I know the terranex beats out the software stuff, but how does it compare to the hdcam deck upconvert? Any idea? Thanks! gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA OT: The upres shoot-out - 15 years agoHey all So the merits and shortcomings of Instant HD, compressor, etc have been debated ad-nauseum in the forum. What I am wondering is comparing hardware based upres techniques... My feature length doc was just accepted to premiere at SXSW this year, and I've got to deliver an HDCAM tape. The film was shot letterboxed DV. I've talked to a couple of post houses and there seem to be three poby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: How to learn to color correct? - 15 years agoThanks everyone, it's already in the mail!by Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: How to learn to color correct? - 15 years agocool, perfect, thanks shane gby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA How to learn to color correct? - 15 years agoHey everyone! So I have done a good bit of work color correcting things, but am by no means an expert. I learned the most the day I sat in on a coloring session with a true colorist and asked a lot of question. On my current project, however, I am going to do all the grading. It will be distributed via dvd. I plan on grading it FCP and not Color. Does anyone have any recommendations for gooby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: Using Ethernet Hard drive connections?? - 15 years agoJust for the record... I am using an XRaid accessed via a dedicated gigabit ethernet line and controlled with a Xsan; and it works nearly flawlessly. Almost all our work is DVCPROHD, and I get some stuttering on long playbacks, but nothing that affects my workflow in any significant way. So it is possible. gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: You want me to sign what?!?!!??! - 15 years agoThanks for all the feedback guys, this is helpful. I have a meeting with my Producers and other relevant parties on Monday, so I will be sure to check back in, but it seems like a god opportunity to continue the conversation about responsibilities, liabilities, and contracts in the field... gby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: You want me to sign what?!?!!??! - 15 years agoTom Do you have E&O insurance? Do any of you independants out there have it?by Gregory O'Toole - Café LA You want me to sign what?!?!!??! - 15 years agoHey Everyone... I am an independent contractor editor in the US. I work for lots of different clients and bounce around between them. This week however, one of my largest and most consistent clients asked me to sign a contract as an independent contractor. I have worked for them on and off for almost two years without having signed anything. They have an in-house Producer and Executive Proby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: Exporting Audio for Transcription with TC? - 15 years agoKoz Thanks for the brainstorming! It has come up before, but I don't usually have the time to try and figure out a good solution. The SMPTE thing probably won't work bc I assume at least some of the transcriptionists I use do not have that machine... In terms of accuracy....down to the frame is waaaaay accurate enough. I just want a timecoded transcript that Producers can use for a pby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: Exporting Audio for Transcription with TC? - 15 years agoyeah the whole point is to deliver small files over ftp...so DAT is out. thanks for the idea though! gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: 3.98 gb MXF's giving me problems! - 15 years agoBut it's weird....I mean why are the problematic clips all derived from MXF's that are the same size, and happen to be 3.98gbs? Thanks everyone for the tips, if I get tot he bottom of it I'll let you all know.. gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Exporting Audio for Transcription with TC? - 15 years agoHello everyone! Is there a way to deliver audio files with the correct TC for transcription? Or is the only way to get accurate TC a window burn? I'd love to deliver mp3's that had the correct TC, or the TC in one of the audio tracks.... Thanks! gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: 3.98 gb MXF's giving me problems! - 15 years agoHey guys, thanks for responding.... Here is some additional info, plus the way that I dealt with it... Additional info: 1) I am capturing to a networked RAID, and I too suspected something about the drives, given that the files were all the same size. However, it is the MXF's, not the QT's, that are all identical sizes (3.98), so if there was a file format issue it had to have been withby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA 3.98 gb MXF's giving me problems! - 15 years agoHey All! FCP 6.0.1 AND 6.0.3 HVX200A 16 and 32 gb P2 cards I have been trying to convert MXF's to QT's and they keep giving me errors or creating QT's that will not open. The weird thing is, all the problematic clips are 3.98 gbs. Anyone run into this one before? Thanks! gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA When does Compressor/FCP actually compress? - 16 years agoHey all... So here is a question that has been bugging me.... When does Compressor or FCP actually compress? For example.....I want to change the framerate of some DVCPROHD footage. So I bring it into comrpessor, choose the same framesize and codec settings, but change the framerate, and "compress". Will I have just compressed my footage for a second time in DVCPROHD (the fiby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: Reconnecting conflict! - 16 years agoLoren Thanks for the response. That is essentially what I did, except that I deleted the HD stuff from the drives (it is backed up elsewhere) The problem is not finding the material, it is the fact that the fps has changed and FC won't accept that it is the same file - it keeps saying there is a conflict and not reconnecting any of the other files in that directory. gby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Reconnecting conflict! - 16 years agoHey all! So I have been working with DVCPROHD footage, which we recently down-converted for an SD delivery. I kept all the file names the exact same, and replaced the original HD footage with the new converted SD footage, in the exact same filepaths. About half of the footage reconnects perfectly. The other half gives me a "conflict" error which means that I need to reconnect eachby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: PSD drives my clip crazy!! - 16 years agoAndy thanks for getting back to me. I'm not sure what the pixel dimensions are but I made the photos smaller (all like 15mb) and it made the problem disappear. Thanks! gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Re: PSD drives my clip crazy!! - 16 years agoThanks Andy for responding. Yeah, that;s what i figured. but given that the original photo was over 2GBs i was hoping it would be ok! thanks! gregby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA PSD drives my clip crazy!! - 16 years agoHey all! machine is a 8-core intel machine with 10gb RAM, running FCP6.02 and 10.4.11 So i a working in a dvcprohd 23.98 timeline, with an ntsc 29.97 clip. everything is fine until i drop in three still psd files - 23 mb, 23mb, and 321 mb. then, no matter what i do, all the 29.97 material is out of sync with its audio. i suspect i need to create smaller sized psd's, but can anyoneby Gregory O'Toole - Café LA Multi-tasking on the computer? - 16 years agoHey all So my producer asked me a question that i couldn't answer today... Let's say you want to make a backup of all your source footage. So you start copying it all off to another external drive, and it says it will take 2 hours to do that. But you wanna keep editing... Is it a bad idea to be copying the footage and editing with the footage at the same time? So i have used filemaker pro to log and capture and update the metadata fields of my clips within FC. Now however, I was wondering if there is a way to export a "EDL" from filemaker so that my writer could do a paper edit that i could import into final cut, creating a new sequence.
