hopefully a temporary condition, Best, Marlby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA rendering "full" necessary before export? - 17 years agoHi Y'all- Trying to get a bunch of old projects to tape before I leave, is it necessary to render the olivey green stuff, called "full" before exporting as a QT self-contained? I assume so, but I don't know what the full render lines actually mean... any clarification appreciated. I'm in 5.1, though this cut was created in 4.5... Thanks, Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA urgent: any friendly Avid forums to recommend? - 17 years agoHi Y'all- I just got my first Avid job in ages - starts tomorrow! I cringe to think how long it's been since I touched an Avid, if anyone knows any free forums that are decent I'd appreciate a recommendation, Creative Cow perhaps? Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: just upgraded help w incompatible compression settings! - 17 years agoIt worked, thanks for all of your help, Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: just upgraded help w incompatible compression settings! - 17 years agoI did the render all and the audio mixdown before export, and I also did export to the internal hard drive. The new project is a great idea which hadn't occurred to me, I am going to try it right now! Thanks, Marlaby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: just upgraded help w incompatible compression settings! - 17 years agoHi Jude, I get the warning window when I pres the assemble button for edit to tape or print to tape. Insert mode has been "greyed out," only the assemble button has been active. I tested it with a new blank tape, and with a time-coded one-pass tape. I had partial success when I tried to play and record a mixed down sequence, but there were intermittent audio drop-outs and also afterby Marla Mitchnick - Café LA Re: can't get signal thru the firewire... upgraded yesterday.... - 17 years agoThanks Mike- I got signal after trashing my prefs! Can't say the same, though I do reside in a big pond, and I have worked on some great stuff... Here's another OT question for you: I used to know Avid fairly well, but since FCP became my main thing a few years ago (along with the obscure Media 100 844X system) I haven't touched an Avid.
