Re: POLL v2: Does HDV actually suck or not? - 16 years agoHi Jude, good idea for a poll. I've been using HDV since it hit the market with results in line with what everyone is saying. The format has its plus points, but the downside involves a lot of workarounds and inherent disappointments. Maybe this sheds some light on the discussion (quoted from Sony's initial press release in 2004): >>Sony Corporation today introduced the world's fby ClayC - Café LA Re: Get ready for S3200 FireWire! - 16 years agoWay cool, but too bad they didn't do something to improve the connections. What the world needs now is an industrial strength XLR Audio type FW connector for cameras, laptops, firestores and other mobile devices. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: What is the normal Pay Scale for editors - 16 years agoDollars? Pounds Sterling? Koalas? Much nicer to get paid in Euros these days :-) Fees on the continent are about 200 a day for tens at the low end (working TV) to around 850 with your own rig. More if it's HD. Weeklies negotiable. Figure Euros x 1,5 at the moment for monopoly money, your guess as to what it's worth in another year or so. Since 2002 it has devalued by half against theby ClayC - Café LA Re: Broadcast Audio levels for television. - 16 years agoTVC's are subjectively much louder because the mix is highly compressed. An easy way to evaluate that is to look at the waveforms. You'll see that their tracks (as are radio broadcasts) are full up to the max at every frequency level thus making them seem louder although still within broadcasters legal limits. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: Banding of Motion graphics and Quick Time movies - 16 years agoYou need to post some specifics: what project properties did you use in Motion, i.e. what setup did you use? What format did you export from Motion? What format is your FCP sequence? For best results, all those things have to jive well. Also, what are you monitoring on? Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: P2 Import | Ingest - 16 years agoImport P2 was/is the way to do it in FCP5. FCP6 uses Log and Transfer only. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: DVCPRO HD Codec Missing? - 16 years agoPhil, yes, there should be a bunch of other stuff in there too including motion and livetype components plus various others depending on grafix card etc. You can't just download them, they're proprietary with FCP and not freely available. Sounds like you'd first need to try a re-install, although without discs....? Never leave home without 'em. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: DVCPRO HD Codec Missing? - 16 years agoThe way to check is go to Library>QuickTime and see if the DVCProHD components are in the folder. There's 6 of them. Not sure about the G4's video card tho. Someone else? Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: Distort Tool - 16 years agoAfraid of that. So, in addition to 3D shadows I guess it's a feature request. Being able to bend and distort shapes and type is a must-have. Btw, working through the Motion 3 book. Very useful, very straightforward, and fills in many of the gaps. Highly recommended. Clayby ClayC - Motion Re: Spinning plug-ins - 16 years agoDon't know of a plugin, but why not just use keyframes in the motion tab for scale, position and rotation. Or do it in Motion for more 3D-like control. You can also save a preset thus bascially creating your own custom plug. Add some motion blur and you'll have the effect exactly as you describe. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: Apple HD monitor - 16 years agoNot familiar with your card, but checking the specs, the 30 needs either a GeForce 6800 or better, or an ATI 9650 or better. You're right about that boat. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: editing and working on dvcpro hd 720p50 footage - 16 years agoIf you import it into FCP6, FCP gives you a 720p50 timeline compressor setting. Works fine here, and we've been using it a lot lately with HVX200 footage with very respectable results. Especially so if you're going to DVD as it scales down very well and without a lot of gamma shift. Depends what you're delivering of course, but if it's this kind of workflow, it's well worth the upgrade to 6.by ClayC - Café LA Re: Apple HD monitor - 16 years ago>>Is it possible that my tower does not support it?<< What tower? PC? G4? G5? MacPro? and what graphics card and which HD Monitor (23 or 30 inch?)by ClayC - Café LA Distort Tool - 16 years agoHow do I distort an object or group in Motion 3 as with AE's Bezier Warp tool? I need to make some curved backgrounds and flowing sweeps that I can accurately tweak/keyframe. Or is there a third party plug somewhere? Clayby ClayC - Motion Re: what setting in FCP 6 for editing with Footage from the HVX200 1280X720? - 16 years agoUse the native codec DVCProHD 720p50 or 25, depending which you shot. Are you importing P2 or from a Firestore? Edit in the codec and Master to whatever you need i.e. drop the final version into an umcompressed HD timeline and play out to file or tape from there. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: Firestore Help - 16 years agoThe LASTCLIP.TXT file is present in the top level of the backup folder i.e. not in the CONTENTS folder. It reads: 0389FS 1.0 390 That shed any light? Otherwise, I've written to Firestore support, waiting (hopefully) for the fix. For the moment they're saying that it might be a camera setup error. But, I still don't get why I can preview both video and audio for the clips perfectlyby ClayC - Café LA Re: Firestore Help - 16 years agoGood thought, thanks for that. I don't currently have a working P2 set. Once the clips have been through Log and Transfer, I back up the clips and trash the P2 Content folder. My buggy Content folder contains: An Audio folder with .mxf files. A Clip folder with .xml files. An Icon folder with .bmp files. A Proxy folder which is empty. A Video folder with .mxf files. A Voice folder whby ClayC - Café LA Re: Firestore Help - 16 years ago>>Try copying all P2 contents to an external drive, then import. Bypassing the FS for import.<< Tried that too. Identical behavior. Error-NoData. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Firestore Help - 16 years agoWhat's this glitch? >> I connected a FS-100 Firestore drive with 720p25 material, ran the P2 organize utility, enabled the disk, which then shows up on the desktop. I opened a 720p25 Project File, setup a log bin and hit Log and Transfer. The firestore clips appear as they should. I can open them in the Log and Transfer preview window as usual. I then select the clips I want to import aby ClayC - Café LA Re: VisualHub - 16 years agoThanks for all the feedback. Going to do some more testing next week. $23. Amazing. Clayby ClayC - Café LA VisualHub - 16 years agoAn agency client bashed me over the head today for telling them they needed Flip4Mac and Episode to do things like .wmv and mpeg2 streaming conversions from our 10Bit Uncompressed SD and HD Masters. Their IT guy sent me a mail re VisualHub. "Fast conversion from nearly every video format" for $23. Have you been to the support section on the Blackmagic website? Drop them a query, they're very good at helping you get the codecs up and running. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: Blackmagic Intensity Pro Question - 16 years agoThe intensity card was made with capturing HDMI from the new generation CMOS HDV cameras in mind, circumventing HDV compression by getting the signal directly off the processor. From what I've seen, it does a very good job at that. With a DVD player with an HDMI output you could theoretically play out from the player into the (Intel) Mac via the card's HDMI input. That would only happen in rby ClayC - Café LA Re: 4k and 2k.. what it stands for? - 16 years agoThank the good people at Quantel for providing all that knowledge in one place for everyone for free. Those two guides are pretty much the bible. Re 2k cameras, check this one out: www.red.com That's where the revolution is starting. If and when they start making them in real quantities and getting them into the rental houses, then we'd all have a chance at actually ever using one.by ClayC - Café LA Re: 4k and 2k.. what it stands for? - 16 years agoKoz, thanks for that. Ok, let's try and that do the trick?by ClayC - Café LA Re: 4k and 2k.. what it stands for? - 16 years agoYou'll find everything you need to know quite precisely here: www.quantel.com/resource.nsf/Files/Quantel_Digital_Factbook/$FILE/Quantel_Digital_Factbook.pdf and here: www.quantel.com//resource.nsf/Files/Digital_Film/$FILE/Digital_Film.pdf Sorry, don't know how to link directly here, but just copy and paste the url's and download the pdf files. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: Broadcast monitor: good or bad buy? - 16 years agoI've been using a 24" JVC LCD for the last 3 months or so. No, its not a perfect as a CRT. But, as far as LCD's go, its a very good unit with a lot of useful features and just about any connection you could ask for. Right now its hooked up to a Blackmagic HD Extreme via HD/SDI. Uncompressed SD and HD Media are coming off a Sonnet 3,5TB Raid. HD media looks very good indeed, you can evby ClayC - Café LA Re: Euro Travel Considerations - 16 years agoWhat countries are you going to and what gear are you thinking of travelling with? It might be easier to just get on a plane with your laptop and rent everything else locally. Prices for rentals are pretty similar throughout Europe with the added advantage of having everything at the right voltage and avoiding other potential incompatibilities and also not having to mess around with customs.by ClayC - Café LA Re: pal to ntsc - 16 years agoOr just take it to a post house that can do it on the big dog professional gear. I pay about $3.00 a minute here, $75 minimum, plus sundries. At least you've got someone to shoot if things go awry, and can have it done again until it's perfect. Clayby ClayC - Café LA Re: RAID Maintnenance? - 16 years agoAs far as maintenance goes, what they said. Otherwise: Unloading P2 media sounds like you're mostly working in DVCProHD? At full res, you're talking something around 52GB an hour for media storage. Not too bad to handle, and you can use FW800. The cheapo solution is to backup your media to a FW800 drive (like a 1TB G-Tech) and use your raid for editing the current project only (obviousby ClayC - Café LA |
